Chapter 36: Bonus (2)
"Why...?"
Metres away from Kieran was a gathering, comprised of the familiar bastard who shot Aria back then, Eve herself beside him, and the rest of his gang spaced here and there across the wide room. The ground was as uneven as earlier, and two braziers lay just behind the captain.
He suddenly dug his hand into his pocket slowly, so that Kieran was almost convinced something bad was coming. That he should try defending himself at least. But in the end, it was something that made Kieran’s eyes widen – the SOS watch.
The captain raised it up and asked, "Would you need this again? You must have gotten here with it, I suppose. Specially made watches have that remote tracking feature."
Kieran frowned again – what does this mean? He could remember Amanda telling him that if the watch is turned off, no features would be available. Now, since the guy knows the type of device this is, he must also have been aware that turning it off would make the tracking feature useless. Yet... he kept it? He made him access it, and... come here thinking he was smart?
Kieran clenched his fist – not clear enough, but deep inside, he was ready for whatever was coming. Because, too bad, he had played right into their game.
"You guys are surely a pain in the ass," Kieran groaned.
But instead of the captain acting in a way Kieran expected, he simply threw the watch, which landed on the ground in front of Kieran and even pushed Eve forward as well.
When Eve looked back at him with teary eyes, somehow wondering what was going on, he said:
"Go on. He’s here to get you after all."
Kieran’s jaw slightly loosened. His heart ached, pounding against his chest. Something about this felt familiar, like a feeling of déjà vu...
"Don’t move!" Kieran ordered Eve right away, and she froze in her tracks.
Now, Kieran got it. This had felt familiar because, literally, the captain killed Aria the same way. Letting it seem as if everything had been settled and making them disconnect their minds from it, only for him to kill her next.
He might be attempting the same for all he cares!
Kieran asked the captain slowly, his voice stressed and a mask of frankness spreading over his face, "...What are you guys doing? What are you on this time around, huh?"
The captain, eyes distant and unmoving, stared at him for some seconds. Then, in a slow manner, he asked Kieran, "Do you want me to keep her, then?"
Kieran frowned more.
"Seems you’re not happy to get her back without any struggle..."
"Exactly my point," Kieran cut in, his tone sharp. "Tell me in a way that makes it seem reasonable. Why would you suddenly change your mind when you made so much effort to abduct her... and try to end her life? She’s one of those who knows about your damned business, and I know so well you aren’t letting her go."
The captain turned his back to walk closer to the brazier and dance his palm atop the simmering flame, clearly ignoring Kieran’s straightforward remark. Some moments later, when he spoke, it wasn’t directed at Kieran, but at the hostage... "You there. Will you stall around for this self-absorbed man to keep dictating to you?"
Eve looked back at the same time the captain did. She swallowed, seeing him hold a red coal in his bare hands.
The captain tilted his head slightly to the left. "Carry on already."
Eve then looked straight up and turned her head down – for some reason, she couldn’t watch Kieran in the eye. She moved on even when he told her not to, but now that she had done so, he couldn’t help but keep his eyes on the bastard. He was the type to pull a sudden move at any time.
As Eve reached Kieran’s side, she looked at him – he saw her do so through the corner of his eye, and he glanced at her too. He almost gasped, seeing the regretful stare in her eyes, as though that was a way of saying sorry.
Nonetheless, he urged her, since it seemed these guys were really letting her go, "Come on, let us..." But right then, the words sank down his throat.
He saw her wrists.
His lips parted, getting a better view of it – all along, she had had those wrists at her back, as though someone had tied them, much like what they would do to a hostage... But seeing everything now, he had been wrong all along. She had literally kept her wrists behind her like that, disguising them, while her hands were actually free!
"What...?"
Kieran looked towards the captain with a questioning stare. But he shouldn’t have—because right as he got his attention away from Eve, she rushed into him with a flick knife in her hand.
Kieran caught that when she was almost about to stab him... His eyes widened. But there was no time to act.
’How... unexpected,’ the words trailed off in his mind. But bracing himself in time, before it was too late, he raised his palm in the knife’s way...
Immediately, with a loud, intense sound, the knife pierced straight into his palm, at least saving him the risk of getting stabbed in the stomach. Kieran jerked backwards away from Eve, who had a strange, raging look as she stared at him. And with the knife still stuck in his palm, the pain multiplied as the captain shot his knees one after the other as well.
"Ah-ah!" Kieran grunted aloud, his body rolling onto the ground. He gritted his teeth through the pain, muffling his cry as he pinned a palm to one knee. He glanced up at Eve, whose head was turned down, tears tapping onto the ground from her eyes.
Kieran then shifted his glance to the captain, who still had the pistol in his hand.
He asked in a stressed voice, "What did you say... for her to have done... this? I guess... letting go of her and her friend... perhaps together with punishing her school bullies. Right?"
His face went pale sooner than expected; yet, Kieran forced that cheeky smile. He hoped he could pull the knife out of his palm, but that would only heighten the pain.
The captain soon reached his front, bent on a knee, and drew out a knife. He raised his brows as he said, "What if that’s it? You’re capable of nothing now to begin with."
Kieran gasped out loud and forced the words, "Cowards. You should’ve come at me directly."
Right at that moment, indistinct steps echoed in the outside passageway, and in a jiffy, Kieran’s men stomped through the curtains. But the sight that met them froze them in their tracks...
"Boss!" the rapist shouted, his eyes filled with concern.
The captain warned, not even looking at him, "Make a move and I’ll rip off one of his fingers. I promise you."
The rapist grunted, taking a step forward, "Keep on yapping, bastard!"
"Try me," the captain said back. In the aftermath, he told Kieran, "We will be taking you with us, Mr. Holland. The madam wants to have a word with you. But... first, I gotta do this..."
Everyone glanced at him.
Then, raising the knife very high in the air, he drove it towards Kieran’s leg. But, despite being gravely injured, there was still energy in Kieran to kick the guy back. The captain thrashed on the ground, but, relentless, he grabbed out a syringe and stabbed it into Kieran’s leg.
After seconds of stubborn struggling, Kieran fell unconscious.
