Chapter 70: Edward sobbed

Edward was escorted to his family’s gravesite in the pack. Upon reaching his father’s tombstone, he picked up a small flower nearby and placed it on the grave.

"Father, were you a bad father?" Edward asked dejectedly, sitting beside the tombstone and regretfully sobbing. He wished he hadn’t been so oblivious to the truth around him and had noticed the wrongdoings in their upbringing.

He had never harbored any ill intentions towards his brother, believing the same to be true for Cane. However, after Cane returned to the pack during their father’s illness, Edward discovered the painful reality.

"I do not resent Cane, I wish you had loved us equally," Edward continued sobbing, wiping away the tears as they fell.

"You make it difficult for me," Cane’s annoyed voice interrupted from behind Edward, causing him to frown. Cane had never visited their father’s grave since his death, and he appeared anxious and shocked to see him there now.

"Don’t be fazed. He may not have been the best father, but he brought me into this world," Cane explained, showing no compassion as he dropped a rotten flower on the gravestone.

"Why did you never confront him?" Edward asked softly.

"What does it matter? His favorite son would always be there for him. I am just a pawn he used to secure his place on the throne," Cane replied, his hands in his pockets.

"What do you mean?" Edward inquired, curious about Cane’s statement.

"Poor thing. I bet you didn’t know your father married my mother to become Alpha. The Elders wouldn’t have allowed him to take the position if he hadn’t sacrificed his love for the throne," Cane smirked, relishing in revealing the bitter truth to his unsuspecting half-brother.

Edward had been so pampered that he grew up spoiled, always expecting things to revolve around him. With the lies and smiles their father showered upon him, he turned out to be a privileged son.

"You are lying. We are from the same mother," Edward denied, shaking his head in disagreement.

Cane moved closer to Edward, whispering in his ear, "You are a bastard!" The words echoed in Edward’s head, leaving him in shock and panic.

"I..." Edward tried to speak but was too overwhelmed to find the right words. The revelation was beyond his comprehension.

When he had doubts about his origin, their father would assure him that he took after him, explaining why he didn’t resemble Luna, who was Cane’s mother. Everyone had told him the same, so why had they all lied to him?

"Why didn’t you tell me?!" Edward yelled at Cane, grabbing him by the collar.

"What fun would it be? I would have missed seeing the hopeless look on your face right now!" Cane taunted, laughing maniacally.

Edward’s head began to ache, and he felt dizzy, almost falling to the ground.

"So, who is my mother?" He asked, seeking answers.

"Ahh, didn’t you feel a strange bond with your nanny? It was quite obvious that they were in a relationship whenever my mother was in tears," Cane revealed.

Edward was taken aback. Was that why Cane’s mother always seemed sad, even when there was no apparent reason? Cane’s mother treated him like her own son and never made him feel like she wasn’t his mother.

Had he and his mother been the intruders all along? Was his mother pretending to be his nanny just so she could be with her true love?

All this time, Edward believed that Cane envied him because he wanted the throne for himself. Was it all about revenge?

Cane chuckled and began walking away. "Here’s a tip. I killed your mother, it wasn’t a wild animal attack," he confessed, smirking with satisfaction about his cruel deeds.

Edward’s mouth opened, but he couldn’t find the words to respond. The shock overwhelmed him, and he didn’t know how to react.

He had noticed an unusual closeness between his father and his nanny, but he never expected his father to be so heartless as to ruin someone’s life for his own happiness.

He blamed himself for making Cane’s life difficult, as he had unknowingly been the cause of Cane’s brutality. If only his mother had been willing to let go of her love life for the sake of peace.

"Cane, on behalf of our father and mother, I am sorry," Edward pleaded, kneeling down.

Cane clenched his fists, annoyed that Edward wouldn’t let him have his revenge with a heavy heart. He couldn’t afford to let sympathy interfere with his plans for ruthless vengeance. He intended to shatter the empire his father believed he had built by becoming a tyrannical Alpha.

"Isn’t it too late for that?" Cane coldly brushed off Edward’s sincere apology and walked away.

"Cane," Edward called after him, but Cane paid no attention and continued until he was out of the graveyard.

"It’s time to leave," Cane’s assistant declared as he approached Edward. Edward nodded, understanding that Cane had no intention of letting go of his past.

Edward left the graveyard and headed for the pack’s border. Cane had given him some of his belongings and a little money, but Edward refused to accept any of it, leaving the pack empty-handed.

Now standing at the pack’s border, Edward looked back and muttered, "I hope you find peace, brother."

He smiled sadly as he looked toward the pack. Coincidentally, Cane stood in his room at the pack house, gazing at the mountains through his window.

"I hope you die so I won’t feel guilty anymore," Cane muttered, turning away from the window.

Edward walked away from the pack border and eventually reached the main street of the country.

People looked at him suspiciously, and many avoided him, thinking he was a madman in torn clothes.

Edward’s stomach grumbled when he came across a restaurant, making his mouth water for food. He couldn’t help but wonder if he should have accepted the money after all.

"What a life. Would you like to work with me?" A kind voice asked.
