Alpha Damien's Breeder: The first night -
Chapter 106: Telling Enoch lies
Chapter 106: Telling Enoch lies
"Yes, I thought of the idea of visiting you to help locate Aurora," she remarked.
"This is a significant matter. Are you certain she’s not somewhere within the mansion?" Theresa inquired, rising from the couch.
"No, she isn’t. Aurora doesn’t usually hide or cause others to worry. It’s been days, and I am starting to suspect that something’s amiss," Scarlet said with a tone that suggested she might know more than she was letting on.
"What do you know?" Theresa asked, retaking her seat, her eyes fixed on Scarlet’s, as if urging her to reveal the truth.
"I overheard the maids talking about catching a thief in the mansion. Their description made me think of Aurora. Theresa, who was the thief they caught?" Scarlet inquired, her expression serious, putting Theresa on the spot.
"It was just one of the maids... What was her name again? Don’t worry, it’s not Aurora," Theresa replied, though it was a lie. She silently prayed for forgiveness, convinced that lying was justified in this situation. She felt a pang of self-disgust for being untruthful.
"Good, but I am still concerned," Scarlet believed the lie, fortunately. Theresa wasn’t sure if she could have continued the deception if Scarlet had seen through it. And where was her maid? They needed to act quickly to help Aurora.
"How about this? You ask around the pack if anyone has seen Aurora, and I will have some guards investigate the mansion. Together, we will find her in time," Theresa suggested, her heart racing.
"Alright, I will do as you say," Scarlet agreed as she prepared to take action. Then, something crossed her mind, and she turned back to Theresa.
"Actually, Aurora had been planning to escape from the mansion to return to her pack for revenge. I am not entirely sure, but she might have taken advantage of the Alpha’s absence to flee," she disclosed, even though she wasn’t supposed to reveal this secret.
"Revenge? Why? When did she start planning this?" Theresa’s curiosity was piqued, and her body tensed. Aurora was planning revenge, but what had driven her to this extreme? What terrible experiences had she gone through to make her contemplate revenge?
Sighing, Scarlet decided that keeping secrets wouldn’t help at this point. "Her parents were killed by her mate on her wedding day. She was accused of infidelity, tortured by her mate, and sold as a slave," she revealed, leaving Theresa wide-eyed in horror. She had endured all of that?
Theresa couldn’t fathom why her mate would do such a thing. While she was aware of mates betraying each other, she never expected it to be this severe. Weren’t mates supposed to strengthen their bond? They were mated, shouldn’t their connection have been unbreakable?
"Oh my, why did you keep this from me?" Theresa demanded, her anger evident.
"She was afraid that we would talk her out of it. She was even willing to die after seeking her revenge," Scarlet defended her actions.
While the reason was understandable, it wasn’t enough to justify withholding such information. After living with them for five years, she had come to see them as family and didn’t expect them to keep something so significant from her.
Aurora had suffered so much, and now, she was enduring the same pain all over again. Was this too much for a vulnerable she-wolf to bear?
"That’s not a valid excuse. Though I don’t support seeking revenge, knowing what was wrong could have helped with therapy sessions," Theresa concluded, finally understanding the reasons behind Aurora’s behavior. She had mentioned being betrayed by her mate, but she had no idea it was this horrific. The memory of her past had prevented her from being intimate with Damien, and it broke Theresa’s heart to think about how much Aurora had endured. How had she endured it all on her own?
"I wanted to tell you, but I wasn’t sure if it was the right choice," Scarlet began to regret her promise to keep Aurora’s secret. If she had told Theresa all of this, perhaps Aurora could have moved on and even become pregnant with Damien’s child.
Damien might be a jerk, but the idea of her friend bearing his child, who could potentially be a more compassionate Alpha than his father, seemed promising.
"I am torn right now. Did she mention his desire to annul their contract to you?" Theresa inquired, noticing that Scarlet seemed as uninformed as she was. Why was Aurora keeping so many things hidden? At least, she had a best friend with whom she could share her burdens.
"Annul?!" Scarlet exclaimed, taken aback by the revelation. Aurora had never mentioned this to her, and she was puzzled by the unfolding situation.
"I only found out about it five days ago, the same day she disappeared. I thought you two were close enough to confide in each other," Theresa added, bewildered by the complexity of the situation.
"If that’s what happened, could that be the reason she’s missing? Could Aurora have..." Theresa cut her off, "Do not say such words. Aurora would never do something so degrading." Warning her not to utter such words, suspecting that Scarlet was contemplating the possibility of Aurora taking drastic measures.
"But there’s a possibility. You know Alpha Damien is insensitive and could have pushed her to such extremes," Scarlet considered, despite Theresa’s warnings. She knew Aurora well and believed that she might be emotionally fragile, despite her strong exterior. She might look strong and capable, but she was weak in the heart and emotional.
"No, let’s not jump to conclusions. For now, ask around the pack for her, and I will have my detectives look into it," Theresa redirected the conversation, and Scarlet nodded in response.
After a brief moment of hesitation, Scarlet left Theresa’s room to search for Aurora within the pack.
Just as Scarlet left, Theresa’s handmaiden rushed into the room, her face radiating excitement as she moved closer. Theresa’s hopes were raised as she saw the maid’s joyful expression, indicating that she had discovered something that could be useful.
"I found something!" the handmaiden exclaimed, breathless from her haste.
"Tell me, how can we help Aurora?" Theresa asked impatiently.
"Apparently, a maid witnessed Sarah finding Aurora searching through Dave’s room," the maid began.
"So she was really in Dave’s room?" Theresa was surprised, wondering if Aurora had sought Dave’s help after her request to Damien was denied by him.
It was all starting to make sense. Aurora had searched Dave’s room for assistance but hadn’t found him there.
"Then what happened?" Theresa inquired, piecing the facts together.
"Although she was indeed searching through his room, it appeared as though she was looking for something specific rather than stealing. The maid also mentioned that Sarah didn’t give Aurora a chance to explain herself and immediately accused her of theft," the maid continued, shedding light on the whole situation.
So that was the truth of it? To call it a misunderstanding would be an understatement. If Elder Timotei knew about this, why was he not investigating properly and blindly believing Sarah’s words? Theresa needed to speak to him. "Prepare a cloak for me, I need to see Elder Timotei," she instructed.
After donning some clothes, Theresa was about to leave her room when she received a call from Enoch on her phone.
"I suggest you don’t answer that," her handmaiden panicked, considering the potential consequences of lying to the Beta if he inquired about the situation in the mansion.
"That would only make things more suspicious. It wouldn’t be good if he called one of the guards in the mansion, they might reveal everything," Theresa considered Enoch’s likely course of action and decided to answer the call.
"Enoch, what a pleasant surprise!" She exclaimed, scolding herself for sounding so strange.
"What’s surprising about calling you?" Enoch found her comment odd. She was the mistress of the house, responsible for updating them on the mansion’s status. This wasn’t the first time he had called her, so why was it surprising?
"You know, I wasn’t expecting your call so soon," she continued to ramble, making him more suspicious.
"Is Aurora still in the mansion? Is everything okay?" Ignoring Theresa’s odd remarks, he inquired. Theresa’s heart raced, fearing that they had already discovered the situation.
"Of course, she’s fine, and everything is in order. Why are you suddenly asking?" she questioned.
"Well, the Alpha took your son’s words to heart and wanted to verify Aurora’s well-being," he replied.
Theresa inwardly sighed in relief and replied, "Everything is under control here. Just focus on your tasks and return as soon as possible."
"If you say so. I will make sure to convey your message to the Alpha," Enoch replied before ending the call. Enoch found her words unconvincing, but had no other choice than to believe her, since she was the most reliable informant they had in the mansion. Moreover, there was no reason to lie about Aurora’s well-being since they were seemingly fond of each other.
