Chapter 17: A Royal Naming Ceremony For a Puppy?
Chapter 17: A Royal Naming Ceremony For a Puppy?
"A Name Blessing," the Queen said with all the seriousness of declaring war. "It’s tradition! We announce the pup’s name to the court, bless it under the Light Crystal, and give him a tiny silk cloak. Maybe the Celestial Choir if they’re not busy—"
’Is she serious?!’
Evelisse’s jaw dropped. "Wait. You’re going to hold a whole ceremony? For a puppy?"
"He’s not just any puppy," Seraphina said, petting Snugglewuff’s head. "He’s your bonded companion."
’In my past life, I didn’t even get a naming ceremony! And now a dog gets a choir?!’
"I didn’t even get a naming ceremony in my last life," she muttered under her breath. "But sure, let’s crown the dog."
Fluffy choked on air. "Wait. Did she say... a silk cloak?"
’Do you get one too?’ Evelisse asked sweetly. ’Did your creator bless you under a holy furball or whatever?’
Fluffy puffed up. "Excuse me, princess! I was born from pure system code, thank you very much. I don’t need cloaks. I am the moment."
She snorted. "Sounds like jealousy."
"I’m fine. Totally fine. Just gonna update my resume: ’Former fluffiest being in the castle.’"
Seraphina chuckled at her daughter’s antics. "I’ll let the seamstress know to begin preparations immediately."
"Mommy," Evelisse said, trying very hard not to sound sarcastic, "is the ceremony... necessary?"
Seraphina looked positively scandalized. "Evelisse Aimie Ashthorne, do you want to send a message to the kingdom that your pet is unloved and unblessed?"
"...That feels a little too big."
"You named him Snugglewuff. That’s practically a royal decree of affection." Seraphina countered.
Fluffy added, "She’s not wrong."
Evelisse groaned dramatically. ’Okay, fine. But I promise, if anyone bows to him, I’m running away to the bakery to get myself all their candy.’
"You’re the one who named him like a sentient pillow," Fluffy cackled.
Evelisse cuddled Snugglewuff close, rubbing her cheek against his soft fur. "Don’t listen to anyone who can’t handle your cuteness, Snugglewuff. You’re perfect."
Snugglewuff gave a contented snore.
Evelisse grinned and hugged Snugglewuff tightly. "Still... thank you, Mommy. I love him. Like, a lot."
Seraphina brushed a lock of hair from her face. "And he already loves you back. I can feel it."
The puppy sneezed again, then burrowed into her arms.
Evelisse smiled, heart full.
The golden light from the windows streamed in, casting a halo over them. For a moment, the world was soft.
Safe.
Whole.
She tilted her head toward her mother. "So when is this... blessing thing supposed to happen?"
"Oh, probably tomorrow or the day after," Seraphina said casually. "I’ll inform the priests. They’ve been dying for an excuse to sing the old hymns."
Evelisse buried her face in Snugglewuff’s fur. ’I was just starting to feel normal. And now I’ve adopted a literal ceremony magnet.’
Fluffy chuckled. "Welcome to royalty, Princess."
Seraphina tilted her head. "Can I hold him?"
Evelisse hesitated for a half-second. ’Mine.’
But she nodded and passed him over gently. The Queen cradled him like a newborn, cooing as he nuzzled into her elbow.
"He loves you already," Seraphina murmured. "Animals know."
Evelisse’s heart twisted. It was true. Snugglewuff had chosen her like it was fate. No hesitation. No questions.
Just trust.
Just like she wished someone had done for her, once.
’Maybe... this is what being chosen feels like.’
She smiled to herself, tucking her legs beneath her as she watched the two of them.
"I’m going to teach him tricks," she declared. "And dress him up. And carry him in a basket like a baby."
"Ambitious," Fluffy noted. "Next you’ll be commissioning a mini throne."
Evelisse gasped. ’That’s actually genius.’
Fluffy facepawed.
Seraphina laughed warmly. "You’re glowing, sweetheart."
Evelisse blinked. "I am?"
"Like sunshine. You’ve never looked this... light."
And Evelisse realized she felt it.
Light.
Warm.
Like something had unfurled inside her chest after being shut for too long.
Snugglewuff yawned again in Seraphina’s arms, then promptly rolled onto his back and exposed his belly.
Evelisse grinned. "Oh no. He’s got me wrapped around his tiny toe beans."
Seraphina leaned over. "That’s what love does."
Then, Fluffy gave a very dramatic sigh.
Evelisse raised a brow. "What now?"
"I might need to update my title to ’former fluffiest being.’"
She burst into laughter, covering her mouth. ’You’ll always be my number one System fox.’
Fluffy flipped its tail in mock pride. "You better be right, princess."
Fluffy hovered near its head. "You’re famous now, Snugglewuff. Hope you like being bathed in rose water and sung to by old men in robes."
Snugglewuff yawned.
Evelisse smirked the moment Seraphina handed Snugglewuff back to her.
Brushing her fingers through Snugglewuff’s silky fur. The puppy squirmed slightly, then melted into her arms like butter on warm bread. His tiny body radiated warmth, his ears twitching as if already dreaming of noble adventures and stolen socks.
It should have ended there—a perfect moment.
But it didn’t.
Because Seraphina, looking positively radiant with motherly excitement, clapped her hands once and declared, "Preparations for the Name Blessing Ceremony shall begin tomorrow!"
Evelisse blinked. "Wait, seriously?!"
Seraphina nodded with royal resolve. "He’s your official companion now. That makes him a member of the royal household. A ceremony is only proper."

The next morning, the palace buzzed with activity. Birds chirped louder, flowers seemed perkier, and the castle staff moved at double speed. Evelisse stared out her bedroom window in awe. Below, servants dashed around the courtyard with floral garlands, fabric swatches, and something that looked suspiciously like a puppy-sized chariot.
"A whole ceremony," Evelisse whispered. "For Snugglewuff."
Fluffy, hovering beside her with an imaginary clipboard, nodded sagely. "Tailors, florists, bakers... oh look, they even brought in the golden sugar sculptor from Vellayne."
"Wait, is that the guy who made the life-sized edible swan for big brother Jared’s birthday?"
"Yep. And today, he’s sculpting Snugglewuff in marzipan."
Evelisse dragged her hand down her face. ’I just wanted a name.’
Still, a strange warmth bubbled inside her. A ceremony. For her puppy. For something she chose.
She hugged her knees on the velvet window seat, Snugglewuff curled in her lap, snoring gently. His tiny chest rose and fell like a lullaby.
Her bedroom, normally a haven of quiet velvet drapes and chubby plush chairs, now buzzed with maids darting around with fabric rolls, ribbons, and a dozen royal messengers fluttering about like well-dressed sparrows.
"Did the Queen say to use moonlace trim or velvet tassels on the puppy’s cloak?"
"Moonlace, dear, it catches the sun better for the blessing photo scrolls."
"I don’t understand," Evelisse whispered to Fluffy as they were ushered toward the fitting room. "Is this normal?"
"For your family? Yes."
The fitting room looked like a designer tornado had passed through. Spools of golden thread littered the floor. One seamstress held up two puppy capes. "Feathered or crystal-studded?"
Snugglewuff sneezed.
Evelisse gave a helpless laugh. "Feathered, I guess?"
"Excellent choice!"
Evelisse stared in wide-eyed wonder, Snugglewuff curled into her lap like a perfect marshmallow.
’Is this what it feels like to accidentally schedule a royal wedding... for a dog?’
Fluffy floated lazily near the ceiling, sipping some virtual data tea. "You should enjoy being spoiled, princess. This is a once-in-a-flufftime ceremony."
Evelisse groaned. ’You’re full of terrible puns today.’
"I’m compensating for the rise of your new furry overlord."
"Royal events are basically weddings without the vows," Fluffy said. "Also, you might be the first princess in history to have their puppy get his own coronation."
She nudged Snugglewuff. "You better appreciate this."
He rolled onto his back, belly up, paws twitching, then back to it’s belly as it stretched dramatically, placing one tiny paw over her hand as if to claim her forever.
She nuzzled his forehead. "Okay, fine. He is cute enough for a ceremony. Maybe."
After what looked like a blur of cleaning activities, all maids gave a bow and filed out of her room.
Then came the knock.
"Could I come in, Your Highness?" Marta asked gently.
Evelisse perked up. "Definitely!"
She shuffled out in a soft, peach silk night dress embroidered with tiny paw prints.
Marta, her ever-efficient handmaid, was already prepping her dress the moment she stepped in and preparing her bath, the next.
"Today’s the day," Marta beamed. "You’re going to shine like the sun, Princess."
Evelisse yawned. "Does Snugglewuff have to wear pants?"
"No, but he will be wearing a bowtie the size of your head."
She almost choked on her laughter.
"Your Royal Highnesses have prepared something special for your breakfast today." Marta beamed happily while patting down on Evelisse’s wet body with a towel.
"They made breakfast?!"
