Chapter 48: A Chance to Save and Avenge

There was no way to get the card back.

Kieran sighed in frustration and rested back in his seat. He soon returned to the penthouse to see Amanda in the lounge, having created a slide of someone’s information on the TV screen. It was Richard, the same person Kieran had leaked his information to a random hooker.

But it depends on whether his brother was just like him, doesn’t it? A bad guy like Kieran.

They dedicated some minutes to knowing more about Richard. Twenty years of age, yet already managing a mining company that produces jewellery.

But that was a bit of shocking news for Kieran, because someone who produces jewellery would also be a bit of a type to wear it and seek extravagance.

And how he saw Richard was different.

He seemed just like a bookworm that had the chance to be a CEO, a businessman - people like them are always neutral when it comes to fashion. Too bad his brother was the direct opposite of himself.

Well, that was what Kieran assumed until Amanda switched to a couple more slides. Even Kieran’s jaws dropped and brows creased at this point.

... Like older brother, like younger brother it is now.

Because the next were pictures of Richard on islands, beaches, yachts and even jets with so many ladies. He was wearing baggy non-thick shirts and short knickers, diamond necklaces around his neck and rings of the same kind around his fingers.

Like older brother, like younger brother, indeed.

’Maybe I actually got him a new bitch then,’ Kieran thought, a slight smile dancing on his face as he spread his arms over the couch’s shoulders.

When Amanda reached the end of the slides, she turned to him and asked, "Shall we proceed to the next person?"

"The Chairman... Yeah," Kieran gave her the go-ahead.

"... But he’s a kind of very secretive man, so I couldn’t skim out more than this," Amanda warned as she scrolled through her i-pad.

Kieran leaned forward at this point, chin resting on his palm and a frown of interest on his face. In one way or another, he should be able to get some hints about what the Chairman could have possibly had with Mrs Jackson. Judging by his personality.

But he couldn’t get that much at the end of everything. Indeed, Amanda could only get a few details because the slides were only five in number.

Two things were though obvious - the man was an atheist and had some sets of capable bodyguards. The news said most of them had got black belts in karate.

But the question still lingered. What exactly did this man have with Mrs Jackson?

----

Three days later, in the police station...

Unlike last time, everywhere was noisy with the disturbing clicking of the keyboard as operators typed quickly and the beeping of telephones. An officer swiftly moved through the crowd into a corner, then climbed the stairs to the cell unit.

He was no one other than the one who catered to Mrs Jackson’s order on her last visit. The one Cade Jones assumed was one of her spies too. He pulled his cap down over his face as another officer walked past him, and they both bowed to each other as a sign of respect.

Then, he stopped at the front of a cell. He instantly covered his nose with his arm as the foul scent of decay came from inside the cell, but... Neither surprise nor wonder was on his face. Just calm, as though he had seen that coming already.

He then bent to pick up an empty, uncorked small bottle.

Hemlock - the poison.

He then turned away and paced three times leftwards as he dialled a number on his phone. Seconds later, the recipient picked up the call and he said straight away,

"Cade Jones is down, ma’am."

After some moments of inaudible discussion, those to whom the officer nodded continuously in response, the call disconnected.

... But the moment that the officer was about to head towards the door, he met the sight of someone who made his throat run dry.

"D-"

Detective Haxton shouted, aiming a gun at him, "Your hands above your head!"

The officer instantly complied, gritting his teeth as his heart raced up.

"Damn it!" he cursed under his breath. He just had to be so careless and end up exposing himself. What a non-worthwhile attempt!

"You have your radio with you, right?" Detective Haxton, the same one who interrogated Cade last time, asked in a strong tone, his eyes lacking any bit of humour.

The officer stammered, "Y-yes," and his hands shivered towards his pocket and... immediately back above his head, when he thought doing that might seem like he would pull out a gun or something. His heart raced.

But Detective Haxton gestured at him to go on nonetheless. When he was now holding the radio up, the detective told him,

"Report that... Cade Jones passed away today. By taking the Hemlock poison."

"W-what...?" the officer stuttered weakly. Why does something feel off about this?

He slowly spun his head backwards, his breathing itching with every passing second, and what he saw made his legs give way from fear. He shouted, his butt hitting hard against the ground.

Right inside the cell was the same guy he saw laying motionless just a second ago, whom he assumed had taken the poison as Mrs Jackson requested and gone for good... Cade, back on his feet.

"W-wait... didn’t you... die?"

Detective Haxton said, "I turned off the CCTV so the medics and left-wing officers would already be on their way now. In around five minutes, they will be here. But if you make the report by yourself, it takes the nearest department one minute to reach."

Cade swallowed his saliva inside the cell, pinning his arm to his nose against the foul scent... from a deodorant with a decayed smell sprayed by Detective Haxton right before this officer arrived.

He could have taken the poison, not having to later empty it, but now it seems he had the chance to protect his grandmother by himself and take his revenge on that woman before he dies.

Revenge for his sister. For Aria and a lot of slain comrades.

That is... if Detective Haxton’s plan succeeds. They had a conversation two days ago.

"Make the report now!" Detective Haxton hastened the officer.

As the report was made, that prisoner 009 died of poison; Detective Haxton then gave Cade a different jar.

Lazarine.

Just one sip of it stops the heart beating for up to three hours, making it seem as though the user were truly dead. It had its own consequences, which Haxton had discussed with Cade before... Yet he still agreed to take it.

All this was to rescue him out of here and do what is needed to begin with.

Cade fell unconscious to the ground after sipping it, and the medics appeared minutes later. They tried defibrillating him, and then used a stethoscope to check his heartbeat...

... But, he wasn’t breathing any more.
