Chapter 104: A deeper character
The noble smiled when he saw how serious they were. He recalled something that his grandfather had shown him down in the deepest part of their home. It would be a nice thing to experiment on these two.
"Alright then, let’s carry out the oath. I believe I have something that will be able to give the both of you the power needed to take down those students, as long as you are willing to take the risk," he said.
"If it means becoming demons, I’ll do it, as long as they get destroyed," he responded with conviction.
Mathias stood in the back watching. He clenched his fist, trying to make up his mind to go through with this. A part of him told him that his failure was his fault, but the beauty of believing that it wasn’t made him not want to accept that.
After the agreement, the noble led both of them out of the alley, the smile on his face refusing to go down like a man who had just won a lottery.

Inside the restaurant, Mia paid for the damages they had caused and they both left. She didn’t apologize, she only paid, but that made sense as she would be apologizing to a noble, something that wasn’t really part of the system.
"You should have let me pay," Riven said.
"I’m the one who beat them up and caused the damages, so it’s only right the responsibility falls to me," she said.
"If I hadn’t stabbed the man, none of this would have happened, so it’s my fault," Riven argued.
"Even if you had not stabbed him, I would have, and there’s a high chance that mine would have killed him," she responded.
’She is one stubborn character. Why did Frozen Fish have to write her this way? It takes a lot to get to her,’ Riven thought. ’But then again, this is not a book anymore. Characters aren’t as rigid as the ones bound by pages. This is reality,’ he thought, and with this thought in mind, he grabbed her hand.
She was stunned by this sudden contact and turned to look at him. He flashed her a smile. "Don’t be so uptight. I’m your master, right? I should be the one to pay for things. And besides that, what’s the role of a gentleman if not for things like this?" Riven said.
Her face morphed into a frown and she pulled her hand away. "Don’t touch me," she said and kept walking.
’Hmm, I see. She automatically gets defensive when her independence is targeted. There was no in depth explanation of her past in the story. Frozen Fish simply used her as a generic female lead.
It finally makes sense why her character was pretty much the same through the series, the only change being that she fell in love with the hero. No, that wasn’t love. She was obsessed with his strength and believed it to be love.
There is only one thing she loves, and that’s getting stronger and that’s probably tied to the reason she tried to be independent most of the time. She gave Lance a tough time, not wanting him until after the first or second major event, where she believed his strength was what she needed.
I think Mia had a dark past never spoken about in the book. She is trying to get stronger as if preparing for something. What could it be, Mia?’ Riven wondered. He watched her walk away, her proud stance and condescending gaze were all a facade to hide a broken girl.
"Frozen Fish, when next you write a book, don’t leave out their past. Else how can they grow?" Riven muttered before he kept walking.
After their interaction, the mood had gone sour, so Riven decided to lighten it up. He rushed up to Mia and asked a question.
"Mia, let’s have a small competition—you and me hunting monsters. I think there should be a C-class dungeon somewhere in the capital, right?" he asked.
She stopped after he asked, seemingly interested in that. "The both of us can’t go alone, even for a low-ranked dungeon—academy rules. We need a party of at least six," she said.
’Huh? I don’t recall such a rule in the book. Lance cleared lots of dungeons on his own in the story. What changed?’ Riven thought.
"Why so?" he asked.
"Normally the academy allowed students to go in in twos and threes, and on special occasions, alone. But of recent—let’s say a month back—some monsters started dropping red crystals unlike the others.
Those monsters were unique and extremely dangerous. They were normally twice the strength of the normal monster, and they also grew by consuming humans and their fellow monsters, making them incredibly strong.
The dungeons are known to have an infinite number of monsters, and so those red-crystal-dropping monsters can keep growing.
There was even once that one was reported to have become a terrifying boss—it killed the former floor boss and took its place.
Because of them alone, the death rate in dungeons has tripled in the last month," she explained everything in detail. Riven was shocked that she gave her time to explain this much, but what shocked him more was that the red crystal type of monsters he found in the dungeon would become such a threat.
"The greatest issue is that it’s hard to spot them. The only way is that, unlike other monsters that want to kill you, the red crystal monsters have a very strong bloodlust. And the more they kill, the more a dark red mist forms around their bodies," she added.
"Hmmm, now I’m definitely curious. Let’s head back to the academy and gather up a party and find a dungeon. I want to see exactly what these red crystal monsters are about," Riven said. Mia could see the eagerness in his eyes and it made her smile. He was someone that loved fighting like her.
