Chapter 37: Bonus (3)
Chapter 37: Bonus (3)
... The hospital’s surroundings was quiet around ward 201, the air carrying the scent of antiseptic. Amanda, crossing her arms, waited just outside the ward’s door for the doctor to come out.
Through the glass lining on it, she stared at the inside — the white-coated doctor was taking recordings and evaluations of a body overly wrapped in bandages, the cable of the beeping life-supporting machine attached to him. He slept in silence — a poor comatose soul.
Soon after the doctor came out, she dismissed the nurse to have a quick chat with Amanda.
Amanda sighed out loud.
Swallowing, she asked, "Is there any assurance of when he might wake up?"
The doctor replied, adjusting her spectacles, "That, if I am being honest, is so unpredictable. This kind of a situation is usually called waiting for a miracle even in the medical field, if you get what I mean..."
"He might wake up anytime soon... Or never?" Amanda asked with a slight hint of concern, the same expression dancing in her eyes.
But instead of the doctor answering to that, she paused for a moment and frankly voiced out, "If you don’t mind me asking, Miss Williams, how are you truly related to this man in question?"
Amanda kept silent.
"Because there are limits to what I am supposed to disclose to you about the patient if you’re just a guardian, perhaps, a co-worker," the doctor made herself clear.
A pleasant, reassuring smile still danced on her face, because she literally wasn’t being hostile towards Amanda even though her word might have come out that way, because she had to say it anyway.
Under the hospital’s protocol, no medical practitioner was allowed to give full details about a patient to any other guardian class outside directed relatives.
"Don’t worry. I don’t need to hear more either," Amanda declared bluntly, causing even the woman to slightly raise her brows. Before she turned to walk down the passageway, she had demanded, "Please notify me if there’s any improvement to his condition."
The doctor had responded, "Sure, Miss Williams."
In the aftermath, Amanda took a lift to an upper floor where she found an elevator next. It brought her to a much quieter part of the hospital, and she made her way quickly into the VIP section.
A bodyguard before a ward opened the door for her, in the next second bringing her to meet the sight of her boss who sat on a couch before the TV.
She for a moment glanced at the sickbed beside which a sturdy table was — she had left the recording pen on it, and it was still there.
Nonetheless, she sighed in relief. "Thank goodness he recovered quickly," she mumbled as she walked towards the much wider part of the ward, which was almost like a perfect living room.
Stopping behind the couch, she asked,
"How’s the palm, sir? Feeling better?"
Kieran didn’t look at her and just raised his bandaged hand. "This? It’s faring well. If you’re gonna ask about the legs next, they’re not that good and I used those..." he pointed at the two walking sticks leaned against the second couch, "...to drag my ass to where I am now."
A sudden question circled in Amanda’s mind hearing that... How was he able to move himself around after getting stabbed and shot here and there? And she even just left the ward a few hours ago that he hadn’t yet woken from coma, so he clearly got up not so long ago.
What a man.
Kieran slowly turned his glance back at her. He asked, "What happened back then? Thought the bad guys were going to abduct me. What went on?"
Amanda breathed out loudly. "Thanks to the gangs you recruited, they were able to hold the guys off for me to get the police to the site when I got the news of you about to be taken away. But... The leader of the gang didn’t make it out so well..."
Kieran injerceted, "What happened to him? The rapist, right?"
"Yes," Amanda agreed, nodding her head. "Sadly, he’s now in coma in this hospital’s intensive care unit.... and it seemed he continually got hit in his head till he passed out, as the doctor told me previously. The rest of the gang are also recieving treatment in the ER."
"Were any of them shot?" Kieran asked.
"No, sir."
Kieran sighed. "God... Why did they have to meddle with that?"
"It must have been a tough decision for the rapist to make to protect you, given the kind of person he is," Amanda spoke up, her tone sharp. "Truly, he’s loyal."
Kieran swallowed his words, turning his glance back to the front. Yes, it was right that the man proved his loyalty as a paid guard, but still, Kieran couldn’t carry the weight of someone else going down for him again.
But, soon, he sighed.
Perhaps, this is the cost the man pays for the lives he had wasted as a gangster and dreams he had shattered either through assault or rape.
Kieran asked Amanda, "What about the others? I mean, Mrs Jackson’s men."
"The police have arrested them."
Kieran exhaled. "Ah, now, that’s interesting. Time to pull the cards then."
Amanda blinked upon hearing that nonchalant remark again. No, this shouldn’t be coming from a half-dead man just yet. He probably wasn’t thinking of going for Mrs Jackson again...
... But the sad truth was Kieran was going to. He pointed at the I-pad beside him, and Amanda stared there only to crease her brows... Displayed on the screen was a search page Mrs Elizabeth Jackson’s net worth — twenty trillion dollars.
Meanwhile, right away, Amanda got the message Kieran was relaying. Comparing the net worths? She glanced at him, who chuckled non-stop.
"Sir, are you....?" she immediately asked.
Kieran cut in, "Yes, I am." He smirked. "Thought all along she was some crazily wealthy dude too. But... Just twenty trillion?"
Amanda blinked.
"Beats me though... I read a news about the empire’s market cap dropping years ago when she withdrew her shares. If she’s still making profits till now, that means her net worth used to even be lower than twenty trillion.
She isn’t supposed to be that influential, given her worth. So, probably, the market cap stayed down because the man they call my father had his eyes on something else back then, that he couldn’t focus on reviving the empire back.... Or it’s part of their godforsaken secrets. Anyways, I don’t care about all those now," Kieran mumbled, eyes stuck on the distant TV.
"Can I take a guess?" Amanda asked, her tone frank. "You plan on buying her company."
Kieran smirked. "... And I get to decide if she makes more profit or not. I can easily bring her company to bankruptcy by being the CEO."
Amanda nodded, though her expression wasn’t the kind that shouts agreement.
Swallowing, she voiced out, "But, sir... Do we have to go such lengths though? That would even force her to hurt more people and..."
"Yes, she would. But not when I give her a reason to not," Kieran declared.
The ward fell silent for a few moments, save for the faint beeping of machines and the inaudible sound of the breeze.
Kieran continued, "The shareholders in her company respect her, but they respect money too. So, she alone can’t decide on whether she sells the company or not. I will become the largest shareholder and put her waiting in the second counter...
So, I tell her, if she doesn’t wish to go down to even the last counter while I bring more people up, she should seize her fire. Maybe she was right back down. Business is both about money and also not. She can’t disagree with me unless wants to start making less profit and even a lower voice in meetings."
Amanda said nothing, probably still thinking about this decision, but since it was what her boss wanted, she must do as he says.
She bowed at him.
"I will prepare the documents and bring the shareholders in her company to notice on the offer. Literally, they will be overwhelmed because your influence alone in a space drives more sales," she said.
Kieran smiled slightly. Amanda soon walked back to his sick bed and took the recording pen she placed there. She wondered if Kieran had seen it or not. But, he hadn’t.
After Amanda left, Kieran finally poured out the rage inside him. The rage of being thrown here and there by that woman, of being read like an open book and played like a fool. He definitely had no idea what business she had with the Chairman — his alleged father — but he doesn’t care.
If he makes no move, Mrs Jackson won’t stop trying to just bring everyone down.
’I will show you just what it means to be a rich motherfucker!’
