Chapter 155: Older women

Frowning, Dave asked, "What do you mean?"

Beta Madrid smiled and folded his hands in front of him, saying, "Though you might be the brother of the Alpha respected by Alpha Nureo, the fact remains that you were the man that caused Lady Charlotte pain." Those words struck a chord in Dave and it felt like his ear wasn’t working for a moment.

The more he was being reminded of what he did in the past, the more guilt ate him up.

"I...What can I do to correct that?" He asked, ashamed of himself.

"I believe that’s something you should be able to figure out yourself if you are truly here for her," Madrid answered.

"But..." Interrupting him, Madrid said, "Of course, if you need help with arranging anything, I would put some guards under your command for as long as you are here."

"Oh, that’s a lot. Thanks," expressing his gratitude, he expressed shock at how special he was being treated. Something told him Bbleta Madrid was willing to help him but wanted him to figure out the problem himself.

"If that’s all, then have a good night, Dave." Madrid bid him farewell and promptly left his room.

Sighing, Dave strode toward the window and gazed out of it, wondering where Charlotte’s room was in this big expansion. When he didn’t seem to figure out which was her room, he left the window and went to lie on the bed.

Tomorrow is going to be another day. Hopefully, it isn’t as bad as he thinks. Now he needed to get some good sleep to enable him to work efficiently well on claiming his mate.

The following morning.

Alpha Nureo was now awake and receiving information from Madrid in his study room concerning Dave’s arrival.

"What do you plan to do with him?" Carefully, Madrid asked.

"What else? Send him away politely," blatantly, Alpha Nureo answered, shrugging at his response.

"Really? Are you trying to test him?" Knowing fully well that Nureo’s conscience wouldn’t allow him to chase away Dave, he asked.

"What do you think?" Raising his brow, Nureo asked.

"Whatever I am thinking is probably what Charlotte is thinking, don’t hurt her while trying to protect her," Madrid advised.

"So what do you want me to do? Give my only sister to that playboy?" He asked, seemingly annoyed. He expected Madrid to take his side and not defend someone who caused his sister pain more than anything.

The fact that they were mates was what made him hesitate in making the right decision. He couldn’t deny his sister or her mate as he knew the importance of mates. Yet, he couldn’t trust his sister in the hands of Dave. They knew how well she suffered from heartbreaks back then, he didn’t want to see her go through that pain again.

"I never said so, don’t misinterpret my words." Madrid corrected, folding his hands in front of him, a habit of his that meant he was serious which always annoyed Nureo.

"What are you then saying?" Abruptly standing up, he asked, anger boiling in his eyes.

"I need you to calm down first, you can’t think in this state." With a stern voice, Madrid scolded, both of them staring deeply at each other until Nureo averted his gaze and sat hesitantly.

"To be honest, I am torn between making her happy or taking my own decision." After he was calm, he confessed, rubbing his forehead from the throbbing headache disturbing him. Since their mother’s death, he had taken charge of her life, nurturing her until she grew into a fine woman.

And while he was busy with pack duties five years back, Charlotte was struggling with her love life and he couldn’t be there for her. Now that he had the chance to set things right, his hands were tied.

These are the times he wished their mother was still alive. Wise and nice, she knows the role of a mother in her children’s lives. She was the best mother one could ever have, but the lowly humans just took her away from them so early.

The reason he worked so hard was so he didn’t turn out like their greedy father. If not for his covetous personality, their mother would still be alive.

"What matters is what she wants, but are you ready to let her go?" Madrid asked, exposing his real concern. No, he wasn’t, he was afraid of letting her go. She has suffered so much at the hands of men, what if Dave turns out to be the wrong one again?

He wasn’t surprised about Ronald as he already made his findings and found out that his story wasn’t entirely true. He tried to tell Charlotte but she had left for Alpha Damien’s pack and it was too late for him.

"What if I am not?" He asked.

"Then you should get to know what she wants first, maybe it would help you let go. After all, you are after her happiness," he advised and Nureo sighed, finding sense in what he said.

"Is that all you have to say?" Nureo asked, knowing that Madrid always had more to say but always reserved it. If he was still the same beta he had always been best friends with, then he had something to say.

Since he became the Alpha, they had grown apart but he respected his wish and didn’t make things difficult for both of them.

"Is there something you want me to say? Retorting, Madrid asked, unfolding his arms that signalled a red flag.

"No," brushing it off, Nureo replied and dismissed him with a wave.

"Breakfast is in an hour, do not be late." He remembered and started making his way to the door.

Before dropping his hand on the knob of the door, he stood there and said, "If I was in your situation, I would try to trust my sister’s mate. Everyone makes mistakes, what makes it better is how we overcome them." Then he left Nureo’s room.

With a meaningful look, Nureo stared at the door, pondering how he could make a perfect decision.

Dave was already awake but he found it hard to wake up as he was troubled. How was he going to convince Alpha Nureo that he was going to be a perfect man for her? He was far from perfect, telling him that would be a lie. He could only be himself but would that help the situation?

Knock knock

A knock on his door interrupted his thoughts, making him stand up to open the door for whoever it was.

"Good morning," it was Louis, he looked excited, causing Dave to wonder what he was happy about. They only just arrived here so what could be behind his smile?

"Morning, you look energetic." Moving away for Louis to enter, he commented.

"Oh, is it that obvious?" He asked.

"Pretty much," Dave answered.

"There’s no need to hide it anymore. I left my room very early this morning and was graced with a tour by a good Samaritan." The way he heard those words, Dave could easily predict who the good samaritan was. How naive, he must have little experience with women.

"Is she older?" He asked, taking off his shirt.

"Yes...wait, I don’t know." Realizing he had just given off the identity of the "Good Samaritan", he immediately changed his words and looked away, too shy to look at Dave with his face looking all red.

"So you prefer them old?" Teasing, he asked.

"I have no idea what you mean," lying, he said and moved away.

"You have good preferences, I also prefer them old. They are more experienced," smirking, he kept on teasing him, raising his brow playfully at Louis.

"Have you taken your bath?" Changing the topic, Louis asked.

"I am planning to." He answered, as a matter of fact.

"But I heard something about Damien wanting to breed you for his daughter. How do you go about it?" Diverting back the topic, Dave said, grinning. He enjoyed seeing the cute face on Louis and he derived joy from it.

Well, now that he was in his hands, he was going to teach Louis the way of the real men outside. He is young, but he will learn from the best.

"Why do you keep on talking about inappropriate things?" Irritated, Louis asked, turning his back to leave before things got awkward for him.

As he was about to open the door, the door flew open revealing the man from yesterday, Beta Madrid.

"Ahh, it’s good to see you here. I was looking for you," facing Louis, he relayed and entered the room.

"Oh, I just went sightseeing." He answered.

"I am happy you are enjoying our pack. Do let me know if you want to go for more tours," he said and Louis smiled, loving the man’s company. He couldn’t help imagining how happy his wife would be in their union.

"Dave, breakfast is ready. Once you are done, come down with Louis." He informed and left after receiving a nod from Dave.
