Chapter 59: Beware of queen Merona

"I felt a little dizzy back in the ballroom for awhile, but_" before she could finish talking, Hamon had reached out his hand to touch her forehead, then mumbled, "Your temperature feels normal, I don’t think you have a fever." He said as his hand reached down slowly to touch her cheek, but Ara quickly drew back her face to avoid his touch again.

She was distracted at the ballroom when he cupped her cheeks, she had always disliked it when anybody touched her like that, but with him it had felt different, strange, somewhat soothing.

"I don’t like to be touched in that way, please keep your hands to yourself from now on." She said firmly averting her eyes from him.

"So do you expect me to stand and watch you fall?" He asked.

Ara couldn’t see his furrowed brow in the dark as she glanced at him, then continued to say ignoring his question, "And one more thing...Never address me by my name again, I never gave you the permission to do so." She stated firmly,

she needed to set some boundaries between them right now, before he started thinking she felt anything for him. The Prince had been crossing the lines lately, his words and actions had been eliciting strange emotions in her that she had never felt towards anyone before, right now she had a very important mission, she couldn’t let emotions get in her way, and she doesn’t want to end up feeling anything for him when she had a family to protect!

Ara could see the displeased look Hamon had on, but it would be better for him to know this early on that there was nothing between them but a contractual relationship. They were not real lovers for him to address her by her name, she was determined to take this opportunity to let him know her mind.

Hamon’s red eyes suddenly darkened as he registered her words, but he replied in subdued voice, "I see..."

Ara remembered the expensive gifts he had sent to her, now that they were alone would be the right time to talk to him about that. She touched the black diamond on her neck,

"I can’t keep this with me, please don’t ever gifts me such things again. If you’d please take them back, I do_" before she could complete her words, Hamon cut her off by saying,

"Have you forgotten the agreement we made in the restaurant?" He asked in his usual nonchalant tone.

She had agreed to accept anything he sent her without rejection in exchange for the dresses.

"But I never asked for any jewelry..."

"I can see Merek didn’t relay my message to you, Did he?"

"..."

"Alright, I’ll tell you myself...If you don’t keep to your agreement, then I won’t keep mine either. I’ll do whatever I want and you won’t say a word about it...If you agree to that, then go on and return the gifts."

If Ara was the one with the upper hand awhile ago, things were now quite the opposite. She was unable to retort to Hamon’s words.

However, she couldn’t continued to feel indebted to him, she didn’t want to get used to relying on him either. She needed to be more stronger in this lifetime than in her previous life, to be able to defeat Cornell with her own hands,

"I don’t want to be indebted to you anymore...I feel like I owe you more, and I’ll need to pay you back." Ara honestly expressed her feelings.

Hamon smirked, then replied in an obvious tone, "Then pay me back if you feel that way."

"Huh." Ara was taken aback.

Then he continued to say, "If I give you thousands, You only have to pay me back with one, I’m not asking for much from you...just give yourself to me, and let me be by your side, without you trying to push me away." He said softly with a slightly mournful expression.

Ara froze at his unexpected reply. Any normal person would have taken back the gifts. However, Hamon had the audacity to ask her to repay him with herself? What does he even mean by that? Her head was spinning with confusion, but somehow, she had one answer to his words,

’He wants me to pay him back with my body!’

Ara knew this even in her previous life that nothing comes for free. One had to pay it back with something, " I...I can’t pay you back in that way..." She trailed off, then added, "I’ll give you back the money, but I won’t give myself as a payment!" She remarked firmly. What was she expecting from a Casanova! Surely he’d ask for something like this! Ara thought.

A subtle heat seemed to shimmer in Hamon’s red eyes, he was disappointed at her words. Did she really think he was the kind to ask for her body in return for some useless gifts? What exactly does she think of him?!

Hamon opened and closed his mouth a few times at a loss for words, then he finally managed to find a word, "I don’t know what kind of thoughts are cooking in that brain of yours, but I have no intention of making you pay me back in that way...and Am not taking back whatever I’ve given you, no matter what you say."

"I..."

"Hush, you’ll keep whatever I’ve given, that was our agreement. End of discussion."

Hamon seemed unwilling to back down on his words, it was an agreement and she’d have to accept everything he had sent, "Ok. I won’t return anything you’ve sent, but don’t expect me to express gratitude or pay you back, since I never asked for those things you sent."

At Ara’s words, Hamon burst out in laughter. His laughter was pleasant to her ear, but what was funny? Ara looked at him confused, what made him laugh?

Hamon shook his head in disbelief. He never asked her to say ’Thank you’ and wasn’t she the one who felt indebted to him and wanted to pay back? His future wife was really something, she’d expressed her dissatisfaction in her own way, he hadn’t expected such cute reply from her.

"I don’t need your gratitude, because the things are with its rightful owner. It’s all yours." He remarked nonchalantly.

Hamon seemed to think little of the value of the expensive items. However, it was Ara who was more preoccupied with the things.

She’d make her own use of the items then, ’ I’ll need them in the future to make him king!’

Ara had no use for expensive items, but since he was insistent that she should keep the items, they could be put to use in the future, or perhaps sell them to help Hamon gain supporters to make him king just like his other spoils of war.

Seeing Cornell today made her feel all the more determined to never let him sit on the throne again, this time she’d take what was more precious the most to him. Just like the way he had took away her family in her previous life.

The king’s throne! She’d make sure to make Hamon the next king of Findara no matter what!

"I think the Duke might be a big obstacle to you becoming the next king...don’t You think?" She asked with a hint of curiosity in her voice. But Hamon smiled and shook his head,

"No, he wouldn’t. Why does it feel like you seem to think very bad of my uncle? You once told me to beware of him."

He spoke of the night they had met on the battlefield.

Ara nodded, "Yes, because I believe that he will eventually try to fight for the throne since he’s the king’s brother." Ara couldn’t say she knew the event of the future, but she’d still give him a heads up.

"Maybe. But right now, My uncle isn’t the biggest obstacle on my way to become king."

Ara’s brows knitted together, "...Is it the queen?" She knew the queen was the most powerful now, she had placed heavier emphasis on Cornell as he had taken the throne in her previous life.

"Something like that, the queen’s son, My brother Cassius Is the biggest obstacle right now, the queen has full support from the king of Dumbarton."

"Then you’ll be up against the queen in the future for the throne?" Ara questioned.

"I believe so."

"She seems powerful, and it makes me kind of worried..." Ara trailed off.

The queen’s position was more powerful than she thought. Although, Ara already knew that because of Merek’s reports, she had a feeling that queen Merona would become a major obstacle in the future. She didn’t know about the queen in her past life, what happened to her? Did she die? Ara had no idea as she wasn’t up against her in the past, but would another different future unfold now that Merona was in the picture?

She heard Hamon say, "A lot of people will pay more attention to your every move from now on. Even more, after we announce our wedding, I’d like to warn you beforehand...Beware of queen Merona!"

Hamon’s eyes instantly turned sharp, there was a glimpse of anger lying beneath the surface, like a bomb poised to explode.

Ara could sense his anger for the queen. Maybe queen Merona would be the one who she’d encounter most after becoming the crown princess. While the king ruled the kingdom, it was the queen who ruled the household,

’I’ll have to prepare to face the queen for sure.’

Ara spoke firmly, reassuring him not to worry, "Don’t worry, the queen won’t be able to take me down that easily." She turned towards the brightly lit ballroom, and said, "Shall we go back inside?"

It would still be awhile until the ball would be over, and she was kind of worried about her sister being in there while the monster was present. But at this rate they’d stayed outside long enough, the gossip about their relationship would had spread wider inside the ballroom.

"Let’s go back inside." Hamon said with a gentle smile as he held out his hand to Ara, and she took it without a word. He watched her side profile quietly as they made their way back to the ballroom.
