Chapter 184: The Secret Behind the Quake
Chapter 184: Chapter 184: The Secret Behind the Quake
As the crowd slowly dispersed, everyone returned to their work. Some felt relieved while others still had unease in their hearts. The base soon filled again with the usual sounds of construction, cooking, and conversations.
Liora stood silently in the same place for a moment. She took a long breath and slowly let it out. A smile appeared on her face. It was not her usual gentle smile. This time her smile was filled with mischief and pride. Her eyes sparkled slightly.
She felt proud of herself.
"I handled that pretty well," she softly whispered to herself.
The situation had been risky. She knew that sooner or later someone would ask why the earthquake had only shaken the base and not the area outside. The people who had gone into the forest would notice it once they returned.
If she had not prepared a solid reason, things might have become dangerous. In this world, even a small misunderstanding could break the trust she had worked so hard to build.
Before stepping out of her room earlier, she had thought of many excuses. She considered every possible reason. In the end, she picked the one that seemed safest and easiest to believe. A fight between mutant moles. The story was simple. It was logical. It was terrifying enough to explain the strong quake without revealing her secret.
And it was not a complete lie.
But some were made up by her. She had decided to use her teleportation ball to teleport to the area with the giant mole and capture it. So she could show the proof to everyone and blame it for the earthquake.
She used the teleportation ball and thought about the situation and imagined a giant mole. The ball glowed when she inserted a high-grade crystal. In a blink, it transported her into a large underground cave, far beneath the ground.
Right before her eyes, she saw it happen.
Two huge mutant moles were fighting. Both were at least level fifteen. Their giant bodies crashed against each other. The ground shook every time they moved. Their sharp claws tore through solid rock with ease. Stones, dirt, and dust flew everywhere as they fought with wild force.
Liora stood quietly at a safe distance. She watched them with a small bucket of popcorn in her hand. She brought it as enjoyment, but now it felt like she was watching a live monster battle.
The fight went on for a long time. Finally, one of the moles collapsed and the other died. The collapsed one was badly injured but had won. That was when Liora made her move.
The mole was weak after the battle. She attacked with full strength. Her shadow-powered attacks hit their mark. She ended the fight quickly and cleanly.
After both moles were dead, she stored their huge bodies inside her storage space. She had planned from the beginning that she might need proof later.
Her plan had worked just as she had hoped.
As Liora stood there, feeling pleased with herself, a small voice broke her thoughts.
"But this area doesn’t have mutant beasts above level fifteen. If there are any, they live deep in the forest. They stay far away from the base."
Liora blinked and looked down. She saw little Eli standing beside her. He stared at her with clear, bright eyes. His voice sounded innocent but his words were sharp.
For a brief moment, she thought about how to respond. But instead of feeling nervous or annoyed, she smiled. She bent down and scooped him up into her arms.
"My clever little Eli," she said as she kissed his cheek. "You know everything, don’t you? My genius baby. Nothing can hide from your eyes."
She pouted as she gently pinched his soft cheek.
Eli’s face turned red at once. His small hands grabbed her sleeves. The serious genius boy suddenly became a shy little child.
"I am a big boy," he whispered. "I am not a baby anymore."
Even though he said that, the joy in his sparkling eyes could not be hidden. His aunt still loved him like always. Maybe she even loved him more than his own father did.
Liora laughed softly and teased him. "Yes yes, my big boy Eli. But big boys can still get kisses from their pretty sister."
Eli buried his face into her shoulder. He tried to hide his happy smile. As much as he acted mature, he enjoyed these moments the most.
Liora carried him away from the busy area. The sun was slowly going up as they walked quietly.
After a while, Liora whispered to him. "Eli, do you want to go somewhere exciting?"
Eli lifted his head. His eyes were full of curiosity. "Where?"
Liora smiled mysteriously. "It is a secret. But I know you will like it."
She stopped at a quiet and hidden place where no one could see them. She pulled out her teleportation ball again. This time she inserted a high-grade crystal. The ball glowed brighter than before.
Eli held her tightly. His eyes sparkled with excitement. "Let’s go!" he said.
He recognized it immediately.
He had seen this on his father and when he asked him this, he only received an eye roll and the advice to buy it by himself. His little mouth pouted. He was just a child. Who would be willing to sell him such a high-grade and luxurious thing? And most important, he did not have enough money to buy this.
He could only glare at his father with resentment but only got a provocative glare from him. "Humph! It is not like he can’t have this. If not him, he would ask for grandpa." But he did not get the chance before he arrived here and met his aunt.
But now looking at this teleportation ball, he was very happy and now he could have some fun.
The teleportation ball gave a gentle hum. In a flash of light, both of them disappeared. Only a soft breeze remained where they had stood.
Where they were going, only Liora knew.
