Chapter 190: Pitiful look

"What did you just say?" Anxious, Lucas gestured for the guard to come forward and questioned.

"While I was fighting, a she-wolf secretly dragged me away and her company told me to seek your audience." The guard did as instructed, clarifying.

"You want me to believe this is not a trap?" Unable to trust the words of the guard, he confronted him, instilling fear in the guard that almost made the guard run away.

"Did she drop any hints?" Coming to the rescue of the guard, Lucas’s beta asked the guard who pondered for some seconds before answering, "Yes, she said ’The inevitable.’"

Upon hearing that, Lucas’ mind flashed back to years ago and an ugly memory came into existence.

"It is Aurora, lead me to her." Finally accepting the words of the guard, he ordered and the guard immediately led the way.

"You will stay here," he commanded his beta who was about to follow after him.

"Alpha..." cutting him off, Lucas repeated, "You will stay here!" His gaze was stern as he threatened his beta.

Relenting, his beta simply nodded his head and watched him leave the tent with the guard. There was nothing he could do if Lucas kept on being stubborn, his mother would rule in his stead anyway.

Even while he was the Alpha of their pack, everyone knew it was his mother playing the shots and he couldn’t handle anything himself. If she wasn’t severely ill at the moment, she would have been here to guide him in this preposterous act.

Like a mother, like a son. She has damaged Lucas beyond repair and their only hope for his sanity was the child in Luna’s stomach. A child they weren’t sure he was going to love at the moment, but Lucas won’t be so cruel as to neglect an innocent child.

At this point, Lucas’s fate was clear, it would be best to let destiny take its course.

"He is here," Scarlet stood defiantly in front of Aurora, watching out for Lucas’s arrival. Aurora didn’t see the need to be overly protective, but she didn’t complain.

"I am certain you remember me, Alpha Lucas." Grabbing the attention that was already on Aurora, Scarlet spoke, coming to stand in front of Lucas to block his view.

About snapping, Lucas halted when he realized the familiar face in front of him and scoffed.

"If it isn’t the maid that turned out to be the arrogant Alpha’s loyalist, Damien, who else could it be?" Ironically, he said, recalling his encounter with her. He should have suspected something was wrong the moment she willingly offered to escort him to town, despite knowing what could happen.

He could have forced himself on her that day and framed her for seducing him and yet, she followed after him with no fear. But she already knew what he wanted and so, she boldly took the poor maid’s place.

"Oh Alpha Lucas, you will be surprised to know how much more I could be. And for the record, I am only loyal to my beliefs." Smirking, she said, correcting him of the accusations even though they were useless.

"Unless you are planning to give me what I want, I suggest you move away so I can have a word with my MATE." Staring down at her, he commanded, making sure to emphasize the last word mate which made Scarlet scoff in utter disbelief.

"Mate? Such effrontery, have you no shame, Alpha Lucas?" She questioned, raising her eyebrow disgustingly at him. If there was someone she hated more than Damien, it would be Lucas, he was even more shameless than she imagined.

"Shame? Shame is for those who have something to lose," He responded and chuckled.

"Then you are not fit to be an Alpha if your people are not something to lose," Scarlet insulted, causing Aurora to immediately step in, seeing as things were about to get bloody.

"Scarlet, please calm down. Remember we are only here to talk, we don’t have to fight." Coming in between them, she dropped her hand on Scarlet’s shoulder and urged, hoping the latter heeded her pleas.

Glancing at Lucas one more time, Scarlet hissed and started walking away.

"Aurora," once Scarlet was out of sight, Lucas made a pitiful look and called, moving closer to touch Aurora.

"I am not here to offer myself up, Lucas. I am here to warn you to stop this insane war instantly," raising her hand to stop him from coming further, she disclosed.

"Pardon me, but did you grow more naive? You and I both know the reason I am here is you, why would I leave without you?" Running his hands through this hair, he questioned, finding it absurd that she would warn him.

"Lucas, why are you doing this to me? You rejected me, killed my family, tortured me, and made me a slave, all by yourself. Only to come back five years later and want to reclaim me after seeing me happy, what have I ever done to you?" Frustrated, Aurora asked, recounting all he had done to her like he was never there. All she wanted was a happy home, a husband, and a family, but Lucas was too gullible to trust his mate, or perhaps selfish.

"Aurora, not once did I ever stop looking for you after everything that happened. It just never crossed my mind that you would be..." cutting him off, she said, "mated to an Alpha, right?" And sighed.

"I meant no disrespect, Aurora." He immediately apologized before she mistook his words.

Shaking her head, Aurora stood speechless, both of them staring at each other as if they were void of words.

Breaking the silence, Lucas said, "You know, I might have been stupid to have completely believed my fake mate but Damien would do the same if he is ever faced with that choice."

"No! No! No! and No! That is a lie you tell yourself to make yourself feel better about your mistakes. Damien is not like you, he is not gullible enough to let his mother control him!!" Yelling, Aurora argued, defending Damien. She was not a fool and she was sure Lucas had a choice back then, he was just too cowardly to take it.

"Fine. But you know I loved you?" Seeing that the first plan wasn’t working, he diverted to another one.

Bursting into laughter, Aurora covered her mouth to avoid drawing attention and said, "Says the man that slept with his fake mate because I couldn’t give him sex." The shock on Lucas’s face was evident, and she was finally able to confirm her suspicion from years back.

"How did you know?"
