Chapter 110: Chapter 110: The Night We Almost Lost Everything
Chen Wei gritted his teeth and flashed forward first, his body a blur as he activated his speed ability. He slashed at the zombie’s side, but it twisted impossibly fast, dodging with a wet crack of its bones and swinging a huge fist at him.
Chen Wei barely managed to block it, but the force sent him skidding backward, his boots digging trenches into the broken ground.
"Attack together!" Liora shouted, finally pulling herself together. Fear still gripped her heart, but she forced it down and surged forward with her sword glowing faintly with mana.
Zhou Yinuo moved to the left, trying to flank the zombie. Liang Zihan pulled out the small boulder from the ground, and was trying to aim for its eyes.
Zhao Ren’s group hesitated only for a second before joining too.
But still, the zombie twisted its body again, and this time spikes grew out of its back, shooting outward like a rain of deadly projectiles.
"Watch out!" someone screamed as the spikes start falling on them from all the direction.
They scattered in all directions, some rolling across the ground, others jumping or ducking desperately in an attempt to avoid the deadly spikes. However, even with their frantic movements, a few of them were still grazed by the sharp projectiles. Blood splattered instantly across the broken road, painting the ground with a gruesome reminder of how dangerous the attack was.
Liora managed to dodge most of it, but a sharp spike still grazed her shoulder, ripping through her clothes and burning her skin. She gritted her teeth and pushed through the pain, raising her sword high and charging at the creature.
The zombie let out a furious snarl and punched at her. The two forces collided. The impact rang through her bones. Liora felt her bone crushing, but still her sword dug into the zombie’s arm, but it was like stabbing reinforced steel.
"Shit, its defense is insane!" she cursed, staggering back.
Zhou Yinuo managed to slice open a shallow wound on its back, but the creature barely flinched, spinning around and smashing her into the ground with a backhanded swing.
Chen Wei reappeared behind it in a flash, slashing at its spine, trying to disrupt it, but again—it adapted. Its skin hardened even further, like scales growing over its weak points.
The zombie was evolving even mid-battle.
Their attacks were not keeping up.
"Focus on its joints!" Liora shouted through gritted teeth, noticing how the creature’s limbs still showed some vulnerability when they shifted form.
Liang Zihan nodded and began throwing his daggers with frightening precision, aiming for the zombie’s knees and elbows.
Little by little, they began to find a rhythm, dodging its bone spikes, avoiding its spear-arm throws, and counterattacking in short bursts.
But every second was a brutal test of survival.
The zombie fought like a demon, every move was lethal and wild. The air grew heavier with each passing second as the zombie fought relentlessly, inflicting more and more severe injuries on them without stopping.
Zhao Ren was the first to fall, a deep gash tearing across his chest when he failed to dodge a spike in time. He slammed into the ground with a choked gasp, struggling to rise, but his hands just weakly fell on the ground.
"Ren!" Mei screamed hoarsely, but before she could reach him, the zombie’s whip-like arm lashed out again.
Mei was thrown like a ragdoll against the side of the hummer, coughing up blood as she crumpled to the floor.
Yan Lin, gritting her teeth until blood dripped down her chin, tried to cover her from another attack of the zombie, but her legs gave out and she collapsed too, still desperately trying to crawl toward her.
Ji Ming roared, blind with fury and despair as he looked at his friend’s body, the past flashing in front of his eyes. He charged towards the zombie with a broken sword—but it was useless.
The zombie barely even looked at him. It grabbed Ji Ming mid-swing and flung him like trash into a pile of rubble.
"NO!" Shen Haoran shouted, trying to run after him, but a spike caught him in the thigh mid-step. He fell hard, his scream was agonized as all of them fell one by one.
Everywhere Liora looked, there was blood, broken weapons, and her friends on the ground.
The noise of battle had turned into a nightmare of agony-filled screams, heavy breathing, and the thud of bodies hitting the ground.
Liora could not hear anything anymore but her own heart slamming painfully in her chest.
They were losing. They were dying.
"Stand up!" Liora shrieked, her voice breaking as she stumbled toward Mei and Yan Lin, her body battered and blood-soaked, her sword dragging against the ground.
"Get up! Please! We have to fight!" she begged, reaching down to pull Mei to her feet—but Mei’s eyes were closed, her breaths shallow and barely there.
A sob ripped from Liora’s throat as she watched, helpless, while her friends collapsed one by one. She could not believe what was happening. They were all losing consciousness right in front of her eyes, and she could do nothing to stop it.
Chen Wei staggered to her side, his entire left arm hanging uselessly, bleeding heavily. His steps were uneven, like he could fall any second, but his face was still set grimly, filled with agony and unbearable pain.
Zhou Yinuo, Liang Zihan, and Yun Shou were already lying weakly on the broken ground, too injured to even move. Their faces were pale and twisted with fear and pain. They could only watch in horror as the zombie, still standing tall and uninjured, slowly advanced towards them. It felt like they were trapped in a nightmare, helpless, broken, abandoned by every last bit of luck.
All of them were injured, their weapons scattered around them, their bodies trembling with exhaustion. They were all on the verge of losing consciousness, but the monster in front of them looked stronger than ever.
It was impossible to kill him now.
