Chapter 73: Check-up
Chapter 73: Check-up
"Oh my, are you already expecting a child?" Scarlet inquired, both surprised and touched as she placed her hand on Aurora’s stomach, hoping to feel any sign of movement.
"It takes months before a baby starts moving," Aurora pointed out, momentarily forgetting that she wasn’t pregnant. Standing up, she placed a hand on Scarlet’s shoulder and clarified, "I am not pregnant."
"But you have had intimate relations, so there might be a baby. Let’s get you tested," Scarlet suggested eagerly, unable to contain her excitement at the thought of Aurora having a child.
Frustrated, Aurora reluctantly allowed Scarlet to lead her out of the room. She wasn’t feeling well, and perhaps a check-up wouldn’t hurt.
"What should we name the child? Vincent?" Scarlet asked with enthusiasm as they headed towards the pack’s hospital. Aurora could see the joy on Scarlet’s face, and it made her wonder about Scarlet’s feelings towards children.
"Do you love kids?" Aurora inquired.
"Absolutely! They are blessings from Selena. I was going to name my baby girl blessing, if...." Scarlet replied before trailing off, realizing she may have said too much.
"You had a child?" Aurora asked, curious about Scarlet’s statement. If Scarlet did have a child, Aurora wondered where the child was.
"I mean, if I ever have a child, I would name her Blessing. I have always wanted a baby girl," Scarlet quickly corrected herself, picking up her pace toward the pack hospital.
Though not entirely convinced by Scarlet’s words, Aurora decided not to press further. It seemed unlikely that Scarlet had given birth without anyone knowing.
After all, they had been together in the mansion for ages and she hadn’t seen her pique an interest in a man. She assumed Scarlet was simply overexcited and misspoke. But a lingering suspicion remained.
"What name do you have in mind?" Scarlet asked as they neared the garden, where Damien and Sarah were playing with the children.
"I haven’t really thought about it. The contract doesn’t mention anything about naming the child," Aurora replied, nervously scratching her neck. She hadn’t considered much beyond giving birth and handing the child over to Damien.
Before Lucas’s betrayal, she had plans to have a baby, but now she wasn’t sure if she could be a good mother while dealing with her past traumas and seeking revenge for her parents’ death.
Annoyed, Scarlet halted and turned to face Aurora. "You don’t have plans for the child coming out of your womb?" Scarlet questioned, aware of the contractual limitations but still believing Aurora should have a role in the child’s life.
"The contract states that I won’t be recognized as the child’s mother, and Theresa will assume that role," Aurora explained. As they discussed it, she realized how absurd some of the rules were, though Damien did give her more choices than most breeders had.
During the earlier generations of werewolves, breeders had no say in their children’s lives, often having many without knowing what became of them.
Damien’s offer to stay in the pack and the possibility of seeing her child from a distance were unique privileges. Whether or not she leaves was her choice but taking care of the child was against her choice.
Scarlet couldn’t fully understand why Aurora would willingly give up her role as a mother when she was still alive and well.
"I don’t fully understand your reasoning, but it’s your first child. It would be hard to not be a part of their life," Scarlet reasoned.
"But I have to leave," Aurora pointed out.
"Don’t you plan to come back? Blood is thicker than water, Aurora. You wouldn’t want to part with your child so easily," Scarlet advised, speaking as if she had experienced childbirth herself. She might not have given birth to her own child but she knew how hard it is to leave your child for another woman to cater for.
"I am feeling lost," Aurora admitted with a sigh. No one had warned her that intimacy could bring such complications, intertwining her experiences and traumas.
If her original plans had succeeded, she might have already achieved her revenge within Lucas’s pack. But then Damien had emerged when she was escaping, changing everything.
"I am here for you. Let’s go get you checked up for now," Scarlet said, offering a reassuring smile as they began walking. Aurora nodded in agreement, forgetting that she wasn’t pregnant and didn’t require a check-up.
As they reached the garden, Aurora’s mind wandered, and she didn’t immediately notice Damien until she heard Sarah’s giggling voice. Looking up, she saw Sarah teaching Damien how to use a sweeping net and how pleased he seemed when he caught something.
"He acts like he’s all serious," Scarlet muttered, annoyed by Damien’s presence. She shifted her gaze and noticed Enoch’s happy face, filming Sarah and Damien. It irritated her to see him supporting their relationship after his previous behavior. Scarlet regretted attempting to apologize for her mistake, realizing Enoch was still a scumbag.
Aurora didn’t want to be near Damien, so she tugged at Scarlet’s hand, urging her to keep walking.
"Got it," Scarlet replied, quick to comply.
Unfortunately, someone had keen senses and picked up Aurora’s scent. He turned his body, spotting Scarlet leading Aurora away, which soured his mood.
"That’s enough for today," Sarah, who had been having fun with Damien, frowned when he threw the sweeping net to her and started walking away.
Curious about his sudden departure, she grew furious when she saw him walking towards Aurora and another woman. Sarah considered the woman a threat to her plans. She believed this woman was trying to ruin things and wouldn’t allow her to have Damien peacefully.
"I will make you weep," Sarah vowed, her eyes blazing with anger as she tightened her hold on the sweeping net.
"Luna, you are holding the sweeping net too hard," a little kid who noticed called her attention to it and she immediately released her hold on it, smiling brightly at the kid
