Alpha Damien's Breeder: The first night -
Chapter 141: Stirring
Chapter 141: Stirring
However, Damien listens to the principle of not mixing work with pleasure, forcing himself to endure her presence daily. Evelyn, on the other hand, remained silent, her countenance laced with the weight of contemplation.
"I concur, I would welcome the alleviation of my burdens," she expressed without offense, admitting her weariness of the rugged life she had chosen.
Initially drawn to the path of a warrior, believing it would afford her the ability to safeguard her loved ones, she found herself never having to protect anyone as danger never materialized.
Her decision to break Dave’s heart stemmed from the misguided belief that he would be a distraction and a hindrance. Her assumptions were proven wrong, and the price for her errors cost her a lot. The sacrifices she made to become who she was now, losing loved ones along the way, left her questioning what she had gained in return.
Living a life as she dreamt, she had to deal with being depressed, and was never truly happy. Despite feeling it was too late to rectify her mistakes, she embraced the belief that starting afresh was never too late.
"Are you certain?" Damien inquired.
"Yes, Alpha. With all due respect, I would like to resign. I have made numerous wrong decisions, and I want to begin anew," she stated, surprising Dave, who had longed for the day she would acknowledge her missteps.
However, there was no joy in hearing it now, he merely pitied her and refrained from mocking her. Shaking his head, he averted his gaze, unwilling to feel sympathy for her once again. Her mistakes had ruined them both.
"Agreed. I consent to your resignation, but only after a replacement is found," Damien declared, prompting a gentle smile from her.
"I will remain the leader until a successor is found. Thank you for this opportunity," she expressed.
"Moving on, I couldn’t hold my banquet due to unforeseen incidents. I want a banquet prepared in a week, and invitations must be sent to every pack in the country," Damien ordered.
"Every pack? Isn’t that risky? Edward is rumored to be dead, and Cain is now the Alpha in the Dark Shadow’s pack. You barely know anything about him, and he was behind Edward’s attack against us. Do you still want to invite him?" Enoch interjected, cautioning against the plan, as many alphas harbored hatred towards Damien for various reasons. Some were absurd, while some were justifiable.
"As you said, he barely knows me. Perhaps he sent Edward to me to reduce the guilt for wanting to kill his brother," Damien reasoned, acknowledging the doubts but finding it sensible.
While Alpha Cain had recently returned to claim the throne after their father’s death, they held no existing enmity. If it was indeed a trap for Edward, Cain could be considered an ally, at least for the time being.
"We can’t fully trust them, but I will send out the invitations," Enoch decided, deciding to confront Damien about the issue later.
"Good. How is the pack house construction progressing?" Damien inquired, directing his attention to the Elder overseeing the construction. Fortunately, not all Elders were involved in the rebellion, with individuals like Williams, Evelyn, and the current Architect remaining loyal.
It was mostly the younger ones that weren’t involved, the Elderly were the bad fruits among them.
"Thanks to Dave, we are left with the interior, fixing the furniture and equipment." The Elder relayed. Dave felt proud from hearing that and smiled in satisfaction, promising to grant that Elder one wish later.
"It’s nothing, I am just too good." He said, boasting off that almost made Enoch roll his eyes at his pettiness. Theresa would perfectly supervise the construction without a mistake. What was so great about what he did?
"I know your Beta is jealous but if he can pay, I will teach him leadership skills." Raising his brow playfully at Enoch, he taunted, enjoying Enoch’s misery.
"No, but thanks." Enoch politely rejected, earning snorts from some of the elders. Feeling disrespected, Dave raised his hand, about to start bantering when Damien cut in, "Let’s check it out tomorrow morning, I don’t trust his work." Ruining Dave’s dignity completely.
Dave’s heart ached and he fell to his chair defeatedly.
"I sacrificed nights just to get the work done, I am so heartbroken." Acting dramatic, he said.
"Concerning the banquet, I would be introducing my Luna...."
"Oh right in time," Aurora came in, two more maids at her back with snacks. Damien was interrupted as her scent invaded his senses, distracting him.
Aurora just happened to enter when he was about to talk about her. She always seemed to provoke the calm storm in him, just when he had managed to control it.
He couldn’t even get angry at her for denying to be mates, because of the mother fucking bond.
He watched as she skillfully served the Elders tea, her slender hand, pouring in the tea gracefully. Some of the men would smile at her when she served them tea, in which she smiled in return, that irked him. What was she doing, flirting around?
And what was with the shades? Was she experiencing a wardrobe disorder? Who wore shades under a roof?
"Sister-in-law, what’s the special occasion?" Dave, who couldn’t ignore things, asked.
"Occasion?" Knowing he was referring to her, Aurora halted her hand in what she was doing and repeated, not understanding what he meant.
"The glasses," he said, pointing towards it.
"Ohh, I was slicing onions with it and forgot to take it off," she lied, rushing to serve everyone tea before her lie was blown.
She was done serving everyone tea and it was left with Damien. Taking a deep breath, she went to stand beside him and started serving him tea, making sure to avoid eye contact at all cost. While she served, she felt his stare on her and it made her uncomfortable, causing her hands to shake and spill the tea on his shirt.
"Oh my gosh! I am so sorry," she apologized, picking up a tissue to wipe off the stain.
While she did that, she was unaware of the hand that was coming for the glasses on her face.
She stilled when she felt his grip on the glasses, finding it hard to move. Slowly, he removed the glasses and she accidentally looked up to meet his gaze, burping at the sudden contact.
Damien’s grip tightened on the shades and he looked at her blankly, making it difficult for Aurora to fathom his thoughts. Was he angry? She didn’t know, she just wished to flee from this room.
"Brother, let the poor girl breathe," Dave said and Aurora took that as an opportunity, fleeing in that instant.
She ran back to her room and shut it after her, falling to the floor to sob, again.
She should have moved away, why did she stay and look at him? Hitting her forehead, she scolded herself for being so foolish and went to lie on the bed.
Moments later, someone entered her room, walking slowly to the bed with some items in his hand. It was Damien, his gaze was expressionless and his thoughts couldn’t be read. Aurora was already fast asleep on the bed, so he felt a little bit relieved.
Sitting beside her on the bed, he took her hand in his and just stared at her, wondering what he was going to do with her. She was capable of breaking and fixing him. He couldn’t even see himself getting angry at her earlier, he just wanted to know why she didn’t want him, no, he wanted to understand but he couldn’t.
How much pain had she experienced from her former mate, that she was boldly denying him? He was suddenly curious about her former mate and wanted to know the type of man he was.
If truly Aurora wasn’t in the wrong, he was going to make that bastard pay for what he did to her. But first, he needed to make her fall in love with him, before he could take any steps.
Picking up the towel in the tray, he loomed over her and started cleaning off stains on her swollen eyes. She would flinch while he did it but she didn’t wake up, and he almost pinched her for being so unaware. What if it was someone that wanted to hurt her?
The more he got to know her, the more he wanted to protect her. The mate bond wasn’t helping either, as every one of his thoughts centered around her.
After using the towel, he dropped it and picked up a small container filled with ointment. He picked up some with his pinky finger, and moved his hands to apply it on the swollen area.
"Mmm," stirring in her sleep, Aurora moaned, feeling ticklish from the movement of his hand on her eyes. The moan ignited a desire in Damien, and he imagined how she would moan if he was inside of her.
Just in time, Aurora opened her eyes and got her tongue stuck in her mouth when she met with Damien’s gaze. "Stop stirring," he said.
