Alpha Damien's Breeder: The first night -
Chapter 150: Phantom Hills
Chapter 150: Phantom Hills
"A car? What’s that?" Growing even more curious, Louis approached the car, parting his mouth in shock when he saw how large and impressive it was. He hadn’t had the chance to learn about the outside world, thanks to his wicked foster mother.
While he knew a lot about the outside world, the term "CAR" had never reached his ears. Could it be a mysterious device? When he didn’t receive a reply from the guard, he looked up at him with innocent eyes.
"Are you kidding? Who doesn’t know what a car is?" The guard asked, glaring down at Louis, assuming he was teasing him. To him, even a four-year-old knew what a car was. They had car toys, and even if Louis had never played with them, he should still know what a car was.
"I don’t," he replied bluntly, earning a growl from the guard, causing him to inch backward. Louis had asked an innocent question, so why was the guard getting worked up?
"It’s fine if you don’t want to tell me," Louis said, and the guard walked away, irritated by the boy.
"Wow, you really are determined to follow me," Dave remarked, coming out of the mansion with a black bag. He was now properly dressed in a white shirt and black trousers, paired with black sneakers.
"You look good," Louis couldn’t help but compliment him, and Dave smiled.
"And you look... Never mind, it’s nothing a few bucks can’t take care of." Opening the car boot, he dropped the black bag in it, earning a surprised look from Louis.
"How did you do that?" Amazed, Louis asked.
"Do what?" Lost, Dave asked, wondering what he meant.
"That thing, opening it?" Not knowing what to call it, Louis pointed at the car boot and asked, emphasizing his question.
"Now, you wish to joke? Get in the car, we don’t have all day," Dave instructed, ignoring his question, assuming he was also toying with him.
"But..." Louis started, swallowing his words when he saw Dave moving to the other side of the car. How was he going to get inside this motionless thing?
Just as he was about to ask, he could no longer find Dave and grew worried. Where had Dave disappeared to? Did he also have some kind of magic?
"Come on, get in the car, looker," Dave emerged from the car, causing Louis to scream, which annoyed him. Why was the boy suddenly acting strangely?
"Did you just come out of this motionless thing?" Louis asked, covering his mouth to express shock.
"Motionless thing? This is my car, and it’s not motionless. I just have to start..." As if realizing something, Dave shut the driver’s seat door and walked up to Louis.
"You don’t know what a car is? You have never seen one before, right?" He asked, suspecting he might be right. That seemed to be the only explanation for Louis’s odd behavior, he didn’t know what a car was.
"Yes, that guard from earlier got annoyed and wouldn’t tell me anything about it," he responded, and Dave burst into laughter, causing Louis to frown. What was so amusing?
"What’s funny?" He asked.
"Geez, what kind of place were you cramped in? This is a car, one of human inventions designed for fast transportation. Imagine having to walk or use a portal like yours, that would be exhausting. So, they created this for easy use. There are more like it, and I can’t wait to see your reaction," Dave explained, clearing all of Louis’s confusion.
So that was what this was. Louis knew it was a human invention, those species were skilled at what they did. If only he was yet to know his origins, he would gladly leave for the human world. But he could be a threat to their species, for all he knows.
But he couldn’t agree with one thing. "My portal is fast it can take you to any place within seconds," he defended, proud of his power.
"Oops, I heard you had problems trying to teleport from a far distance. I guess it was just a rumor," Dave mocked, going to open the front car seat for him and nudging him to enter.
"That was different... it gets better when you know how to use it," he said, attempting to find the perfect explanation for his gateway skills.
"Sure, sure, now enter," still laughing, Dave repeated, and Louis complied, not knowing how else to convince him. Little did he know, he was the one about to be convinced.
Dave took his seat on the other side of the car and fastened his seatbelt. About to instruct Louis to do the same, he noticed Louis gazing at the car with a dazed look. Dave wondered how Louis would react to more inventions, it was bound to be entertaining.
"Stop gaping, you look like a dead fish." Leaning forward, Dave helped him fasten his seatbelt.
"Ouch, what is this? It’s uncomfortable," expressing displeasure, Louis asked and started tugging at the seatbelt, wanting to remove it but unsure how to.
"Bringing you along wasn’t a bad plan after all, my brother made a wise choice by letting you go," Dave remarked. Hearing that, Louis stiffened, realizing he hadn’t informed Damien about leaving with Dave.
Smiling awkwardly, Louis nodded at Dave’s words, unsure how to mention that he hadn’t seen Damien yet.
Dave had already left the dining room and was unaware of Damien leaving the mansion right after breakfast, so it would be fine for a while.
"This car is amazing," Louis noted, looking around the car, surprised to see something so incredible after seventeen years.
Dave looked at him, his eyes blank, as if contemplating something in his mind.
"Was life very bad there?" He asked, trying to sound as polite as possible. If he approached the question delicately, Louis might be more willing to respond.
"It was, worse than a prisoner’s, but I survived by killing my adoptive mother," he answered, looking down at his fingers.
As much as he despised that woman, he was a murderer, and nothing would change that. She deserved death, and he felt no regret, he was just afraid of becoming a monster afterward.
"You were brave," was the only thing Dave said before speeding away.
Back at the mansion, Aurora was starting to regret her decision to oversee the banquet arrangements because she was stuck with Theresa for another five hours. They kept selecting different fabrics for decoration but hadn’t been able to decide on one due to Theresa’s indecision.
Liliana, her cousin, was present, which only worsened matters. Liliana rejected all the fabrics, claiming they were too old for the event. Despite Aurora expressing her desire for a private banquet, Theresa continued to make it even more extravagant. Aurora decided to let Theresa do as she pleased, wanting to leave, but they wouldn’t let her go.
Knowing little about event planning, everything sounded new to Aurora, and her head began to ache. She acknowledged the difficulty of planning events, giving credit to those in the field. Planning an event based on the day’s program without any hitches was no easy task.
"White or red?"
"White."
"Burgundy would make sense, what do you think?"
"Yes, it would be perfect."
"Roses or sunflowers?"
"Sunflowers."
"I think hibiscus suits the theme."
"Yes, it would suit the theme."
And so, the lengthy list of selections continued until Aurora decided she couldn’t endure it any longer.
"I would love to take a rest now," she said, seeking an excuse to excuse herself.
"Oh yeah, today must have been exhausting. It’s almost 3 pm, you can go take a nap." Fortunately, Theresa agreed, and Aurora left without looking back to see if they needed her help.
Now, she would trust Scarlet’s words. What mattered was introducing herself, and Damien announcing his return. She could endure the flamboyant party.
Heading to her room, she was about to collapse onto the bed when she saw a letter waiting for her.
Frowning, she picked it up and read its contents, her frown deepening as she read.
The paper read:
"If you are not too tired to walk after setting things up with my mother, come to the phantom hills by 5 pm. I want to show you something, you won’t regret coming. A guard would bring you here upon my order. Don’t be late."
She was about to question the identity of the person who wrote the letter when she saw, "Yours Truly, Damien."
His handwriting was neat and fine, and she found herself tracing the lines of his words, marveling at their finesse. For someone who enjoyed teasing her, he was different when serious.
Exhausted and needing sleep, she decided to rest and not make the walk. She had already promised to make things difficult for him by acting like she didn’t want him.
If she were quick to accept whatever he wanted, she would never achieve her goal of leaving peacefully a month after the banquet.
Tossing the letter aside, she draped the blanket over herself and drifted off to sleep.
