Chapter 69: Half-brothers

Outside Damien’s pack, the tension between Edward and his brother reached a boiling point.

Edward accused his brother, Cane,of wanting him dead,"You wanted Damien to kill me!" His anger fuelled the fiery blaze in his eyes as he unsheathed his claws, ready for a fight.

"You have to lose something to get something," Cane retorted with a maniacal laugh, reveling in Edward’s gullibility. He had manipulated his brother, and Edward fell into his trap, blinded by rage.

"I will kill you!" Edward threatened, forcefully pushing the table aside that separated them in the dining hall. It took him two weeks to recover from the previous incident, thanks to Cane’s misinformation.

If only he hadn’t let anger cloud his judgment, he wouldn’t have fallen into his brother’s snare. Why was Cane determined to get what he wants by killing him? How could a murderer lead innocent lives?

"Can you?" Cane taunted, flashing a sly grin at Edward. He mocked his brother’s impulsiveness, the very reason the pack wanted to get rid of Edward. Cane was the true heir to the Alpha position, not Edward.

Growling, Edward lunged at Cane, gripping his neck with his claws and drawing blood. Despite the pain, Cane laughed, seemingly unaffected by the assault. Annoyed, Edward threw him against the wall and transformed into his wolf form.

"Alright, let’s play," Cane remarked, shifting into his own wolf form to engage in a fierce battle with his brother.

Their intense fight attracted attention in the pack house, but Cane’s assistant made sure no one entered the dining hall to interfere.

During the duel, Cane managed to land several claw strikes on Edward’s wolf, while Edward could only scratch Cane’s neck.

Ultimately, Cane delivered the final blow, knocking Edward down. Both brothers reverted to their human forms, with Cane’s clothes in tatters. Edward was severely injured and reluctantly shifted back to his human form, filled with regret.

Approaching his fallen brother, Cane bent down and touched Edward’s artificial ear, questioning him, "What’s the essence of having ears if you only use them to listen to your decisions?" Cane removed the artificial ear, revealing Edward’s injured ear, which he lost during the attack on Damien.

"Why do you hate me so much?" Edward groaned in pain, seeking answers.

"Hate is a strong word. I detest your attitude. You act as if everything revolves around you, disregarding how your actions affect others," Cane replied with a tone of sincerity, though Edward sensed there was more to Cane’s animosity. Hate was only a strong word for those who didn’t want others dead.

Edward and Cane were half-brothers, their father bore Edward with his first love, while Cane’s mother was not loved by their father. While their father was alive, Edward was favored and loved more than Cane, which created resentment in Cane’s heart.

Cane left the pack when he couldn’t bear witnessing the love between his father and Edward, only to return when their father was on his deathbed. He managed to gain sympathy from some of their father’s followers, who supported his claim to the Alpha position.

However, their father had left a will appointing Edward as the next Alpha, making it difficult for them to forsake Edward and side with Cane.

Cane knew that the oath taken by the pack Elders to protect him prevented anyone from killing him directly. Nevertheless, Cane was the only one who might attempt to take his life, given the opportunity.

"What about you? You crave the Alpha position so you can avenge what our father did to you," Edward mocked, laughter tinged with bitterness in his voice.

Edward came to the realization that he lacked the wisdom to lead the pack, and he also acknowledged that Cane was not qualified for leadership due to his capability of killing his own followers. Edward had witnessed Cane’s strong killing intent when they were younger.

"You are finally getting smart," Cane mused, surprising Edward with his admittance. Cane had seemingly reached a point of insanity and no longer cared about being exposed. After all, the only person Cane feared was already dead.

"You have the choice to leave the pack on your own, or I can ensure you depart with your soul alone," Cane threatened, pretending to care as he kissed Edward’s forehead.

Edward was taken aback by the forehead kiss, reminiscent of how he used to ask for such affection from Cane when they were young, only to be ignored.

"That’s my apology to you. I hope we may meet again in the afterlife or our next life," Cane said before walking away. Edward couldn’t help but call after him, using the term ’brother’ for the first time in years, hoping to see if Cane still had any lingering brotherly feelings.

"As of today, I have no brother. Leave well, Edward," Cane hesitated before firmly stating, and he exited the dining hall.

"Make sure he leaves the pack tonight and stage his death," Cane instructed his assistant, who was standing by the door, and received a blanket to cover his nakedness.

"Alright," the assistant replied, puzzled by Cane’s demeanor. Was Cane feeling sorrow or not? The assistant had hoped Edward would step down so that Cane could assume the role of Alpha, but Edward refused to do so, prompting Cane to resort to sinister tactics.

Inside the hall, Edward lay flat on the floor, lost in thoughts of his childhood memories with Cane. Despite Edward’s attempts to be happy with Cane, the affection was never reciprocated.

Edward realized that in their youth, he was too young to understand the damage their father was causing to their future. Cane craved love, and perhaps if he had received it, they wouldn’t have turned out this way.

"Edward, I am here to escort you out of the pack," the assistant announced, entering the hall.

"Is that what he wants?" Edward inquired, referring to Cane.

"Yes," the assistant confirmed.

"Very well, I will leave after visiting our father’s grave," Edward agreed and responded.
