Chapter 19: Long Live Snugglewuff!!

He just gave her a faint smile. "A gift. It’ll make sense later."

Then he walked off to meet the rest before she could ask more.

Fluffy floated beside her head, eyes narrowed. "Okay... why does that feel like a plot hook?"

Evelisse held the pouch close to her chest.

’I guess we’ll find out.’

Fluffy whispered, "That thing’s humming with old enchantment. You’re going to want to be seated when you open it."

Evelisse laughed nervously. ’So either it’s magical or it’s going to explode. Great.’

Felix suddenly popped up. "I propose we let Snugglewuff choose who he loves most. We line up, and he walks to one of us. Whoever he chooses gets to feed him his first ceremonial cookie!"

Snugglewuff, hearing his name, perked up and barked.

Lucien raised a brow. "The dog doesn’t get to play kingmaker."

"He licked your boots. You’re obviously biased," Jared snapped.

Leo stood. "Alright, everyone! Line up. Make it dramatic. This is Snugglewuff’s court!"

The seven brothers stood shoulder to shoulder like knights awaiting a royal decree.

Evelisse sat on the cushion beside the table, trying not to burst from laughter.

Fluffy cackled in her ear. "I’m saving this to memory forever."

Snugglewuff looked at them.

Then turned.

And trotted straight toward Evelisse.

All seven brothers groaned in unison.

"I guess I win," Evelisse said sweetly, lifting him into her arms. "Shall I feed him the first biscuit, Your Highnesses?"

Jared sulked. "It’s the apron, isn’t it?"

Fluffy nodded solemnly. "Definitely the apron."

The Royal Garden looked like something out of a fae dream.

Cascading rose vines curled around golden archways, crystal wind chimes whispered in the breeze, and soft clouds of enchanted petals drifted lazily through the air. From above, the palace’s famed Light Crystal hovered, pulsing gently with silvery light, ready to sanctify the occasion.

Evelisse stood just behind a satin-draped curtain, Snugglewuff nestled in her arms, and the mysterious pouch tucked into the sash around her waist. She could hear the soft hum of the crowd—courtiers chattering, children giggling, and noble ladies fluttering fans as they speculated about the event.

"Princess Evelisse will now make her entrance," announced the herald, his voice magically amplified.

Her heart skipped. Fluffy did a little spin near her braid.

"Time to dazzle," he whispered. "And maybe not trip over your flower-petal skirt."

’Gee, thanks for the encouragement.’

Evelisse adjusted the pouch tucked discreetly at her side, heart pattering against her ribs.

Nobles in elegant dress clustered on velvet seats arranged in a semicircle. The Celestial Choir stood to one side, robes so pristine they almost glowed, each holding a scroll and waiting.

With a deep breath, Evelisse stepped forward.

Gasps followed.

Her dress shimmered like morning dew on cherry blossoms, layered in soft hues of rose and peach, each petal hand-stitched with tiny enchanted glimmers. A flower crown rested delicately in her hair, and tiny glittering butterflies circled her like she was spring incarnate.

And in her arms? The star of the show.

Snugglewuff yawned dramatically.

"Remember the sculpting Snugglewuff in marzipan?" Fluffy pointed out.

Evelisse peeked to the side and spotted the artist sculpting furrowed brows and a marshmallowy snout into sugar. Snugglewuff’s nose twitched.

’Please don’t sneeze on your candy self.’

A gentle hush swept over the crowd as Queen Seraphina stepped forward, radiant in a flowing gown of twilight lavender threaded with silver. Her hair, coiled like a crown of soft flames, was adorned with sapphire combs, and her presence alone quieted the nobility.

"She looks like she could tame dragons just by smiling," Evelisse whispered.

Fluffy hovered beside her, faux-weeping. "Behold the woman who made every noble jealous by simply existing."

"Welcome, all," Seraphina said with a smile that melted through every icy noble’s heart. "Dear guests, loyal retainers, and fluffy enthusiasts alike," she began, her voice rich and warm, "thank you for attending the Royal Name Blessing Ceremony." Her eyes sparkled. "Yes. This is very much a thing."

Laughter rippled through the crowd.

She paused with a knowing glance at the princes lounging nearby. Jared gave a sheepish wave.

"In times of healing, joy is sacred. This little pup—" she gestured toward Snugglewuff, "—has brought laughter to our halls, soothed tears with a sneeze, and apparently—" she raised her brow, "—has a taste for royal slippers."

The nobles chuckled, guards tried to hold in snorts, and even one of the choir members choked politely behind his hymn scroll.

She glanced down at Evelisse, her gaze loving and proud. "When our little princess named her companion Snugglewuff, she unknowingly gave him a name that carries peace. That brings joy. And that teaches us all that love doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful."

Polite applause rippled through the crowd.

"And now, before we proceed with the name blessing, allow me to introduce our special guests—"

A pause. Seraphina gave a mock-serious look. "—the Celestial Choir, who canceled lunch just for us."

Laughter again.

The choir stepped forward—elderly men and women in shimmering robes, holding crystal harps and wind chimes. They began a melodic chant, harmonies echoing in the garden air.

Snugglewuff yawned.

’Is it bad that he’s handling the attention better than I am?’ Evelisse thought.

Fluffy spun slowly, pretending to hold binoculars. "All that’s left now is a charming young prince to fall for you and call you ’Princess Snugglewhiskers and say you’re his destiny."

Evelisse nearly dropped the dog. ’What?! I’m seven!’

"You *used* to be seventeen," Fluffy teased, puckering its lips into exaggerated kissing sounds. "It’s called childhood sweethearts, princess."

’No, Fluffy.’ Evelisse deadpanned. ’Absolutely not.’

Evelisse gave a mental scream and elbowed the air where Fluffy hovered.

Thankfully, the priest signaled for her to approach.

Taking a steady breath, Evelisse stepped onto the central dais.

Soft petals scattered around her feet. The crowd quieted.

She held Snugglewuff aloft, like a tiny, sneezy lion cub.

"Today," she declared with all the seriousness her small frame could muster, "I name thee Snugglewuff. Fluffiest of companions. Boldest of barkers. Biscuit enthusiast."

’What the hell am I saying?! This is embarrassing!!!’

Snugglewuff gave a bark.

Then sneezed.

A minor wind ripple surged outward.

The marzipan sculpture of him—painstakingly crafted by the famed Vellayne sugar sculptor—toppled over with a splat.

Gasps echoed.

Fluffy blinked. "Did he just sneeze magic?"

The choir cut off mid-hymn. All eyes turned.

The Royal Mage stepped forward, a long-bearded man in glittering robes, six rings on each finger, and golden spectacles.

He squinted. Adjusted his monocle.

"That sneeze," he muttered. "It held mana..."
