Chapter 170: 009: Despair Hell
A few days later, the Ramos Duchy, Dawn Plain.Dawn Plain is the largest plain on the eastern side of Ramos Duchy. One hundred years ago, the Great Knight Grant began his legendary journey here, sweeping through the east and west, bringing the first rays of dawn to this land shrouded in shadow.
Standing on the slope overlooking the edge of Dawn Plain, Lynch gazed into the distance.
A heavy layer of dark clouds covered the entire sky.
This was an elemental creation similar to the protective clouds of the Shadow Tower, but its composition wasn’t ordinary elements. Instead, it was formed of fear, despair, calamity, and other negative emotions.
Beneath the dark clouds lay countless Skeletons, Zombies, Ghouls, and other Undead Creatures, densely packed and innumerable.
These terrifying Dead Spirits gathered in groups across the plain, forming a circular perimeter that sealed off the entire plain seamlessly.
At the very center of the plain, surrounded by the Dead Spirits, a towering city-state could be faintly seen.
The city walls were built from massive, grayish-blue boulders, riddled with cracks and scars. These were marks left behind by countless battles, bearing testament to the castle’s legendary exploits.
Gwodis.
A city-state named after the Great Knight Grant, the human sanctuary on this land. In the age of wildness, it repelled countless beasts and Demons, providing the people here with a reliable refuge.
Even now, it still sheltered the inhabitants of this land, offering the only hope in this despair-ridden territory, just as its namesake brought hope in the past.
"So they really are preparing the ’Despair Hell,’ huh?"
Gazing at the arrangements from afar, Lynch immediately confirmed his suspicions.
’Despair Hell.’
This was an evil Necromancy ritual mentioned in Richard’s handwriting, which involved collecting human despair and converting it into Spiritual Energy. The energy would then be absorbed to forcefully stimulate the Sea of Consciousness, thus breaking through the barrier between Apprentice and Wizard.
This breakthrough method, uniquely devised by the Shadow Swamp, required the systematic Necromancy knowledge passed down by Wizard Morris. It was a cruel technique unique to the Shadow Swamp for advancement.
Such a method was extraordinarily brutal.
It necessitated creating an environment of despair, where the despair collected from the gathered humans would increase proportionally. Once the despair reached its peak, all present individuals would be mercilessly killed, pushing the despair to its zenith.
The apprentice absorbing this concentrated despair energy would experience unprecedented growth in spiritual power, shattering the final barrier to ascend to the rank of Wizard.
"Looks like this Diego has reached the critical threshold for advancement. Preparing to become a Wizard, huh?"
"Tsk tsk, he truly lives up to his reputation as Shadow Swamp’s top disciple."
As these thoughts crossed his mind, Lynch couldn’t help but recall Morris’s knowledge of Necromancy magic.
Over the years, Lynch had completely mastered the contents of the ’Bloodline Refining Manual’ obtained from Barton. What remained were legacies of magic techniques and spiritual practices.
The one receiving the legacy of magical techniques was this Diego.
"Diego..."
A trace of greed flickered in Lynch’s eyes.
The deeper he delved into Necromancy, the more captivating Morris’s knowledge in this realm became.
Over the past ten years, Lynch had gathered some Necromancy knowledge from other Wizard Organizations, but compared to Morris’s teachings, it was not even in the same league.
At this point, Lynch yearned for the complete tripartite Necromancy legacy with considerable fervor.
"I wonder if there’s any way... to get closer and take a look..."
Calculating silently, Lynch then rolled up his sleeve, activating the magic technique embedded at the cuff.
"Chirp chirp~"
Two crisp chirps rang out as Parker’s tiny head peeked out from the sleeve. Scrambling out with both hands and feet, it climbed up Lynch’s ample cloak to perch on his shoulder, playfully licking his cheek like a little dog.
Over the past ten years, Parker had seen little improvement. Its three-dimensional attributes had only reached around twenty, and its talents hadn’t awakened much further.
It couldn’t be helped—the limit of its bloodline had been reached.
The path of bloodlines was always like this: gaining power was easy, but the upper limit was clear. Once the apex of a bloodline was reached, further growth was almost impossible.
The Fire Dragon Lizard wasn’t exactly a high-tier bloodline, and it typically stopped at Mid-level Apprentice strength. Lynch’s efforts to train it to nearly High-level Apprentice strength were already quite remarkable.
If he wanted it to progress further, integrating a higher-tier bloodline was necessary. Unfortunately, Lynch had yet to encounter any suitable high-tier bloodline compatible with Parker.
"Alright, alright!"
After pulling out two dried lizard legs to feed Parker, Lynch began to get down to business.
First, he cast Light Body Skill on himself, then grabbed one of Parker’s legs, finally commanding Parker to flap its wings and carry him into the sky.
"Flap! Flap!"
Despite being no larger than a small dog, Parker possessed three-dimensional attributes near High-level Knight levels. Lifting hundreds of kilograms wasn’t an issue, let alone the lightweight Lynch, who had the Light Body Skill cast on him.
With Parker hauling him, Lynch slowly flew down the slope toward Dawn Plain. However, instead of flying directly into the area, he circled the edge of the plain, carefully observing Diego’s arrangements, seeking to gather as much intelligence as possible.
As for his plan to kill Diego to obtain the magical legacy, Lynch felt no moral or psychological burden whatsoever.
From a standpoint, Black Wizards and White Wizards were natural enemies. All Shadow Swamp apprentices were listed on the Shadow Tower’s wanted roster. Lynch, being aligned with the Shadow Tower, had every reason to eliminate Diego.
Regardless of such affiliations, Diego’s actions were beyond monstrous. Setting aside the murders of Lynch’s allies, now he was sacrificing an entire city of humans. Killing him could even be considered an act of salvation for the world.
But then, could Lynch actually defeat him?
That was the question.
Ten years ago, there’s no way Lynch would have entertained notions of defeating Diego. Richard’s journal described Diego’s strength as virtually insurmountable.
However, over the past decade, Lynch’s own power had grown significantly, and more recently, his mastery of several High-level Apprentice Magic techniques had reached a stable level. Lynch felt it might be worth a try—even if he couldn’t win, he should at least be able to escape unscathed.
If he didn’t attempt it now, once Diego completed his ascension to Wizard, there would be not even the slightest chance.
"Skeletons... Zombies... Ghouls..."
"Tsk tsk, that’s an overwhelming number. Where did he get so many corpses?"
"Even giant creature skeletons are here... This will be tough to deal with..."
The number of Dead Spirits below defied calculation. A glance revealed countless throngs everywhere—at least tens if not hundreds of thousands.
Even more frightening was that these Dead Spirits weren’t mindlessly standing around. Instead, they were strategically arranged into military formations, digging trenches and constructing fortifications—a fully organized and high-spec Necromancy Army.
"It must have summoned some commanders with military expertise to oversee deployments."
"This is really..."
Lynch’s headache worsened.
After circling the area, he couldn’t locate any weak points to exploit. Should combat begin, the only option would be to force his way through, which would inevitably provoke the countless Dead Spirits to attack.
While the weakness of Necromancy Lies in eliminating the spellcaster to dissipate summoned undead en masse, Diego himself was a skilled user of magical techniques and likely had unknown trump cards. Even confronting him face-to-face might be an unwinnable ordeal.
"It won’t work... Not with my strength alone..."
A Necromancy Army of this scale—already battle-ready—could only be confronted by someone at Wizard Level strength or with an equivalently sized force. Neither option was within Lynch’s grasp.
Wizard Level strength... That was clearly unrealistic.
As for assembling an army...
The materials in Lynch’s Space Ring were insufficient, both in quality and quantity. Moreover, even if he managed to organize a force, there was no suitable commander to lead them. Lynch himself lacked any military knowledge.
"Boom!"
Suddenly, a deafening explosion erupted. On the distant plain, a massive fireball with a diameter of over ten meters detonated, consuming the surrounding Dead Spirits in a blazing inferno.
Following the explosion, several figures charged out from that direction...
