Chapter 104: Trusting Elder Timotei
"I am going to place my trust in you on this one, as we have got each other’s backs," he said, dismissing his worries and agreeing to her plan with a reassuring nod.
Sarah felt a surge of joy upon hearing Elder Timotei’s response. It seemed that the goddess favored her as the Luna, making their current situation run so smoothly. Naturally, Damien belonged to her, and she felt entitled to claim what she desired, regardless of the means. After all, she was the legal Luna brought in for him, it was only right she acted like the perfect Luna.
She feared being ignored once Aurora was out of Damien’s life, but with her mother by her side, it was only a matter of time before Damien succumbed to her trap.
"I would also like to accompany you to see the rogue, if that’s acceptable," he asked, attempting to convey his interest without sounding untrustworthy. Having already proven his loyalty to her, he didn’t want to raise doubts by appearing overly curious.
"I will be delighted if you came along," she replied inwardly, confident that she could shift blame onto him if their plan failed.
If Elder Timotei believed she wouldn’t betray him, he was naive. In case their plan failed, someone needed to shoulder the blame, and it was only right for him to do so, given his seniority and her promising future.
Leading the way to the deepest part of the dungeon, where they held the rogue captive, Sarah surprised Elder Timotei with her ability to navigate the palace within just a month of residence. She appeared to have no difficulty finding her way, despite the mansion’s complexity.
While he was beginning to trust her, Elder Timotei decided not to let his guard down completely. As they ventured deeper into the dungeon, they reached a corridor with a wooden banner hanging at the entrance, boldly warning, "DANGER, STAY AWAY!."
They walked into the corridor, a series of cells with werewolves caged in appearing as they delved further. Elder Timotei was surprised to see the huge number of savage werewolves caged in, they never knew of the population but they were aware of their presence in the dungeon.
It was funny how Damien managed to capture these amounts, in such a short time of staying in the pack.
"Here we are, Elder Timotei," she announced as they stood outside a cell that exuded an aura of danger. Most cells in this part of the dungeon were reserved for monstrous werewolves, so how was she fearless?
Indeed, there were still some fearsome werewolves in nearby cells, but she maintained a composed demeanor. Her apparent fearlessness raised questions about the malicious intentions she might harbor.
They entered the cell where the rogue was chained to the wall, emanating a dark aura that made them take a step back in fear of an attack. Despite being securely restrained, there was a reason why they were kept in the mansion’s deepest part. Powerful barriers prevented them from escaping the inner area, and their abilities were significantly suppressed here. However, one should never underestimate the power of a beast.
The rogue growled, raising his head and asked in a hoarse yet desperate voice, "When do you plan to release me?"
"Once you fulfill our agreement," Sarah replied.
He bared his teeth, tugging at the chains as if attempting to free himself, though he knew it was futile. He despised taking orders from a mere she-wolf with power far inferior to that of a beta. If he hadn’t been so determined to get justice for a male wolf that was being bullied by his friends, he wouldn’t have ended up here. His trust in people was always his death as he was betrayed by the male wolf he saved.
He had learnt his lesson of minding his business no matter how ugly the scene could be.
"Save your strength for later, Darling," her sweet-sounding voice only added to his torment. He yearned to break free from her clutches, not caring if death were the only way out. Being tormented by a wolf of lower status was already a shame, and he wasn’t sure he could live with that memory once he was finally free, assuming that ever happened.
The more he observed her, the more she reminded him of the mate who had betrayed him, leading him into a life of a rogue. He used to be a former beta of a thriving pack, located far from his current surroundings. He had wielded immense power and authority, even surpassing the Alpha himself, who was bedridden due to his mental state.
As the acting Alpha, he had taken on the role when the ailing Alpha couldn’t recover from his illness. However, his life took a devastating turn when he met his mate, who desired power over love. She had managed to frame him for the Alpha’s death, which she had orchestrated with her accomplice. In the end, he became a rogue, refusing to accept responsibility for sins he didn’t commit. He wanted to believe a mate was one’s complete half, but he’s turned out to be his opposite half.
Despite being warned about her, he had refused to believe that his mate was capable of betraying him until it happened. This betrayal had left him with a solemn vow to never trust anyone for the rest of his days.
"Alright, enough with the futile struggles. Let’s focus on the matter at hand," she declared coldly, getting the rogue’s attention, and then revealing a small bottle to him.
Narrowing his eyes, Elyon examined the contents of the bottle and was nearly taken aback when he recognized it. The Crazy Drop was a potion manufactured in his former pack, where the herb used to make it was cultivated, but for a different purpose.
While it was used negatively by malicious individuals, in their pack, it was grown for a positive purpose, to awaken people’s dormant wolf. Excessive use could drive a wolf insane, which was why its sale was banned. How had she managed to obtain it from a pack so far from his own? Could there be a traitor who ignored the warnings in the pack?
However, worrying about a pack that had abandoned him over false accusations was futile. He berated himself for caring about a pack that had turned its back on him.
"It seems our guest here knows what this is," she said, satisfied with his reaction, and handed the bottle to the guard at her side.
"What do you intend to do with that?" he sneered, seemingly losing his composure. She wasn’t planning to use it on him, was she?
"Just a little magic to make you cooperate," she replied, a maniacal smile on her face.
"You are insane. Do you even know what this could do if used carelessly?" he asked, pointing out the obvious.
"Don’t worry, Darling, there’s an antidote. All you need to do is comply with our wishes in front of everyone in two days, and you will receive the antidote and your freedom," she explained. Elyon knew better than to trust someone who had the audacity to imprison a rogue, she could just as easily kill him.
"And you expect me to believe that? Screw you!" He spat at her, struggling against the iron and wolf’s bane chains, which only burned his skin more the harder he fought.
"Oh, I have a mate, so stop daydreaming," she said, earning a surprised look from Elder Timotei. Was she implying that she might have been intimate with Elyon if she didn’t have a mate?
"So, take your pick, whether you drink it willingly or we make you," she offered as if the choice mattered.
"I could go insane before I get the antidote. Don’t you care about the lives of your pack members?" His words seemed to surprise everyone in the cell, except for Sarah, who was solely focused on her own desires.
"Who said you would? Just do as we ask, and it will be as if you never took the potion," she pointed out, rolling her eyes at him. Why was he so talkative?
"Why do I need to drink that when I have already promised to do as you wish in exchange for my freedom?" He couldn’t understand her reasoning for threatening him with his insanity. He glanced at the older man, who appeared to be in his fifties, standing beside Sarah, wondering if he was her father or an elder in the pack.
"Would you please explain the risks to her? You can’t just watch her endanger your pack," he implored, trying to reason with the man. Not everyone had to be as unreasonable as her, and he saw the old man as the only one present who might understand. Sarah scowled, awaiting Elder Timotei’s response, knowing he was on her side.
"Mr...?" After a moment of silence, he began, pausing to confirm Elyon’s name, which left Elyon inwardly scoffing, finding it absurd that they still cared about showing respect after having him chained to the wall without reason.
Unless a rogue posed a threat to a pack or refused to leave, there was no justification for imprisoning one.
"Elyon," he revealed.
