Chapter 50: Abandoned on the Road
Chapter 50: Abandoned on the Road
Detective Haxton played a pop music — Moonlight by Danis Hewyes— as the car moved on a highway road.
At least, the thoughts of a music playing would distract the mind from this slightly awkward moment. None of them had talked since.
As Haxton turned the steering left, the car drifting into a free, lone road, he asked Cade, who never removed his distant eyes from the front whatsoever,
"So... How’re you going to find the evidence?"
"Resort to abduction," Cade replied bluntly.
Detective Haxton frowned as he stared at him for some seconds, then sighed and looked back forward. He nodded. "That, you’re allowed for now." Then immediately, he stuck his finger at Cade and rushed to say, "BUT... know I’m adding it to your charges once we get done with this case."
Cade swiftly turned at him, his expression almost emotionless, with some wrinkles at the corners of his lips that showed frustration. "Guess you don’t want me to carry on the mission anymore."
Detective Haxton chuckled. "I’m kidding, Mr. Grumpy —"
Just as he was about to complete that, he heard a loud rev from beside him. He looked sideways through the window in wonder of who might be driving that fast... But he didn’t only see the black Jeep, but it sped past them.
Haxton had wanted to tell the two black-suited guys inside of it he was the police, that the speed was above the limit on this road, and they were even driving in the wrong lane... But he couldn’t care less when those same people blocked his way with their car ahead. They then pulled over.
Detective Haxton slowed down, leaning forward. "Huh? What’re they doing?"
If the guys don’t move their car away, that means the detective’s own can’t move forward either. This was a two-way road...
"Stop the car!" Cade suddenly shouted so much the detective’s chest tightened, and he almost turned the steering the wrong way before he got a hang of it.
The car’s wheels groaned... Their bodies jerked forward under the momentum. But most importantly, Detective Haxton saw Cade suddenly rush out of the car.
He jumped straight out too, even now that the guy was walking to the other two crazy ones ahead.
"Hey, Mr Jones! What’re you doing?" Detective Haxton shouted.
Cade clenched his jaw as he moved slowly to those black-suited guys. They were just leaning around the car, not coming to get him... Because they both knew he had no choice but to surrender. He knew them, not as friends, but as a pair that used to send orders to Mrs Jackson herself, from their own boss.
Their boss — Chairman Holland.
And the reason they were here? If taking a guess on this means he will win a lottery, he had better start pricing yachts and private islands already..
So far he surrenders and goes with them, there won’t be a problem. No one will get hurt. But as if you would hope for that when a police is around. They’re always claiming a right that never existed... And that was the same thing Detective Haxton did, pulling out his ID card. And raising it high up.
He shouted, "Everybody, freeze!"
Cade sighed as he slowly turned at him. He stepped a little bit closer and groaned under his breath, "What the hell are you doing?! Have you got any idea the trouble I’m saving you from by going with them? There’s absolutely nothing you can do here, so you had better left before things go the other way. Do NOT intervene in this, detective!"
"Sad news," Detective Haxton mumbled, walking towards him, "I was known for being the stubborn goat in the department. Maybe it’s time I broke character."
His intention was to get past Cade and question the others. But just as he was about to do so, across the person he took for an accomplice, they lunged at him.
Detective Haxton had skilfully jerked back, Cade’s fist missing him by just an inch.
"Oh! I thought we were friends," Detective Haxton said out loud as he raised his fists, his shoulders dropping in a boxer’s stance. "I guess you’ll never change."
"What then?! You want to intervene in something that’s not your business and die because of it?" Cade groaned.
Detective Haxton’s lips parted for a few moments, looking between Cade and those guys. Who were they, for him to say this?
Die?
But then, he swallowed.
"Well, maybe you should have given someone else that much concern. Not leave them abandoned and hung in the forest like a—"
"Uh... What the fuck did you just say?" Cade groaned. And then rushed towards him. "You..."
Wham! — Before Cade himself could reach the detective, one of the two guys had closed in on him and punched his stomach so hard he cried out.
Haxton spat out blood, dropped to his knees and then onto the ground with his stomach pressing against the granite. He passed out. Cade was agape, worry crossing his eyes, but after a few seconds, he assumed it was at least better that they didn’t kill him.
Then, he willingly followed the guys into the car and left with them, leaving the detective’s body lying on the road.

At Aston Haven five-star restaurant...
The place was empty today as well, just for two important people to have a private talk. Mr Kieran Holland and Mrs Elizabeth Jackson.
The woman’s face wasn’t telling neither happiness nor sadness, clad in a simple red gown, with even no jewellery on. Maybe it was time someone reminded her — they were here to talk business, whatever the circumstances, not mourn someone.
Well, if she were to mourn someone, then she should have chosen a black dress instead....
She cleared her throat to speak, but just as she was about to, Kieran’s phone chimed with a message...
Kieran raised a finger as he glanced towards his phone. "One sec," he said.
"You can just make it an order if you want to," Mrs Jackson grumped.
But who cares what a lake that once threatened to be an ocean and cause a tsunami laments about now that it’s dry?
Kieran looked at the message. It was from Amanda, who said:
*Just getting the report from the police that Cade Jones, the captain of Mrs Jackson’s gang, died around four hours ago.*
He raised his brows. And then, looked up.
He thought, staring at Mrs Jackson, ’Going all out to seal a deal, aren’t ya?’
The woman exhaled and asked in a serious tone, "So... Are you going to help me?"
"Yeah, you can still run the second largest shareholder position in that company," Kieran said. But on one condition. "If you stop attempting to murder anyone... And also, tell me about my father. The Chairman." Kieran shifted in his seat, intrigued. "What businesses did you guys have together?"
Mrs Jackson chuckled. "No, no... You have to ask that from him. I suppose you guys have met by now..."
Kieran leaned back, smiling faintly. "Which was at his welcome-back party. You must have been there too..." But he scoffed afterwards, "... Oh, I forgot. You’re no longer a company owner, so now down the hierarchy in the society."
"All thanks to you for flaunting your wealth," Mrs Jackson said back with a tight smile.
Kieran smirked. Moments later, he said, "I guess we have a deal then. I have recorded our conversation, so know taking back your words after I give you a stay in the company doesn’t count."
Mrs Jackson clenched her jaw, had a lot to say, but just grabbed her bag and stomped towards the door. While a few paces behind Kieran, she turned and suggested with a teasing smile,
"You know what? Maybe you go to an audition soon and see for yourself why you aren’t yet at the top of the world. Trust me, so many of them are—"
"If I’m not at the top yet, imagine where you’ll be, Mrs Jackson," Kieran scoffed, slowly turning his head back. But he raised his brows and said, "Maybe later. When I am done... confirming if the captain of your gang is really dead."
Mrs Jackson swallowed, tilting her head. "What...?"
"You killed him, didn’t you?"
