Chapter 119: Dave’s proposal
Dave pulled over at the side of the road, hoping to soothe Charlotte’s nerves before they entered the pack territory. Charlotte stepped out of the car and walked away, kneeling down as tears welled up in her eyes.
Exiting the vehicle, Dave stared at her, guiding himself to the other side of the car, as he leaned against it for support. As he observed her, a myriad of thoughts swirled in his mind regarding the prospect of being her mate. Could he truly be the partner she needed?
Recalling a painful past, Dave had once fallen deeply for a girl during their high school years, only to be heartbroken without any apparent reason. The experience left him wounded and determined to never allow himself to love again. This emotional baggage translated into his mistreatment of Charlotte, neglecting her needs and feelings without remorse.
During the rainy and hot season, he would drive past her without stopping, indifferent to her well-being. When she was ill or hungry, he callously ignored her, a behavior fueled by his past heartbreak. Despite being worse than the devil in his actions, Dave was now committed to rectifying his mistakes, driven by a genuine desire to be the man Charlotte deserved.
Charlotte had faced cruelty from men, including Dave himself, which only added to her tears. If he had not been consumed by his own sorrow, he might have recognized the blessing Selena had bestowed upon him in the form of Charlotte. Regretful of chasing her away, Dave sighed deeply.
With the turns of things, Goddess Selena probably wanted him to learn the hard way, that was why he couldn’t embrace the blessing bestowed upon him.
Opening the trunk of his car, he retrieved a mat and approached Charlotte, placing it beside her on the ground.
"I want to be alone," she whispered, yearning for solitude in the midst of her unfortunate circumstances.
"I can’t," Dave admitted, settling on the mat and quietly observing her.
"Do I look pathetic?" She asked after a moment, wiping away her tears.
"You look tempting," he confessed, unable to resist the allure of her red, tear-streaked face. Her lips looked so enticing that he couldn’t stop himself from gazing at it, with the intent to feast on it. Despite her distress, she still captivated him.
"What?" Charlotte questioned in disbelief, her mood lifting slightly. Dave, feeling embarrassed at being caught staring, suggested she sit on the mat due to the cold ground.
"I...I..mean, sit on the mat, it’s cold." He stammered, embarrassed to have been caught ogling at her. Tugging at her hand, he moved her closer to the mat and she sat on it.
Chuckling, Charlotte complied, feeling a sense of relief in Dave’s presence.
"So, what do you want to do next?" He inquired.
"Sleep? Eat? I don’t know. I just want to be at peace," she replied, still grappling with the loss of her potential husband and lacking the energy to decide on her next move.
"Then let’s just stay here until you are ready to leave. I can order something," Dave suggested, taking out his phone to arrange for food. He couldn’t hide his happiness at the prospect of spending more time with his mate, hoping that things would work out between them.
"As for the mate thing, what are your thoughts?" He asked, bracing himself for her response.
"It was so sudden that I was still processing how we could be mates. I chased after you for years, but the bond never showed. Why is it coming now?" She truthfully replied. The revelation had caught her off guard, leaving her speechless before Ronald and Piper showed up.
She was prepared to accept rejection if he didn’t want to be mates. She had decided to stop searching for love and focus on her future ambition of opening a bar. Although she expectd her brother to be against her idea, eventually they would understand her choice. Not everyone was destined for love, and she had come to terms with that reality.
"So, what do you plan on doing?" Dave asked, hinting at something more. Charlotte sensed he had something on his mind but was hesitant to express it.
"I am not going to burden you. I’ll be opening my bar soon. I am good at moving on, and I’ll be fine," she assured, thinking he was referring to her decision.
"Oh, right," Dave responded.
"Dave, I am no longer that girl infatuated with you. You have nothing to worry about, I am fine with being rejected," she reassured, offering a half-hearted smile.
Dave was taken aback. Why was she talking about rejection? He had no intention of rejecting her, in fact, he was determined to keep her by his side. He couldn’t fathom why she would suggest he reject her. The thought of losing her was unbearable, and the emptiness would consume him over time. Even if it took time for his wolf to feel his mate absence, he would be killed slowly.
Reflecting on it, he realized his fear of falling in love stemmed from the trauma of past heartbreaks. It wasn’t about seeking revenge or harboring anger, he, too, was afraid of being left alone. The pain of falling in love with someone that doesn’t love you is devastating. He pursued his ex-lover, and ended being dumped because he was the only one in love.
Before he could clarify his feelings, their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of a delivery person.
"That was fast," Charlotte remarked, impressed by the prompt food delivery after Dave had just placed the order. Humans, she mused, were adept at whatever they set their minds to, driven by determination. If only they were less ambitious and greedy, the supernatural wouldn’t have to conceal their existence for fear of betrayal.
"Ermm, Mr. Dave?" The delivery guy approached, seeking confirmation that he was delivering to the right person.
"Yes," Dave replied, reaching out to receive the food.
"Enjoy your meal," the delivery guy wished them before departing.
Dave had ordered a burger and cola, breaking the seal to serve them.
"Wow, I am rarely allowed to feast on junk food," she exclaimed, expressing her excitement at the prospect of eating a burger. Her brothers, being strict enforcers of rules, had limited her intake of such treats to prevent any harm.
"I could get them for you every day," Dave offered, causing Charlotte’s eyes to widen. Every day? Did that mean he wanted to spend every day with her? She quickly dismissed the thought, assuming he probably didn’t mean it that way. It would be better if she removed any idea of being together with Dave, before she got hurt again.
"I would love to take you up on that offer," she replied, smiling sweetly.
"Charlotte, don’t you want to be my mate?" he suddenly asked, catching her off guard, making her choke on what she was eating. What on earth was he saying?
"Hey, be careful there," he said, offering her bottled water, his concern evident. Was he being too forward?
"Thanks," she said after taking a sip of water.
"So, about what I asked?" He repeated his question.
"I want to be your mate, Dave. All my life, I wished you were my mate. I do, but I don’t want to be with a man who won’t love me. I am tired of being a side chick for..." Before she could finish her sentence, Dave interrupted by placing his hand on the back of her neck, drawing her closer, and capturing her lips in a passionate kiss.
The kiss started slowly, gradually intensifying until they were both lost in the heat of the moment, tightening their hold around each other. Dave kissed her gently, capturing her lower lip and eliciting a moan from her. Her lips parted, and he took the opportunity to deepen the kiss, exploring the depths of passion.
Charlotte dropped her hands on his waist, inviting Dave closer to her body. Taking that as cue, he wrapped his other hand around her waist and drew them closer, making their chest come in contact.
"Dave," she moaned softly when he nibbled on her lips, eliciting a hidden desire in her. Dave nibbed, sucked and played with her lips until he finally dived in again, french-kissing her aggressively.
Gently laying her down, Dave positioned himself on top of her, their lips still engaged in the kiss as his hands roamed around her body. Her reaction caused her to shiver, breaking their lip-lock.
"I am sorry, I have never been touched there," she confessed, her face turning as red as a tomato. Her innocence intrigued Dave even more. The realization that she was a complete virgin filled his wolf with joy.
Mate! His wolf snarled, threatening to break free from his restraints. However, he restrained himself, knowing he couldn’t mark her until they were properly married.
"Charlotte, let’s get married. I want to be with you forever," he proposed.
