Chapter 35: Bonus (1)

The wheels of Kieran’s car kicked dust into the air as it drove to a halt at the Maytender Construction site.

He stepped out, his eyes scanning around carefully. Everywhere was silent, and the air was somehow hot, exactly what you would expect in a site where smoke is expelled on a daily basis. Nonetheless, Kieran moved forward, creeping slowly so as not to make a sound.

Just as he was about to pass by a huge drilling machine placed nearby, he pictured someone peeping outside from the window of the building right in front of him, faster than they could have seen him. And so, Kieran hid behind the drilling machine.

’That’s one of them,’ Kieran thought, then peeped back out to see the guy moving away from the window. Thus, before anyone else could find his cover, he sprinted to the rusted metal door of the building, only to find it locked from behind.

Kieran then paced around the house real quick until he found a window. But it was closed – too bad he had to pick up a rock from the debris around and use it to shatter the window.

That was a loud noise there, so definitely, the guys inside now knew an outsider was here. Aware of that too, Kieran quickly jumped straight inside, to a rough-surfaced room where he found a wall to hide behind.... Very close to the open entrance.

As far as he makes no noise, he knew he would be able to catch the movement of whosoever might be walking in the dimly lit passageway. But luck it was, he heard nothing... Kieran had believed that too until he rushed inside the passageway to meet the sight of four figures waiting patiently for him.

Kieran stopped, dragging his shoes to a halt. And the sound made echoed down the passageway.

He sighed and mumbled, "Ah, fuck this shit." And then he pulled off his overcoat, rolling up his sleeve as well. Coincidentally, there was a huddle of metal by his left, in different lengths, so Kieran picked up the shortest rod that was probably the thickest too.

He clasped it tightly in one hand and said to the guys, "...You made me do this. Come on, then."

The tallest and clearly the most gallant of the four guys signaled to the three others, who then rushed towards Kieran immediately. Kieran sighed and closed in at a slow pace – two of them lunged with their rods at the same time, so he could only jerk to one side or get caught between them.

Now closer to the guy on the left, he ducked beneath his second lunge and then slammed the rod into his side. The other one rushed in with a yell, swinging the stick forward while Kieran stepped backward.

He did that four times, only for Kieran to keep on pacing back... till he suddenly ducked forward and wrapped his arms around the guy’s waist. With that, he pushed him to the ground and jabbed his left fist into his face.

"Hey, fucker!" a voice groaned.

Then whack! – a thick metal hit against Kieran’s back before he could make another move, the pain so stabbing he couldn’t move and the one who hit him helped him do that. To move. Definitely not by wrapping Kieran’s arms around his own neck to slowly help him stand on his feet – that would be absurd since they were opponents. But instead, he stamped Kieran with his shoe off the other guy who had fallen unconscious with a single blow.

Kieran rolled over on the floor, shutting his eyes tightly in pain. Then he heard the guy stepping closer. He gently rose up... But it was too late as the dude was even closer. He lunged his kick forward again, but Kieran jerked back, holding himself up by pinning his palms on the rough surface. And now, he had enough time to stand back on his feet.

He chuckled, his back slightly hunched – stiff. "Ah, you’re some persistent bastard, aren’t you?" He chuckled again, held his punches up, and signaled to the guy to come on with a teasing smile. "Try kicking me again, you fucking bastard."

The guy lowered his weapon as he stepped closer with a glare. And in one moment, he aimed toward Kieran’s side. He was clearly an experienced fighter, for not going for the arms or anything else after seeing his colleagues fall by trying the same... But instead, he was targeting a weak point Kieran wouldn’t have expected.

Still, Kieran chuckled. ’Good boy...’ He was more skilled than that.

He didn’t step away from the rod or try sidestepping – instead, he brought his punch forward in the opposite direction to it. One would have thought his fist would hit against the metal mid-lunge, but it didn’t. Instead, it passed right above to connect with the guy’s jaw, just when his own attack could have landed.

The guy yelped as the rod slipped off and he himself jerked backward. Kieran rushed to him quickly, sending a blow into his abdomen and wiping his legs off the ground. With the guy’s face pinned to the stony surface, Kieran grabbed his arm and held it back. Stopping for a moment, he mumbled,

"Sorry about this."

Then he twisted the arm. The bones snapped, and the guy continued crying even until Kieran got closer to the last guy. This one was tall, yes, but that was an advantage.

The guy roared as he dove his fist down, only for Kieran to jerk to the left, drive his tight blow backward, and smash it into the guy’s abdomen.

His body crashed to the ground behind Kieran as he moved on to the veiled entrance. For a moment, he stopped and observed through the translucent nylon curtains. He could see distorted reflections moving here and there, and an orange hue that told him there was a brazier inside, too.

That meant the other guys were probably inside as well.

He extended his hand to pull aside the curtains, but then he hesitated again. His fingers retracted inches back, and he frowned.

He stared back then forward – why does everything feel so straightforward and easy? He swallowed. Quickly, he texted to ask if the gangs were almost at the site too, and the rapist said yes. Then, sighing out loud, he slowly stepped inside...

What lay before him made him question his hunch even more. Why does everything feel very easy?!
