Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 74: Strange feelings
Chapter 74: Strange feelings
The lunch eventually came to an end in a pleasant atmosphere. The worries which had kept Ara up the previous night seemed to have disappeared into the smoke.
"Your Highness, would you care for a board game?" Richard questioned politely.
Hamon nodded, "Sure."
Hamon made to follow Richard to the study room, but halted, then turned to Ara who sat quietly, "I’ll come meet you when am done playing the board game with father-in-law, ok?" He reassured with a smile.
Ara nodded awkwardly, "Ok."
He then patted her head like a small child before he followed behind Richard. It was a simple action but it was loaded with affection.
While Anne and the maids pretended to swoon in the background. But as soon as Hamon was out of sight, they immediately flooded Ara with different questions.
"Sister, you’ve been addressing him by his name the whole time! Do you really love him that much?" Anne gushed.
"Milady, you two are a match made in heaven! You look perfectly together!"
Ara was completely flustered at their enthusiastic reaction.
"Hmm..."
Anne and Maya kept jabbering away that Ara had no time to respond.
"Sister, when the Prince gets back, take him to your room! We’ll bring you both delicious snacks." Anne suggested, but the maid nudged gently, "No, miss Anne. We must not disturb the couple while they’re alone." Maya winked.
Anne quickly understood the signal and nodded, "Oh yeah! We won’t disturb you guys, just take him to your room to spend some time together."
When Ara saw her sister was busy making plans with the maids, she slowly slipped away from them. She’d prepared a fake rough story about when she first met Hamon, but their ways of thinking doesn’t seemed to be helping. She left them to keep dreaming while she made her way to her own room.
But Anne was quick to run after her, "Sister Ara, wait!"
Ara turned her head and find her sister running towards her, "What is it, Anne?"
Ara who was planning to return to her room was suddenly dragged by Anne to a narrow hallway. "What’s going on? Where are you dragging me to?" Ara questioned.
"Hush! I want to take you somewhere, so follow me quietly." Anne glanced around and gestured for her to stay silent.
Ara gave her sister a questioning look.
Anne sighed, "Aren’t you wondering what father and your fiance are talking about? I am curious, Are you not?"
Ara’s eyes widened at her sister’s words. Of course she was also curious to know what they were doing in the study room. To say she wasn’t would be a big lie. She was also worried that her father might say something he wasn’t supposed to.
Hell! She wanted to know what was going on in there at the moment.
Anne seemed to know her sister’s thoughts and resumed with a mischievous smile, "Well...I know a place where we can listen on their conversation without being caught."
"Really? Where?"
With a puzzled expression Ara allowed her sister to take her to the place she was talking about. They moved cautiously, their father was a general and the crown Prince had spent years on the battlefield. A clumsy approach would easily expose them.
Anne took her to a waist high fence, which she swiftly jumped with one hand.
"Waoh! That’s an amazing move, Sister." Anne gushed.
Even to Anne’s inexperienced eyes, her sister’s moves were something impressive.
The study room was located on the first floor and the windows were relatively low. However, with the large windows they didn’t have a place where they could easily eavesdrop without being caught, and there was no saying that they would leave the window open while they had a conversation either.
To the sisters luck, they found one of the small windows to the book sections open, but it was located in a secluded area. Ara moved to approach the small window, but halted her steps and turned to her sister who was finding it hard to keep up.
"Anne, I think you should keep watch instead. You won’t be able to pass through here, I’ll tell you about everything when I get back." She mumbled in a low voice.
"Alright. You promise to tell me everything later?"
"Yes. Now keep watch and let me know when someone is coming."
After Anne nodded, Ara continued to walk towards the narrow hallway that led to the window. She was grateful to Anne for finding such place for her sake. If Ara wanted to eavesdrop she’d have found a place much suitable for herself. Though not necessarily this one. But she hadn’t intended to do so from the start, it was her sister who stoked her curiosity.
She slowly approached the small window and crouched down, before peeping her head up to see inside the study room.
In the study room, Richard and Hamon were seated across each other as they played the board game. Hamon had an amused expression on as he played. He’d been defeating the older man a couple of times now.
Richard laughed, "Wow, you’re good at the game than I had expected, Your Highness."
Hamon sighed, "I’ve never lost to anybody when it comes to playing this game, father-in-law." He remarked with confidence.
"How about we start over?" Richard suggested.
Ara who was at the window could hear their voices clearly. However, no important conversation was forthcoming. Was it really necessary for her to stay there? They were only going to keep playing games.
She was debating whether to leave the place or not, when she heard her father’s stern voice cut through her thoughts.
"What do you like about my daughter? I want to hear your honest thoughts."
Hamon chuckled, "I thought you already gave me the permission to take her anytime I want? Are you changing your mind already?"
"No am not. I just want you to know...Arabella is not suitable to be the crown princess of Findara."
Ara’s expression hardened at her father’s words. Why does he think she wasn’t suitable?!
Hamon narrowed his eyes at the older man, "Who are you to tell me she’s not fit to be the crown princess? Only I decide whether or not she’s suitable to stand by my side."
THUD!
Hamon pushed the board away from his side and sat properly on the chair.
While Ara on the other hand swallowed dryly. Indeed Hamon was a good actor, he’s playing the part amazingly! His act could fool anybody.
Richard sighed, "Do you really care that much about my daughter?"
"The word care is an understatement, I’m driven crazy with desire for your daughter. She’s the only reason am still here in the kingdom."
Ara’s heart skipped a beat. Until now, she couldn’t consider his words to be completely true, but at this moment. She’d seemed to almost believe him.
Hamon resumed, "Ara is not just your daughter, but the crown princess of Findara. You should watch what you say about her, I will not tolerate it even if it comes from my father-in-law. I hope you keep that in mind."
His words were like a spring breeze in Ara’s frozen heart. She clutched her hand on her heart that seemed to beat wildly against her rib cage. This was really a strange feeling, it was something she had never felt before.
It was as if her heart which had been parched like a drought was now suddenly growing a small bud.
Hamon’s voice broke her dazed state again.
"She’s the one I choose, she will be my first and last. She’s the crown princess and my future wife."
Ara slowly glanced to see his face from the window. He looked so serious... Why? She slowly started to take a step back from the window. She didn’t want to hear any of his words anymore. His words were doing strange things to her heart.
Ara finally gave up eavesdropping on their conversation and quickly left the place. Hamon had done a lot for her lately, she’d always thought he was a good choice for the contract marriage. But this time, something was different. for the first time, she really felt like she was being taken care of as a woman...
She’d never felt this way before, it was a foreign feeling to her.
"Sister, you’re back so soon. What are they talking about?" Anne glanced at Ara with curiosity written all over her face.
"They weren’t talking about anything important, so I thought it best I leave before they noticed my presence..." She mumbled.
"Oh is that so?" Anne questioned with disappointment. She’d been waiting to hear juicy gossip from her sister, but it turned out there was nothing to chew on.
"Hmm. Let’s go back inside." Ara was about to walk past her sister.
"Sister...Why do you look so flushed?"
Ara quickly raised her hands to touch her cheeks, "My face is flushed?" She asked innocently.
Anne’s brows furrowed slightly, "Did something happen back there? Did father said something he shouldn’t have?"
Ara shook her head, "Nothing really happened...it’s because of the hot weather..." She reassured.
"Eh? Hot weather? Is the weather in the study room area different from the one here?" Anne glanced up at the sunless sky. It was a windy day without the sun in the sky. So the weather was a little chilling.
Anne glanced back to where her sister stood awhile ago, but Ara had already left when she was busy looking at the sky.
Anne quickly ran to catch up to Ara, "Sister, something is really wrong with you...ah...wait for me, hey!"
Ara went straight to her room to cool her messy mind. She hadn’t slept enough the other nights and it made her exhausted, maybe that was why she’d been thinking too much. The moment she sat down on her bed to gather her messed up thoughts together.
KNOCK KNOCK
The knock on her door interrupted her. She hurriedly straightened up and called out, "Come in."
As the door opened sowly with a creak, she was expecting to see her sister. But to her surprise, it was Hamon who entered.
