Chapter 79: memories of the past (part 2)

"Your Highness, what are you thinking about?" Questioned Oliver who had been reporting something to Hamon.

Hamon had been gazing moodily outside the window with his arms folded. His crimson eyes lost its focus but turned clear again at Oliver’s question, but he didn’t turn away from the window as he replied,

"Nothing, just some old memories..."

Presently, Hamon’s gaze was turned towards the maids quarters outside the window. He didn’t have many good memories of the castle in his previous life. Perhaps it was only natural, he had a very lonely and unhappy childhood.

From the moment he was born, he didn’t stay at the main palace, but was raised at the maids quarters, because his mother was a humble maid of queen Merona. He had grown up not knowing his father was a king until he turned six years old.

Although he was the first son, no one treated him as a Prince should be treated. They thought of him as a monster, and the son of a low life witch from Greenwood.

As a child, Hamon’s mother was always apologizing to people. Even if the queen threw a cup at his mother, she would bow down and subject herself to the harassment and punishment. He couldn’t understand why his mother was that way when he was a child...But when he grew older, he later found out it was all for his sake. And yet, she’d always apologize to him,

"I am sorry, my son. I am sorry, I have failed you as a mother!"

His mother suffered greatly to protect him. It must had been difficult to safeguard the life of the boy without any maternal relatives in the palace, where plots and scheming were common.

When Hamon thought of it now, he probably survived that far because of his mother.

"My son, no matter who’s at wrong, You should always take the blame. Never breathe a word against anyone in the palace." His mother had said to him once.

The six years old Hamon shook his head repeatedly, "No mother. I won’t do that if am not at wrong. Am not a coward!"

The woman crouched down and stroked his hair, "Listen to me son, the moment you go against any of the royal family, they will take your life...I don’t want to lose you." She instructed with a bitter smile.

"Mama...I don’t want to stay here anymore, let’s leave this place. I don’t want to be the crown Prince." He cried.

He meant it, he would abandon the position a million times over if he could only be with his mother.

His mother wiped away the tears on his face, "Hamon, your life will never be like any other children out there...Because you are special, I made you special. The blood that flows in your veins is special. You belong here, son."

He’d complained countless times to his mother that he didn’t want to be a Prince or have any riches, but his mother would pretend not to hear him.

The turning point in his life came without any warning. One day, out of anger he transformed into a monster. He’d lay in bed for weeks struggling with pain. There were no words to described the amount of pain he went through when he first changed.

It was only then that he realized the change in his blood meant that he was not a normal human being. The sun and moon rose and set several times before he finally changed to a complete monster.

His mother would always tell him that; the blood in his veins was special, nobody would be able to kill him easily. But Hamon thought he would retch. This wasn’t just the blood of a monster...It was a curse! His mother was completely wrong, the blood flowing through his body was never precious.

When the king declared him as the crown Prince, his life completely changed after that the days he saw his mother gradually declined. Then one day she came to him, she looked sick but tried to hide it from him.

"Son, it’s time I leave the palace...I want you to learn to manage on your own without me."

"Where are you going, mother?...please don’t leave me here." He cried.

"I...I can’t stay with you, son."

"No, don’t leave me, take me with you. I promise not to complain about the pains anymore, mother! I won’t cry at night anymore!"

No matter how much Hamon cried and clung to his mother, she only gave him a red half stone saying, "Take this my son, it’s precious. It will guide you, and the half might find you someday...I can’t stay with you. Forgive me." After saying those words, she turned coldly and left without looking back at him. He never saw her again.

The days in the palace became lonely, he wanted for her to come back and put him to sleep all nights, but she never came back. He felt a ching loneliness, even though he lived in the palace. His food would often be poisoned, but because of his so called special blood he’d heal after much pain and struggles.

With death several times, in front of him were smiling faces, he didn’t know who the enemies were, as the entire kingdom itself was against him.

Few years after he grew older, he decided to let the king know, "Father, I have decided to join the war at the border."

"If that’s what you want...You have my permission." The king gave his permission. Ever since then he’d spend most of his years at the battlefield. He rarely came to the palace.

Hamon had a miserable life, he believed that he would live his entire life in misery. Anyone who married such an unlucky person like him would surly be doomed.

After years of being at the battlefield, he felt no more anger, resentment or sorrow. All he had left was emptiness. He had nobody to return to in the palace. He then made his decision to leave the entire kingdom behind. He didn’t want anything to do with the throne or the kingdom that doesn’t care about him. He was cursed anyway with the unnatural blood in him that would forever bring him and everyone close to him an eternal damnation.
