Chapter 109: The target has appeared
Chapter 109: Chapter 109: The target has appeared
[The target has appeared, host should take immediate measures to complete the mission.]
While Liora was silently battling with herself, she suddenly heard the message from the system. Her eyes snapped upward in slight confusion.
What target?
But almost instantly, her eyes widened in realization.
There was no need for the system to explain. She knew. It could only be the Level 8 zombie.
This was the only mission she had left to complete right now.
"Fuck," Liora cursed under her breath, her voice low and trembling. Her luck could not have been any worse.
She could feel it—she was not in her best condition. Her mind was still spinning from earlier, her body heavier than usual.
And more importantly, she knew she did not have the capability yet to kill a Level 8 zombie.
Her hands trembled slightly as she clenched her mana sword tighter, forcing herself to stay standing. She looked around in fear, her heart pounding loudly in her ears, as if the monster would suddenly jump out from anywhere and rip her apart.
Her pale face did not go unnoticed.
Liang Zihan, who had been happily counting the crystals he had just gathered, frowned the moment he noticed the sudden change in her expression.
"Liora? Are you alright?" he asked cautiously, walking toward her with concern.
Zhou Yinuo, still wiping blood off her blade, also turned her head sharply. "Liora, you don’t look good," she said, her voice tense.
Chen Wei’s sharp eyes narrowed instantly. He tossed a crystal into the supplies bag and moved closer, watching her with a protective stance.
Liora could only shake her head weakly. Her throat was dry, words refusing to come out. Before she could even open her mouth to warn them, a sudden loud gust of wind blasted through the air.
The ground shook violently under their feet.
A massive shadow fell over them.
Something heavy slammed into the ground just a few meters away with a deafening boom. Dust exploded outward like a bomb, and the sheer force of it was like being hit by a speeding truck.
All of them were thrown backward several meters without a chance to react.
Liang Zihan crashed into the side of the hummer with a painful grunt. Zhou Yinuo hit the ground hard and rolled twice before she stopped, coughing violently as dust filled her lungs. Chen Wei managed to land on his feet but still stumbled heavily, his arm scraping badly against the broken asphalt.
Minor injuries, bruises, and cuts quickly covered all of them. None of them had been prepared for the sudden attack. Pain shot through their bodies. But even worse was the shock.
"What the hell just hit us?!" Liang Zihan cursed as he clutched his side in pain, blood dripping from a fresh cut on his forehead.
"Damn it!" Zhou Yinuo cursed softly, trying to lift herself up even as her arms trembled.
Chen Wei’s face darkened, his gaze locked onto the dust cloud in front of them, where something massive was starting to slowly emerge.
Their hearts sank heavily in their chests.
The dust slowly settled, revealing a figure standing in the middle of the crater.
At first glance, it looked like a man.
He stood upright. His body was lean and powerful, not like the rotten, mindless zombies they were used to seeing. His skin, though discolored and stretched tight over his muscles, still held a frightening strength.
His blackened veins pulsed underneath, and the smell—god, the smell—was the only thing that gave away what he truly was.
The rotting, sickening stench of death clung so thickly to the air that it made their stomachs churn.
But it was not just the smell. His aura was wrong too.
It was heavy, oppressive, far beyond any normal zombie. It was like standing under a crushing wave.
The creature’s yellowed eyes glowed with a faint eerie light.
Its movements were smooth and natural, without the usual sluggishness of the undead.
It was a zombie. But it was also... something more.
All of them instinctively stood up, wiping the blood and dust off their faces, forming a loose defensive line. Their weapons tightened in their hands.
Even Zhao Ren’s group, who had been tending to their supplies nearby, rushed over with wide eyes and tensed bodies.
"What the hell... is that thing?" Zhao Ren muttered, his voice low with disbelief.
"A zombie? No way..." someone from his team whispered, horrified.
Liang Zihan gritted his teeth. "But how? It’s walking normally, it’s freaking standing like us! And... isn’t it daylight?!"
Everyone knew that higher-level zombies usually avoided direct sunlight because of instability issues during evolution.
But this one...
This one was standing in broad daylight like it was nothing.
They had no time to think further.
The zombie suddenly roared, an ear-splitting sound that made the ground vibrate beneath their feet.
And in the next second—its right arm shifted grotesquely, the bones crunching and stretching, the flesh writhing and reshaping itself into a long, spear-like extension.
Before they could even fully process it, the zombie lunged forward and hurled its transformed arm at them like a massive javelin.
The speed was terrifying. The distance meant nothing to it.
"Move!" Chen Wei shouted, grabbing Liora by the waist and pulling her to the side just as the sharp, spear-like limb sliced through the air where she had just stood.
The attack slammed into the ground behind them with a deafening impact, sending debris flying.
Shock flickered across all their faces.
"This zombie... it’s using abilities!" Zhou Yinuo said, her voice strained as she blocked a flying stone with her blade.
"It’s like an ability user... it’s transforming!" Liang Zihan gasped, horror dawning in his eyes.
But the zombie was not done.
It roared again and pulled back its spear-like arm, the flesh twisting and reshaping back into a hand in an instant. Its body started shimmering—then bulged.
Muscles rippled under its skin, grotesquely growing larger. Its legs thickened and cracked as they reinforced themselves, making its figure even more monstrous.
It rushed at them with speed no zombie should have.
