Chapter 18: Her Brothers And Chaos

Evelisse blinked at Marta like she’d just been told a dragon was dancing on the roof.

Marta beamed, dabbing a soft towel over Evelisse’s shoulder. "Yes, Princess. All seven of them were in the East Garden kitchen before sunrise. The kitchen staff looked frightened. But excited!"

Steam still lingered from her citrus-scented bath, curling lazily in the morning light.

Evelisse groaned. "Excited or traumatized?"

"Hard to say, really. Your brother Prince Jared had flour on his eyelashes."

Fluffy floated by the mirror with a dramatic sigh. "This should be a performance worth witnessing. Should I bring popcorn?"

"They insisted," Marta said with a twinkle in her eye. "All seven of your brothers. Something about honoring the puppy’s Big Day."

Fluffy popped into view just above Evelisse’s damp curls, tail flicking. "There’s a non-zero chance your food will be hexed, charred, or both."

Evelisse chuckled as Marta helped her into a robe, soft peach trimmed with golden silk. The scent of rose petals and steamed citrus bread drifted through the air as birds chirped outside her balcony.

Marta wrapped a silky robe around her shoulders. "Your dress is almost ready. But for now, breakfast first. The princes await you in the East Garden."

The moment her hair was tied back in a simple braid adorned with tiny pearl pins, Evelisse scooped Snugglewuff into her arms and padded barefoot across the warm marble floor toward the East Garden.

"May the heavens protect us all," she muttered.

The East Garden was chaos disguised as festivity.

A long table sat beneath the blooming wisteria vines, draped in white linen and lined with mismatched breakfast dishes. Croissants, fruit platters, half-melted butter sculptures—and, most noticeably, a smoking tray of bone-shaped biscuits that had definitely seen better days.

"Eve!" Jared waved, his apron lopsided and his cheeks dusted with soot. "Ta-da! I call them ’Heroic Butter Bones’!"

Evelisse approached cautiously. "Heroic, huh?"

Jared beamed. "Half of them survived the flames!"

Snugglewuff sniffed the air. Then very deliberately buried his face in Evelisse’s sleeve.

Fluffy whispered, "That’s the royal version of ’No, thank you.’"

Leo leapt up from the far end of the table in a cloud of sparkles. "Behold!" he cried. "I bring enchanted chew toys, blessed by the Royal Mage himself! This one squeaks a lullaby. This one chimes on the hour. And this one—well, don’t shake that one indoors."

Snugglewuff tilted his head.

Lance followed behind him, carrying a basket. "And I got one that squeaks in three tones and five languages!"

’Three tones and languages?! Ha!’ Evelisse snorted in her thoughts.

One orb rolled toward Snugglewuff and squeaked, "Greetings, noble beast."

Evelisse stared. "...It speak?"

"Of course," Lance said proudly. "Snugglewuff is cultured."

Snugglewuff barked and pounced.

Leo added, "And this one glows if it senses danger. Or snacks. Mostly snacks."

Evelisse blinked. "Big brother Leo and Lance robbed the Royal Mage’s storeroom, didn’t you?"

"He owes us!" they said in unison.

Lucien sat at the head of the table, reading a scroll, trying very hard not to notice the chaos unraveling around him.

Felix was on all fours, crawling under the table with a ribbon. "Snugglewuff! Want to sit on my lap? Or my pillow? I embroidered it just for you!"

Callum arrived last, quietly placing a small box in Evelisse’s hand. Inside lay a delicate collar—thin gold etched with Snugglewuff’s name and two protective runes glimmering like starlight.

"It’s beautiful," Evelisse breathed. "

Callum smiled faintly. "I figured he deserves to be safe. Not just cute."

The collar shimmered under the morning sun, engraved with elegant lettering: Snugglewuff – Royal Companion.

Snugglewuff tried to eat it.

Callum blinked. "He has excellent taste."

Lucien, sitting at the end of the table, appeared unbothered. He stirred his tea. "The dog doesn’t need a wardrobe."

Snugglewuff trotted over to him, licked his boot, and sat.

Lucien’s hand froze.

Everyone held their breath.

Then, wordlessly, Lucien picked up the puppy, held him against his chest, and muttered, "...He’s acceptable."

Felix squealed. "I call dibs on sleeping next to him tonight!"

Leo jumped up. "No fair! I brought enchanted toys!"

"I made biscuits!" Jared cried.

"He likes MY lap!" Felix snapped.

Lance pointed at his collar. "I brought the sparkle!"

Lucien scowled. "He licked my boot."

Evelisse sat at the table, tea forgotten, both hands over her mouth as she giggled helplessly. ’They’ve gone feral over a puppy.’

Snugglewuff trotted between them in content loops, basking in the chaos.

Evelisse covered her mouth with both hands, still giggling. ’I’ve never seen them act like this before. It’s like... they’re kids again.’

"They’ve completely lost it," she whispered to Fluffy.

"They were never in possession of ’it,’" Fluffy replied. "But this is glorious."

The next twenty minutes became a full-scale tug-of-pup.

Leo tossed sparkling chew balls.

Jared juggled biscuits.

Felix dangled a stuffed duck over Evelisse’s chair.

Lance tried to coax the pup onto a tiny satin cushion embroidered with "Fluff Majesty."

Callum quietly whittled a tiny wooden bone from a cinnamon stick.

Lucien... gave Snugglewuff three belly rubs. Secretly.

Snugglewuff lay in the center of it all, tail wagging furiously.

"Did he just wink?" Leo whispered.

"He’s magical," Felix said in awe. "I can feel it."

Jared flailed. "Wait—what if he’s a legendary beast in disguise?"

"Like a pocket-sized direwolf?" Leo asked.

Lance gasped. "We’re raising a prophecy!"

Evelisse lost it. She laughed until her sides hurt.

She glanced across the table.

Only one brother hadn’t joined the madness.

Marcus.

He sat quietly at the edge, sipping fruit tea and watching with a faint smile.

Not disinterested.

Just... thoughtful.

His eyes weren’t on the food. Or the flying toys. Or the biscuits.

They were locked onto Snugglewuff. Then he shook his head and looked away.

Fluffy blinked. "Huh. That was... odd."

’You felt that too?’

"Yep. He looked like he recognized something."

Evelisse tilted her head. ’What are you thinking, big brother, Marcus?’

As if sensing her gaze, Marcus looked up.

And smiled.

He rose, walked to her, and pulled something from his coat pocket.

A pouch.

Velvet. Midnight blue. Tied with a silver thread.

He handed it to her. "Open it at the ceremony."

Evelisse blinked. "Wait, what is it?"
