Chapter 118: Ronald was married
Entering the cinema, Dave purchased popcorn and drinks for both of them before they entered the theater room. Choosing seats not far from the screen, they settled in and awaited the commencement of the movie. Charlotte found it weird that they arrived just as the film was about to start.
"How did you know to book this movie?" Unable to contain her curiosity, she inquired.
"I booked it while you were asleep," he replied, to which she nodded in response.
"The film has started," she informed, and the theater hushed.
They were watching a romantic movie titled "Friends with Benefits," centered around two best friends discovering their love for each other. To preserve their friendship, they decided to sign a friends-with-benefits contract to avoid intruding on each other’s privacy.
Initially, the movie was humorous, and the atmosphere was amicable until it reached explicit scenes that made Charlotte uncomfortable. Unsure how to react, she found herself watching such a film with a man who wasn’t her fiancé.
Dave, too, felt an unexpected heat throughout his body. Despite his experience with many women and familiarity with kisses and intimacy, the situation felt awkward. Was it because of Charlotte? Turning his head toward her, he intended to gauge her reaction, but their eyes met.
Dave swallowed hard, eyes widening at the coincidence. Charlotte’s face flushed red, and she felt stifled.
A moaning sound startled them, and Dave started fanning himself. He had chosen the movie assuming it was tagged as "Comedy" and "Romantic." What was with the sudden explicit scenes?
"Should we leave?" He asked, and though she nodded, not wanting to reveal her discomfort, she insisted, "I am fine," offering a forced smile before returning her gaze to the movie, an action she immediately regretted as the characters became more intimate.
Dave noticed a loose strand of hair on Charlotte’s face and moved to help her tuck it behind her ear. The moment his hand touched her, a spark surged through him, causing him to withdraw.
"Are you okay?" She asked, worried, reaching for his hand to check, only to feel the spark. She quickly withdrew her hand, her heart pounding from the unexpected sensation.
MATE! Dave’s wolf snarled, and he rushed out of the theater room.
"Dave!" Charlotte called after him, but he was already gone. She sat in her chair, lost in thought.
Too noisy!
Keep it low Cinderella!
Annoyed audiences yelled at her.
Dave was her mate! Everything was unfolding too quickly, and she struggled to catch her breath. The man she pursued was her mate, the one who never reciprocated her love?
She had stopped believing in the whole mate concept after not finding hers at 16. Around that time, she met Dave and chose not to wait for love but to pursue it.
How was she going to tell her fiancé and brothers that Dave was her mate? Why did Selena choose to reveal her mate just when she had moved on? They could reject each other since Dave might not truly love her, but the pain of parting with a destined mate was the most excruciating experience.
She could suffer from loneliness if lingering feelings remained. Moreover, a mate was one’s complete half, and she would feel incomplete without him.
Overwhelmed, she began to cry, unaware when everyone else left the theater room.
"Miss, we are about to close the theater room, could you kindly exit?" A young man tapped on her shoulders as he conveyed the information.
"Oh, sure," wiping away her tears, she stood up and left. She searched around the cinema for Dave but couldn’t find him. Approaching the park, she noticed his car was still there, indicating he was either still around or had left her all alone.
Sitting on the bonnet of his car, she decided to wait for him. As she thought and sighed, she attempted to call him several times, but he didn’t pick up.
Deciding to find her way back to the mansion as it was already getting late, she got down from the bonnet of the car and began making her way to the street to hail a cab.
While heading towards the street, she paused when she saw a familiar figure. Kissing a woman on her lips was none other than her fiancé, Ronald.
Perhaps her tears had blinded her vision, making her see things, or why else would her fiancé be here when he was supposed to be out of the country taking care of his brother?
Approaching them, she tapped on the man’s shoulder, capturing his attention.
"Charlotte?!" It was evident that Ronald was shocked and wasn’t expecting to see her, just as she wasn’t expecting this encounter. Charlotte’s mind went into chaos, struggling to comprehend what was happening.
"Do you know me?" She asked, finding it hard to believe what she was witnessing. Averting her gaze, she looked at the woman Ronald was kissing, and her legs grew numb.
"Piper!" Charlotte exclaimed and went falling to the ground but was caught safely in the arms of someone. Looking up, she met Dave’s rough-looking face, his hair disheveled, and his breath ragged like he had just run a race.
She balanced herself and yanked her body away from Dave, angry at him for leaving her alone like that.
"I..." Dave started, but Ronald interrupted him.
"Charlotte, I have an explanation. I should have told you sooner about us, but I was afraid of hurting you," he began, not bothering to lie.
"Why?" she asked, taking Ronald aback.
Why? What did she mean by why? Was she feigning calmness or was she really cool?
That was all she wanted to know, she didn’t scream or beg him not to leave her.
"Why?" He repeated.
"Yes, why," she answered.
"I needed your pack to aid mine back then, and I had no choice but to use you to get that. Piper and I have been married for seven years now, it was part of our plan for her to befriend you," he started giving explanations, clearing all the confusion in her mind.
No wonder Ronald always seemed to criticize Piper in front of her, it was to avoid raising suspicions. And she had to admit, they played their game well.
"Your brother was never injured?" She asked.
"Yes, they wanted me to finally come back home. I was planning to stage my death after a while," he confessed. Charlotte just nodded her head and rubbed her forehead in frustration at the web of lies.
"Let me guess, Piper, your mother was never bedridden?" Directing her attention to Ronald’s wife, she asked.
"I am sorry, we did what we had to do to revive our pack," Piper answered.
From what they were saying, Charlotte was starting to doubt their real names were Piper and Ronald.
"What are your real names?" She asked, making them widen their eyes in surprise. How did she figure that out?
"Charlotte, you can blame me for everything, but don’t touch Piper. I am the only hope for our pack and the future baby in her stomach. Do anything you want to me, but let Piper go back to our pack safely," kneeling, he started pleading.
"Four years were for nothing," she mumbled to herself.
Dave just stood still, unsure of what to do to calm her down. He was ready to punch Ronald if he made any wrong move, but things were fine at the moment.
"I want to go home Dave," she suddenly blurted, and went to stand beside him.
"Charlotte!" Ronald called. If he left without saying anything, then he was doomed. Her biggest brother, Alpha Nureo was powerful enough to ruin their pack despite having regained their strength. They were good enough to survive, but it would still take time to restore absolute power, he couldn’t risk angering them.
"Ronald, I am happy for you and Piper, and I don’t care about ruining your pack. You can leave the country without worrying, I have a mate now. Congratulations to your unborn baby," forcefully, she spat those words and smiled at them.
Tugging at Dave’s hand, he took that as a clue and led them away, towards his car.
"Will she be fine?" Piper asked, worried about Charlotte who she grew to like over the years. To be honest, Charlotte was a sweet type and she would make a fine wife. She had been hurt multiple times, and she deserved to be happy. It was just that, their pack life depended on her and they had no choice.
"She’s stronger than we think," Ronald said and sighed, feeling bad for what they did to her. If he wasn’t already married, he would have married her, because she brought happiness to people’s lives. That was why they made the rule to not affect her life intimately, so he made sure not to have sex with her during their days as couples.
"I promise to repay this debt back to Charlotte," Ronald whispered and helped Piper into the car, then they drove off.
