Chapter 40: How to Carry the Apocalypse on Your Back

Chapter 40: Chapter 40: How to Carry the Apocalypse on Your Back

"Help us load it in the truck," Commander Xu ordered and left without even acknowledging their expressions or caring for their response. He was completely assured that no one dared to defy his order. And he was right. Chen Wei and Liang Zihan immediately started walking to help him out.

What surprised Liora was that even Zhou Yinuo, who looked like a frail doll, also started following them.

Liora immediately stepped forward and caught her wrist, indicating for her not to move. But Zhou Yinuo did not understand her intention and asked aloud, "What happened, Liora?"

"Are you going to lift those heavy boxes?" Liora asked with a raised brow.

Zhou Yinuo nodded at her, and Liora took a deep breath to calm herself.

"Do you think you could even move those boxes?"

Zhou Yinuo’s face flushed with embarrassment, and she started stuttering, "I can... don’t worry. I am not that weak," she murmured.

"I think you have forgotten that you blacked out a few moments ago because of a head injury," Liora reminded her in a slightly sharp tone. "But if you want, you can," Liora said and dropped her wrist in annoyance.

She could not believe why they were like this, always eager to help everyone and so naive. It was almost like they had been brainwashed by the base people to serve them however they wanted in the name of protection.

What were those sturdy men doing that they had to ask a girl to pick up heavy boxes for them?

Liora looked at the back of Zhou Yinuo. Even after being reminded by her, she was still going to pick up those heavy boxes—the same boxes that even Liang Zihan was struggling to carry. Chen Wei was able to lift them easily because he was an Awakener.

As Liora followed them inside, she realized that those shitty men were nowhere to be seen. "Where have they gone to?" she wondered but did not get much time to ponder on it as she looked at Zhou Yinuo’s struggling figure trying to lift the boxes. Chen Wei and Liang Zihan had already left with a box, so they were not there to see Zhou Yinuo’s embarrassing movements as Zhou Yinuo thought it is.

But Liora thought otherwise. If they were here, they would have definitely helped her instead of laughing.

"Let it be. I already told you that you were injured. Don’t force yourself," Liora said and picked up a box herself. Surprisingly, she did not feel any discomfort as her physique was better than that of normal humans because of the system. And after drinking that potion, all her stats were nearly full, making her body light and energized.

"No... no, don’t do it. You don’t have to. Chen Wei and Liang Zihan can do it," Zhou Yinuo shouted while running behind the already walking Liora.

But Liora did not mind her words, neither did she slow down her steps. As she came outside the supermarket with a heavy box,

The scene in front of her made Liora’s blood boil with anger.

Both the men, the mighty Commander Xu and his Captain Han, were leisurely sitting beside the truck, enjoying energy bars and instant noodles while laughing and even ordering the boys to move the boxes according to their wishes, which only made them work harder.

And not only that, they were even opening all the boxes to check them and taking out many items from them, keeping them inside their large backpacks—large enough that it could even accommodate her.

In short, they were making a mess of all the items and ruining their hard work, which they had done to seal all the boxes to make them easier to carry for transportation. And now they had to do it again. The boys were already sweaty while catering to these scoundrels.

While both of those shameless assholes were grinning ear to ear, stuffing their oversized backpacks like squirrels hoarding nuts for winter, Liora stood frozen with her left eye twitching.

She looked at the heavy box in her hands, then back at their smug faces. A dangerous idea took root in her mind. What if... just what if... she "accidentally" dropped this box right on their heads? Would they still be able to do their annoying "he...he...he" laugh? Or would it turn into a "hu...hu...hu" cry for help?

She could already picture it—Commander Xu and Captain Han lying flat on the ground, their greedy faces squished under the weight of justice. Maybe, just maybe, if she hit them hard enough, their brains would reset, and they’d stop acting like a pair of freeloading goblins.

Liora sighed dramatically. "Tch. What a waste of a perfectly good box," she muttered, stomping forward with every ounce of self-restraint she had left.

After what felt like an eternity of backbreaking work, Liora and the others finally finished loading the last of the supplies into the truck. Sweat dripped down their faces, their muscles burned, and their backs ached from lifting the heavy boxes. The air was thick with exhaustion, yet the only ones looking truly relaxed were the two men sitting comfortably by the truck—Commander Xu and Captain Han.

Liora clenched her fists so tightly that her nails dug into her palm. They were still there, lounging as if they had spent the whole day in a luxury resort. Commander Xu had one leg lazily propped up on a box while tearing open another energy bar, and Captain Han was greedily stuffing instant noodles into his mouth like he hadn’t eaten in years.

And their bags—those damn oversized backpacks—were stuffed to the brim with supplies they had shamelessly taken from the boxes they forced others to carry.

Liora inhaled sharply. Just breathe. She had spent the entire time keeping herself in check, but her patience was running thin. She could feel the anger boiling beneath her skin, itching for an outlet. It would be so easy to "accidentally" drop a heavy box on their heads. Maybe then they’d learn what real hard work felt like.

But just as she was about to snap, a soft hand grabbed her wrist.
