Chapter 38: Buying Mrs Jackson’s Company!
Inside the interrogating room of South City Police Station...
A detective sat opposite the captain, a metallic table that bounced off the overhead lamplight standing between them. The man, having ginger beards and earrings on, simply scrolled through some files — he just came inside a few seconds ago, and didn’t say a thing till now.
He hummed as he scrolled the pages, chewing a gum slowly.
One moment, he asked the captain without looking up, "Can you confirm your name for me, please?"
The captain replied in a slow, relaxed manner, "Cade Jones."
"Uhm, nice name there," the detective commended in a low voice, nodding his head and scrolled more and more of the files.
Soon afterwards, he glanced right up and said to him, "Well, I am Detective Haxton. Just so you know, Mister... Jones. I am here just to ask you one or two questions, so we can confirm you’re innocent and let you go—"
"When did I tell you I was innocent?" Cade cut in, tilting his head as he held a stare on the detective.
The guy chuckled two times out of astonishment and surprise... Because, who in the right state of mind would say that?
"Well, are you saying you’re guilty then?" Detective Haxton asked in both slight tease and frankness, smiling at the end.
The captain exhaled silently, squaring his shoulders.
Detective Haxton read from the file a moment later, "So, a week ago in Maytender Constructions, the police caught you up in an act of brutal human assault... And with a reported case of attempted abduction. Together with some accomplices."
Then he looked Cade in the eyes and persuaded him,
"Go on and say it, Mr Jones. Tell them why you’re innocent and who is really behind everything... Don’t mind me putting on my phone’s recorder. It’s just to use as an evidence to help you here, you know. Go on, please."
The captain frowned as he stared at the detective — even a five year old could see through him, and well, it wasn’t as though the detective was hiding it either.
All this sounded like a childish baiting, but would still have given a truly innocent person a chance to express themselves.
But, the captain — Cade Jones — knew all too well what he must do here. He had for long been in the game and must see it to the end before he rots in jail.
Mrs Jackson was definitely not helping any of them out of here — she was going to make them turn themselves in anytime soon and replace them, to begin with.
Cade leaned forward closer to the detective. There again was a childish baiting grin, but Cade said what he had to let out...
"I won’t deny hitting all those men and brutally smashing the head of a particular one of them till he exhausted his last damned breath, just like a punching bag fun to have. Also, it was my aim to abduct Kieran Holland..."
"... Sorry..." the detective cut in, "...for ransom?" then he put down a note.
"I mean, why not?"
Detective Haxton asked, "Well, is there anything else to that? Or just because he’s rich? You know, too rich. Everyone knows that... Ha."
Cade wished he could at least tell him his sense of humour was dry — too dry. But that was none of his concern.
Something else was. This detective’s attitude. It unnerved Cade that, perhaps, he was really easy to read. Or the man was trying hard to be a manipulator... He didn’t get it.
Cade leaned back in his seat. "What are you doing, detective?"
The guy looked here and there, and chuckled slightly. He shrugged. "Trying to help."
"In what way?" Cade queried. "To help get the others responsible to court, assist you as a friend... Don’t give me that shit. I have heard enough of them for ages now."
Detective Haxton raised his brows, and cleared his throat. Drawing a bit closer, he said, "You know, I just think there might be more to the attempted kidnap than just ransom for ransom sake.
Maybe he once duped you... Hired you only not to pay... You know? Just feed me all of it, Mr Jones — no one is above the law, trust me."
"Before I answer," Cade interjected, "have you got any idea what happened on the New Village’s road a month ago?"
Detective Haxton blinked. "What?"
"... The escort supposed to bring to prison the businessman sentenced to death for serial murder charges, have you got any idea how they all ended up?"
Detective Haxton’s chest slightly pounded and he shifted in his seat. Cade snickered, seeing the sudden change in his mood. Once trying hard to be cunning, now the open book he earlier assumed Cade was.
"The businessman.... Are you taking about Mr Stamps?" the detective asked. He chuckled dryly. "I mean, what are you even getting at? What do you mean the escorts... Are dead too?"
Cade smirked.
"Tch... And now, you said everyone is above the law?"
The earbud in the detective’s ears suddenly shrieked up with a loud order from the superior officer outside the interrogation room. Just a transparent, sound proof glass wall with a door stood between them.
The man had ordered, *Stop the interrogation right away!*
Detective Haxton frowned. Why was he asking him to end it now that the accused made mention of the escorts they once told everyone had moved to a different branch, being actually dead?
He rose from the iron seat and walked towards the door. One would have thought he was heading out... But he locked the door instead. Even when the officer yelled over that he should open it, he removed the earbud itself.
Then he walked back to Cade, who sat, back straight. He didn’t even turn back into his seat, but stood, pinning his palms tightly to the table.
Detective Haxton asked in a low voice, "Now tell me, Mr Jones. What actually happened?"
Cade looked at the officer outside the room through the glass wall — shouting, but his voice inaudible. He smirked. So, because Kieran Holland was involved, they made the entire case a secret from everyone else?
But he wasn’t letting that happen. Their final mission had been to commit atrocities and frame things on Kieran Holland, such as going after Mr Stamps.
It was initially to just kill him, such that people start to think his death was probably caused by either Kieran who dropped the charges or the others — because they were Mr Stamp’s direct victims.
But the plan had changed, leading to Cade sparing one of the police and telling him that Kieran sent them to kill everyone.
Cade smirked. Then locked eyes with Detective Haxton...
"I will tell you everything."
Minutes later, Detective Haxton walked slowly out of the room. The officer rushed towards him with a yell, but he ignored him and passed by as though he never existed.
He held his jaw tightly. His stomach churned recalling everything Cade Jones told him.
As he got into the bustling part of the station, his phone chimed with a notification. He pulled it out from his pocket only to see something that made his chest heat up right away.
The just-published news article headline was: *Mr Kieran Holland buys 100% shares in Jackson & Sons Limited! ... With this, he’s now the sole owner and can appoint anyone to work for him!*
Detective Haxton clenched his jaw more. He recalled one of the statements Cade altered...
"... Kieran Holland sends us on murdering missions every time, but last time for Mr Stamps, he paid nothing. That’s why I attempted abducting him..."
To Haxton now, the higher police officers were like dogs awaiting bones from their master — they kept silent even when Cade himself asked the last officer to deliver to them a message. Protecting the rich, isn’t that?
He sighed. "Must be nice for you being at the top of the world. You now even buy companies as you like. Disgusting human being!"
He clenched his fist.
"You just wait... I will make sure I get you arrested with clear evidence myself and bring you down for prosecution!"
