Chapter 57: Watching your every move
Back at Anne’s table, where she was seated with Mary. The both of them had been exchanging letters ever since they had met at the Morrison banquet, they had became somewhat close.
Since Mary didn’t have any friends anymore but Anne, she sat with her on the same table, but Anne had been stuffing her mouth with the delicious food served at the ball, while Mary was only sipping from the wine in her hand.
"Why aren’t you eating, Mary? Is the food not to your liking?" She asked, but Mary shook her head, "No. It’s not the food...I don’t want to eat as I have to watch my diet. I’m trying to avoid eating too much, because I want to lose a bit of weight."
Anne replied with an, "Oh I see." Because Mary wasn’t even fat in the first place to want to lose weight. Who cares about some stupid diets? She’d eat the way she wanted, and nothing would happen.
She picked up a slice of meat shoving it into her mouth while savoring the delicious burst of flavors almost closing her eyes to relish it.
She licked her lips delightfully and was about to pick up another slice again when she caught sight of a familiar person in the corner of the ballroom. She squinted her eyes to look carefully at the person. Wasn’t that the thief she had bumped into in their library hallway? What the hell was he doing in a ball meant for elites?! Not just that, he looked...different, could she be mistaken?
"Are you alright?" Mary questioned as she noticed Anne had paused from eating.
"Yes, am alright." She dropped her fork then stood up from her seat, "Mary, I’ll be right back." Then left the table.
Merek sat alone in a corner watching the activities going on in the ballroom with a bored expression. He wouldn’t be here if the Prince hadn’t ordered him to look after the lady, he didn’t know why he was asked to come when the Prince hadn’t even left the lady’s side for a second, and his other order was to watch lady Tudor’s every move, but the spoiled daughter of the Tudor hadn’t done anything for him to take any actions.
So for now, he’d have to sit around and watch all this monotonous elites activities,
’What a waste of time!’
Merek was about to take a sip from the glass of wine in his hand, when suddenly,
"Aha! I knew it. You thief!" Exclaimed Anne as she suddenly slammed her hands on the table, it was a good thing Merek’s hadn’t sipped the wine yet, otherwise, he might just choke from the shock.
Merek looked up recognizing the annoying sister of the Prince’s fiance. What the Heck was she doing disturbing his peaceful table?!
Anne sat down opposite him on a chair, "If you aren’t a gardener, then what were you doing in my mansion few days ago? Did you go there to steal?! " Anne accused rather than ask. She noticed his dressing, he didn’t look like a poor person in those high class clothing. Then why was he dressed in a shabby robe the other time she bumped into him?
When he didn’t respond she continued, "Did you steal these clothes you’re wearing to blend in with the elites? Did you also come here to steal? How did you even manage to enter the ballroom when you aren’t invited?" Anne filled him with questions, she had recognized him because of his dark side bangs and cold to the bones expression, she could never forget those empty eyes of his.
But what was he doing in their mansion if he wasn’t a gardener? Obviously he went there to steal! Because the suit he wore looked quite expensive! And why the Heck was he glaring at her like that? Was it because she’d caught him redhanded? She returned his stare narrowing her eyes threateningly, it was she who had the upper hand, after all she had caught a thief.
Merek narrowed his eyes at her as well, then said, "Miss. I don’t know what you’re talking about, and it’s not polite for you to just throw false accusations at a gentleman...If you will please excuse me." He stood up to leave, but Anne was quick to block his way.
"Gentleman my foot! Where do you think you’re going? Trying to run away, huh?" She accused, If he thinks he’d escape from her after she’d uncovered his true identity as a thief. Well, he was wrong because she’d expose him! She knew he was here to steal again! She knew thieves like him, they were extremely smart and would disguise themselves differently every time infiltrating places to steal.
"Miss, can you please move out of my way?" Merek said through clenched teeth, he was losing it already, she should be lucky she was the Prince fiance’s sister or else he’d...
Merek’s thoughts were cut short as Anne moved closer to him wanting to intimidate him, "Trying to scare me, huh? Don’t think I won’t expose you, thief." She paused to make an action gesture with her hand, "My eyes would be on you the entire night, I’ll watch your every move...If you make any wrong move..." She made another gesture to her neck that says ’I’ll kill you’ in a dramatic way.
She’d expose him tonight! Heck, he’d rot behind bars! "You better watch your back." She gestured to her own eyes ’My eyes is on you’ to warn again, then turned to leave but to her embarrassment, she suddenly tripped over her dress.
Anne felt herself beginning to fall backwards, ’Oh no! A hero can’t fall in front of the villain!’ Her eyes were quick to shut tightly anticipating to hit her head on the table from the impact the fall would cause.
But with a swift move Merek caught her waist with his strong hands before she could fall.
Anne felt a strong hand around her waist as the person drew her closer, "Ahh." Anne yapped, as she quickly opened her eyes, she was met with a handsome yet dangerous looking face, the man glanced down at her with his lips pulled up in a cold smirk,
"What a clumsy young lady you are, Miss." His deep low voice made her jolt, and she quickly pushed him away from her to stand straight, smoothing her dress.
Merek let go of her waist as she pushed him, and watched as she ran away from him as if she was being chased, he shook his head in disbelief. Wasn’t she the one threatening to expose him awhile ago? She even tried to intimidate him? Just looking at her tiny figure he could snap her neck in a second, she really was lucky to be the sister of the woman he was assigned to protect, and the Prince certainly would disapprove of him harming her, otherwise...
"How stupid." He muttered under his breath.
