Chapter 49: Rescued from the Morgue

Detective Haxton’s agreement with Cade was clear - that he should provide evidence that proves Mrs Jackson responsible for all the crimes he told him she committed... And finally turn himself in again.

Yes, Cade told him everything. That Kieran Holland was never responsible for killing Mr Stamps. That Mrs Jackson was the true devil.

This was when the detective visited him in the cell recently, asking if he had anything else to tell him outside the discussion they had last time. Because... If it were really that trillionaire’s order to kill Mr Stamps, why would he let him tell the police that he did so? Blowing his own cover?

Cade didn’t respond until he made mention of his hospitalised grandmother. On one part, it was impressive how intelligent the police were to even find out about that.

It took the detective just,

"Probably, they’re making you do all this just to keep your grandma safe. But... were they able to keep your little sister safe back then?" for Cade to open up and let him in on his plan.

Haxton reported that he did a rough background check on him and his sister’s death happened to be in one of the case files at the station, which was initially considered a suicide until a witness gave his statement.

It was in a dense forest a few miles from Wolvermoth District, on a silent night when the body of a high school student was found hanging by the branch of a tree.

The rope had strangled her dead before the police could reach there, and they were no magicians to know what happened before her death.

Just what they saw at the scene was enough for them - her clothes showed no signs of blood neither did her body hold any marks of torture... So, it was half reasonable to take it as suicide.

But Detective Haxton had his concerns back then, as his team was assigned to handle the case. He had his concerns because there was a red bruise around the girl’s wrist.

Her name was Danny Jones.

They could have said she might have done that to herself if she were a psycho, or a junkie, but this girl in question was a free-living high school girl that happily does part time jobs to support herself and her grandmother.... When the brother, Cade Jones, had left home.

And meanwhile, the bruise on her wrist appeared to be from a hand a few inches wider than Danny’s, so it was very obvious someone, a man, had forcefully dragged her by her wrist to do something.

This realisation screamed murder yet they had no solid evidence to prove it... until they found a witness.

A streamer guy.

This was more than two years ago; the guy was seated on an opposite chair to the ones occupied by Haxton and their team leader – Detective Marks – in the interrogation room.

Haxton was just an officer back then, not yet a detective, but still allowed in all interrogation rooms because of his competency.

The streamer guy, slim-faced and lean, had said, fidgeting anxiously, "... Uhm, it was late at night that day." He fidgeted more, swallowing. His voice shakened, "M-my team were waiting for me in the forest, wearing troll face costumes...

B-because... you know, as a streamer, you have to make lies believable to your followers. I had told them... there was a creepy creature in the forest, b-but you know, it was a lie and my costumed team would act that-"

Haxton had slammed his fist on the table, impatient as ever, "This interrogation isn’t about you! Go straight to the point..."

Detective Marks had cautioned him, "Let the guy breathe, Dave. He’s slowly getting there."

Everyone knew Officer Dave Haxton for one thing. He was too impatient and had a hot temper, which at times ended up getting things really messed up. But he learned to change himself, and yes, he succeeded.

In the aftermath, the streamer guy explained seeing a black van driving into the forest suddenly and a set of guys dragging a wailing girl out. They brought her up the slope to a tree around whose branch they hung a rope from.

.... The words had been bitter, but still what it was - they hung her, till she strangled off the rest of her life. And she fell silent. The guy ended up bursting into tears too, because he blamed himself for just hiding and watching as they murdered her.

And that day was the first time Haxton tried to be reasonable too, because the guy’s words hit him so much.

"All my fans see me as a nice and brave person. Not knowing I do all that just to gain their love and support. I on one side try convincing myself I was a really nice person... until the answer came finding me.

Maybe it was because there won’t be no cash donation, no likes, no gifts and no glazing... that I didn’t stop the guys from murdering her. Maybe because none of my fans was watching... Ah! I’m so sorry, officers. Please forgive me."

As much as Haxton tried digging deeper into the case later on his own, he found nothing to even prove the guy right either. He visited car dealer shops nearby... and even checked all black vans’ camcorders. But the result was the same.

The authority later forced their team to conclude the case as suicide and move on to other ones. And the reason why they had to give that order?

Because no one really cares about the girl. None of her family members are even looking for her.

Haxton had yelled at the Commissioner of Police, and that was his tenth time being suspended.

What did he mean no one cares about her?! Her grandmother had a heart attack over the news and that’s what had kept her hospitalised till today.

... Haxton sighed as he stood at the door of the morgue. He clasped his hand around the door and walked into the freezing space with a sense of purpose, one to free the aggrieved brother to avenge his dead sister.

He locked the door as he entered, and then moved forward to slide open a cold chamber tagged "Cade Jones".

The police had confirmed him dead afterwards, so they transferred him to this mortuary. It was a private one, only for either victims or culprits they were investigating.

Haxton checked his wristwatch; it remains just two minutes before the Lazarine’s effect would be over. Soon, the time reached, but Cade still didn’t wake up.

Haxton had seen that coming so he had come with a plier... This was one of the things he warned Cade about recently. It was that if he still doesn’t wake up even when the time’s up, which was a common case with Lazarine dosage, he would have to cause a few damages to his body so the pain would alert his respiratory system.

The surge of stimuli to your brain will restore your consciousness if you fail to wake on your own... And no, I’m not a doctor. Just knew this.... This was exactly what Haxton told him.

He ended up pulling out his finger, and Cade woke up with a muffled groan. Even when he’s asleep, he knows to act cool with his pain?

Well, not bad.

Thus, they both sneaked out of the morgue, with Cade in a new dress because he was naked back then. And they slid into the car in the parking lot.

The engine kicked into action, and the car sped out.

Meanwhile, just as they left, two guys came out from hiding. They were both tall, gallant, with broad shoulders and in black suits. Their eyes were as though a robot’s, completely devoid of emotion.

The leaner one tapped his earbud and in a second, said, "We have got our eyes on the target, Chairman."

The husky and crisp voice of the old man came through, "Bring him to meet me soon."

"Alright. On it, sir."
