Chapter 149: A car

"I didn’t want to intrude," he lied, facing away as if ready to leave unless Dave spoke.

"You have already interrupted my breakfast, isn’t it too late for that?" Dave questioned, sitting up.

Sighing, Louis turned towards him and took a seat, absentmindedly playing with his fingers.

After a moment of silence, he began, "I apologize for being rude. It wasn’t my intention," expressing regret for the dining room incident.

"Are you genuinely sorry?" Dave smirked, breaking into laughter, leaving Louis perplexed. Despite his apology, Dave didn’t seem to take him seriously.

"How else should I apologize?" Louis asked, confused.

"I never said anything about that," Dave replied, gazing at the stars.

"What do you want, then?" Louis inquired.

Dave just smiled and changed the subject, asking, "Do you drink alcohol?"

"No, it tastes bitter. I don’t like it," Louis answered, scrunching his face in distaste.

"I thought as much," Dave chuckled, unamused. He had asked about alcohol as he indulged in it at night when disturbed, and he wouldn’t mind some company.

His annoyance wasn’t directed at Louis for being rude but at the absence of his mate. It had been days since she left, promising to return, but he hadn’t received any messages, which altered his mood. He didn’t want to ask for help from Damien, and also didn’t want to take a rash decision by going to her pack, yet.

But he was worried that her brothers could be behind her absence. They were on good terms when she left, so there was no reason for her to ignore him. The only reasonable thought was her brothers denying her departure.

Louis sensed the frown on Dave’s face and asked, "You seem to have a lot on your mind."

"Who doesn’t? We just try to keep it in to avoid inconveniencing others," Dave replied, shrugging.

"True. Mind sharing? You don’t have to be completely open," Louis suggested, offering to help lighten Dave’s burden.

"I wish I could, but I bet you know anything about mates," Dave said, earning a surprised look from Louis.

While eavesdropping on Aurora and Scarlet’s conversation back at the white witches’ world, he had picked up some information about mates, though not in detail. From their discussions, it seemed to involve strength and power. If what they said was correct, he had a bit of knowledge.

"I know a little," he boasted.

"And how did you come about that?" Dave asked, intrigued, turning to face him.

"I overheard it, nothing too significant," Louis answered, avoiding eye contact to sidestep any suspicion.

"Well, if you insist. My mate and I have had a strenuous relationship, and I fear her brothers won’t acknowledge us," Dave shared his worries, an unusual comfort settling in as he confided in a teenager. He was starting to understand why his brother liked Louis, he wasn’t that bad.

"Then go talk to her brothers and express your true feelings," Louis suggested. If Dave genuinely valued his mate, there seemed no reason why he couldn’t confront her brothers.

"As I mentioned, it’s a strained relationship. They probably dislike me but won’t admit it," Dave conveyed, running his hands through his hair in frustration.

"How bad is it?" Louis inquired, wanting to understand the extent of his actions.

"She pursued me for years, maybe two, but I never acknowledged her. I broke her heart repeatedly, treated her poorly. Her brothers tried convincing her to move on, but she didn’t until I left five years ago. It would have been better if I hadn’t mistreated her while rejecting her, but I was worse, I made her feel bad about herself. I engaged with other women when she was around, fully aware that she would cry all night," he confessed, regretting his past actions. As he spoke, he realized the extent of his foolishness.

His heartbroken and foolish self refused to see the positive aspects, and he ruined things for himself by neglecting a miracle.

"I wouldn’t let her marry you if I were her brother," Louis remarked, looking at Dave with disbelief. While feelings couldn’t be forced, they could be respected. Dave didn’t have to hurt her or disregard her feelings, he could have calmly communicated and asked for space.

Even a man had his ego, but if she still wanted to marry him, then Dave was a real jerk. He didn’t deserve her and should suffer before winning her back. Louis felt an unexpected empathy for the woman despite not knowing her, vowing never to intentionally harm a woman. He would rather stay away and not give her false hope.

In addition, he notices Dave looked like a playboy, so he wasn’t surprised he did that to a woman. He was just surprised he acknowledged his mistakes, and was feeling bad about them.

"I know, I was a bastard," Dave admitted, acknowledging he deserved the consequences.

"Now you are a man for admitting your mistakes. Be a man and pursue your woman, we never know when we will leave this world, and some risks are worth taking. If you want to prove to her brothers that you deserve her, go after her and show them," Louis advised, sounding remarkably mature, prompting Dave to almost bow in submission. The boy appeared more intriguing than he seemed, though Dave hoped he wouldn’t pose a threat in the future.

"For someone young, you do have a lot of sense," Dave complimented, slipping in a teasing remark.

Louis shook his head, took a deep breath, and rested against the tree, enjoying the view and the added advantage of the breeze.

"Are you planning to stay here with us?" Dave asked after a few minutes of silence. He noticed how carefree Damien was around Louis, so he guessed Louis was staying here permanently.

"I haven’t experienced a peaceful day in seventeen years. I would love to have that here for a while before deciding on my next steps," Louis replied, closing his eyes to savor the breeze. His heartbeat was steady, and his features seemed burdened, Dave felt sympathy, but he quickly dismissed the emotion.

From Louis’s appearance, it was evident that he wasn’t someone reliant on others. Even if he were, Damien would ensure he stayed out of trouble here. There was no need for Dave to feel sorry for him, he was in a secure place.

"So, when do you leave?" Louis inquired, referring to Dave’s departure to find his mate.

"How about now?" Dave responded, climbing down from the tree.

"Just like that?!" Louis exclaimed, suddenly upright and surprised at the prospect of leaving so abruptly. While he did advise Dave to pursue his mate, he expected some preparation, not an immediate departure.

"Are you retracting your advice, huh?" Dave asked, chuckling at the boy’s naive expression.

"No, but I anticipated you would prepare something before leaving. Like gifts? Something werewolves appreciate?" Louis suggested, drawing from his knowledge of how dark witches often persuaded others. They would offer gifts, even if they weren’t as refined as those presented by regular people, it was as a persuasive gesture.

"Trust me, material things won’t sway them. I have to rely on a man’s instinct, as you advised," Dave explained. Alpha Nureo, unlike Damien, excelled in social matters, but gifts wouldn’t influence him. The bond with their sister was strong, and they wouldn’t trade her for a common gift or one they could manage to obtain.

"Can I come along?" Louis asked, leaving Dave momentarily speechless. Why did the boy want to accompany him to Alpha Nureo’s pack? Their relationship wasn’t close, and they might not get along. Moreover, someone might not approve of this, and Dave wouldn’t be able to contest it.

"I am afraid your brother wouldn’t allow that," Dave noted, shaking his head as if expressing regret.

"We could try asking," Louis suggested, eager to accompany Dave and learn more about werewolves. He wanted to explore various packs, in hope of the information he gathers proving friendly. Ultimately, he envisioned settling down in werewolf territory, preferably Damien’s.

"We could, but you will have to do that yourself. I need to pack my things. Good luck," Dave bid him farewell, heading back toward the mansion.

"All right," Louis replied, widening his eyes as he realized he didn’t know how to return to the mansion.

"Dave!" He called, but there was no response. He couldn’t afford to waste time searching for Damien, he wouldn’t be back in time to follow Dave. If he was correct, Damien had likely left the mansion after breakfast. Louis descended from the tree, fortunately finding his way back to the entrance.

As he approached, he noticed a shiny red object being cleaned by a man who seemed large enough to be a guard. Curious, he approached and asked, "What’s this?"

The guard, perplexed, looked Louis over, even more confused when he realized the boy appeared young enough to not know what a car was.

"It’s a car," he replied, not willing to entertain a teenager who might be teasing him.
