Chapter 111: Chapter 111: The Night We Almost Lost Everything (02)

Maybe, they thought with a dull ache in their heart, that their time had finally come. Maybe they could finally leave this hellish place behind. Maybe they could start a new life somewhere else, in another world—one that was peaceful, without blood, without fear.

A tear escaped the corner of their eye, blurring their vision. They looked at their injured friends, at their broken bodies lying scattered across the ground. What had they not done to survive here? They had fought with everything they had. They had endured hunger, fear, betrayal, pain. Yet, in the end, was this their fate? To die here, so pitifully, like this?

Their hearts filled with hopelessness as the zombie took another step toward them, unbothered, and unstoppable.

Chen Wei, who was the only one still standing, finally fell with a heavy thud to the ground. His body twitched once and then stilled, his eyes flashing the same deep pain and unwillingness.

"No!" Liora screamed, her voice ripping from her chest like a wounded animal.

The zombie, hearing her scream, turned its ugly head towards her. Its face twisted in rage, and without hesitation, it abandoned Chen Wei and charged straight at her.

Liora, who was blinded by anger and pain, charged forward too. Her sword gripped tightly in her hand, her breath uneven, her heart screaming louder than her voice. She could not think anymore. Right or wrong no longer mattered to her. All she knew was that she had to kill this monster. She had to. She would not let it take her friends’ lives just like that.

But reality was crueler than dreams.

The zombie’s twisted arm shot forward faster than her eyes could follow. It grabbed her by the throat and lifted her clean off the ground.

Liora gasped as her breath was cut off. Her feet kicked helplessly in the air, her sword slipping from her hand and clattering uselessly to the ground below. The zombie squeezed harder, and she felt her bones creaking, her vision turning black around the edges. Tears streamed down her face as she struggled, her hands clawing desperately at the iron grip around her throat.

Her breathing became uneven, sharp bursts of air trying to squeeze through her crushed windpipe. Her mind screamed at her to fight, but her body was growing heavier and heavier, her strength draining away like water slipping through cracked fingers.

Inside the locked car, Eli’s small fists banged uselessly against the glass window.

"No! No! No!" he screamed, his voice high and panicked.

He watched helplessly as Liora dangled in the zombie’s grip, her body jerking weakly.

He tried the car door, twisting the handle again and again, but it was locked tight. He did not even know how to open it. He was just a child in a body, too weak, too small and too scared. He cried in frustration, slamming his fists harder against the glass until they turned red.

His eyes snapped to the zombie, his eyes flashing with helplessness as he remembered his mind control was not working on the zombie at all, but still he tried once again maybe this time it would work.

He closed his eyes and focused, trying to reach out with his ability—but a sharp pain stabbed through his skull like a burning knife. He staggered back, while clutching his head. Why was it not working? His power was the one thing he could rely on, but now it was rejecting him too.

It hurt more than anything. His head pounded violently. He felt a wall around the zombie’s mind, a strong and unbreakable wall. No matter how hard he pushed, it refused to let him in. It was like trying to push through solid stone.

Was it because his body was still too weak? Was it because he had already used his power once when he arrived here and this body could not withstand it anymore? Or maybe—maybe this zombie was too powerful. Or maybe someone had intentionally protected its mind.

Eli’s eyes turned cold, his small fists clenching tightly. A deep fear gnawed at him. Just who was playing with them? Who had thrown them into this nightmare?

But he could not think about that now. Liora was still struggling, her hands growing weaker and weaker.

He had to do something.

His eyes darted around frantically—and then he saw it.

A small bug, crawling over the edge of the broken car window.

Without hesitation, Eli reached out with his mind. The bug’s eyes lost all color, turning glassy. It was easily controlled by him.

He sent it flying towards the zombie. The tiny creature was weak, but it was enough.

The bug latched onto the zombie’s face, scratching madly with its tiny legs.

The zombie roared in irritation, its grip loosening slightly. Liora fell, crashing onto the ground like a broken doll. She coughed violently, gasping for air as her chest burned.

The zombie, furious, crushed the bug with one swipe. Its small body was torn into two pieces, falling lifelessly to the ground.

But before Liora could even catch her breath properly, a sudden roar split the air.

The zombie, its eyes burning with a deeper rage, threw its head back and howled. Blood poured out from its twisted body, and in the next second, sharp bloody spikes erupted all over its skin, shooting out wildly in every direction.

Liora’s heart nearly stopped.

She tried to move, tried to scream, but it was too fast.

The spikes tore through the air like deadly rain, piercing everything around them.

Zhou Yinuo, Liang Zihan, Yun Shou, and even Chen Wei—all of them, were too weak to dodge and too injured to even lift their heads were struck with the spikes.

Their bodies jerked helplessly as the bloody thorns ripped into them, their flesh torn and soon blood spraying like broken fountains.

Liora stared, her mind blank, her vision shaking violently as she watched her friends’ bodies being torn apart, pierced again and again by the cruel spikes.

She saw Zhou Yinuo’s hand twitch once, reaching out weakly toward the sky, before falling still.

Liang Zihan’s eyes, once filled with stubbornness and unwillingness, slowly closed, blood trickling from the corners.

Yun Shou’s breath rattled out in a broken, helpless sound, his chest riddled with bloody holes.

Chen Wei... even Chen Wei, the strongest of them, his body full of bloody holes, his blood soaking the ground under him, his breath fading... gone.

"No..." Liora whispered hoarsely, her voice trembling as her vision blurred more and more.

She could not move. She could not think.

All she could do was watch as the people she fought for, the people she laughed and cried with, the people she swore to survive with... were dying in front of her eyes.

Her mind felt like it was tearing apart. The horror, the pain, the helplessness—they wrapped around her chest and squeezed until she could not breathe again.

Her throat tightened and her heart screamed in rage. And then—something in her snapped. A bloody scream ripped from her lungs, tearing through the thick bloody air.

"Emerge!!"

The word, full of agony, full of despair, shook the ground around her.
