Alpha Damien's Breeder: The first night -
Chapter 145: Defending a rogue
Chapter 145: Defending a rogue
That appeared to be a reasonable suggestion, but it fell short of convincing her.
"How do I care for someone who doesn’t seem to require it? He only seems willing to open up to you, maintaining a distance from the rest of us," she inquired, a disapproving expression on her face.
"We all need time. Just as I am giving you a month to decide, give him a chance," he suggested, and her dissatisfaction was evident.
"This is different," she argued.
"How?" He inquired.
"He knows what he wants, he’s determined. I..." she paused, realizing what she was about to reveal. No, Aurora, you shouldn’t let him know that, he might get the wrong idea.
"You don’t know what you want, you are doubtful," he finished her thought, and a hush fell over the room.
Their eyes locked, and neither made a move to break the gaze, unspoken words communicating between them. He understood her vulnerabilities so well, she was completely exposed to him.
Damien was considerate of her fears, which explained his leniency. If he succumbed to his primal instincts, she would already be mated to him. If only she knew how hard he was resisting her, and encountering her every day only intensified the struggle.
Just a glance at her was enough to tempt him to cradle her in his arms. A glimpse of her lips was sufficient to compel him to bring her into his room.
"I don’t know," she finally admitted, breaking the eye contact first.
"Aurora, there’s a reason for everything," he said, leaving it at that, though it seemed like he wanted to say more.
"I will take care of him," she reluctantly agreed.
"Is there anything else you are against?" He showed her the things he had already typed on the computer and asked.
"No, except for the arrangement of my freedom," she pointed out, and he nodded in acknowledgment.
"What do you want after gaining your freedom?" He inquired.
"I heard there’s a book that honors past maids in the mansion. I want my name omitted from it, I don’t want to be remembered in this pack once I leave. And grant Elyon freedom," she requested.
"Elyon? The rogue?" His displeasure was apparent when he mentioned the rogue. Why was she defending someone who had nearly caused her demise by falsely professing about her?
"Yes, he’s as innocent as I am. He was coerced and tortured, and he’s also succumbing to the effects of the crazy drop potion. He needs to be free to seek help from neighboring packs," she explained, defending him. Fortunately, the house arrest hadn’t revealed his threat to the pack, but she wasn’t sure how long that would last.
She learned that he had been threatened with a deadly potion that could drive a werewolf wild, leading to death as the only solution. Unfortunately, he took the antidote too late, and until a few days ago, he had managed to avoid going berserk.
"I don’t care," he declared, turning his gaze away from her, his expression turning alarming as anger clenched his jaw. The idea of releasing a criminal seemed to enrage him. If he delayed any longer in this discussion, he might lose her because of his stance.
"Damien!" She exclaimed, attempting to capture his attention.
"I said no!" He roared, causing her to flinch, but she refused to show her fear. If she wanted to point out her choice in this matter, she needed to stand firm against him, no matter how intimidating he appeared.
"And I am insisting," she retorted, both of them locking eyes with cold determination.
"You really want to go against me because of a rogue? Why do you want to save him?" He questioned.
"I have already said it, he’s not guilty. He’s just misunderstood," she replied.
"Misunderstood? If I had been a minute late, you would have been gone. And you know what? I would have snapped his head in two," he declared, trying to intimidate her into silence. However, she remained stubborn, challenging him without yielding.
"That’s not his fault. Blame those who threatened him," she insisted.
"I already removed him from the prison. Is that not enough?" He asked, frustration evident on his face. Tensions escalated between them, and despite his desire to calm the situation, he found himself irritated by her defence about the rogue.
"It’s not. We don’t have to punish the innocent." As she reflected on the situation, she wondered if the man who claimed to have been with her five years ago had been threatened too.
"This is starting to make no sense. Unless what he said was true, are you perhaps in love..." His words were cut off by a resounding slap across his face.
He deserved the slap, acknowledging it, but his possessiveness had clouded his judgment.
"I am sorry," he said, gazing into her disappointed eyes and sighing.
"Why do you always assume on your own?" She asked, staring at him with disbelief. How could he think so little of her?
"Aurora, I..."
"If you also believe in his words, how are you different from them?" She questioned, tears streaming down her face.
"I didn’t mean it that way. Hear me out," he pleaded, but she shook her head and started hitting his chest, crying in the process. She despised that he gave more credence to Elyon’s words than to anything she said. If it were someone else, she wouldn’t care, but she couldn’t bear the thought of Damien believing the accusing words about her.
Instinctively, Damien embraced her, holding her tightly when she tried to pull away.
Kissing her hair, he loosened his grip and traced soothing lines along her back. He regretted his words, he had messed up, and he knew it.
"I hate you," her words were muffled against his chest due to how tightly he held her.
"I know," he whispered, continuing to pat her back. Eventually, Aurora fell silent, her breathing calming in his embrace, exhausted from crying.
"Should I take you back to your room?" He asked when she showed no signs of moving or speaking.
"Stay like this, just for a while," she pleaded, leaning more into his embrace. The comfort of hugging him was undeniable, and she wasn’t ready to let go just yet.
Damien nodded and allowed her to stay in his arms, finding joy in holding her. When she drifted off to sleep, he carefully lifted her and placed her on his bed, covering her with a duvet before returning to his desk to finalize the contract.
After typing and editing the contract, he printed it out and placed it on his desk, stealing glances at Aurora. He sensed her discomfort, realizing it might be due to what she was wearing. How was he going to address the issue of lessening her clothes without risking a scolding the next morning?
Deciding to deal with her protests later, he approached the bed and sat beside her, gently tucking a loose strand of her hair behind her ear.
Scooting closer, he lifted her gently, allowing her to fall into his arms. He breathed a sigh of relief when she didn’t wake up, noting that she wasn’t a light sleeper and required a significant disturbance to rouse her.
Unzipping her gown from behind, he carefully removed her hands from the garment before taking off the entire gown. Only Selena knew how challenging it was for him to undress her without waking her up. He blushed as he saw her bra, realizing this wasn’t going to make things easier for him.
Deciding to unhook the bra once he was beneath the sheets, he took off his shirt and crawled into bed, pulling her close.
"Silly, don’t blame me too much," he whispered as he finally unhooked her bra, covering them both with the sheets. He felt her stir, fearing he had woken her up, but soon realized she was mumbling something in her sleep.
"I hope it’s about me," he said before drifting off to sleep as well.
The following morning, Damien was already awake while Aurora continued to sleep. He decided to attend to some matters before she woke up, calling Enoch and handing over the printed contract to finalize the remaining details and bring it for stamping and signing.
"I thought you changed your mind?" Enoch teased, smirking.
"Yes, I did. That’s why there’s a new contract to finalize," Damien replied. Enoch shook his head, understanding it was useless to argue with him.
"When do you need this?" Enoch inquired.
"After breakfast," Damien answered. Enoch nodded and turned to leave but couldn’t resist asking, "Are you really planning to introduce her at the banquet?"
"It’s a ceremony to announce my return and introduce my Luna," Damien stated proudly.
"Then we should tighten our security. Have you told Theresa?" Enoch asked, and Damien frowned.
He hadn’t spoken to her since his return, but he noticed she became gentler and more reserved. Whatever transition she underwent before their return, it seemed positive.
"She helped Dave a lot during our absence. A month of torture is enough. You should talk to her," Enoch advised before leaving Damien’s room.
Damien knew he couldn’t avoid Theresa forever, but he needed to convince himself that he was still angry with her, even when he wasn’t. It was time to set things right.
