Chapter 335: The twins
Chapter 335: The twins
Three years later.
Winter arrived as flakes of snow fell from the sky softly as if it was showering flowers on the ground, one after another until the land of Findara turned white. It was a winter morning, the rising sun cast a rosy hue across the morning sky. Golden fingers of sunlight lit up the scene.
The just-risen sun shone softly on the palace grounds, bringing with it a flurry of early-morning activity. Three years had passed now after Merek and Anne’s wedding, and seven years after the king perished. Findara was still being ruled by Ara, the citizens of Findara lived harmoniously under her command. She was a great queen.
However, no one knew how much pain Ara had gone through for the past seven years after losing her husband, living everyday without him was like a punishment. The only thing that kept her alive through the years was the hope she held on to after he perished, the hope that Hamon would return someday, and also her twins.
Every single corner in the palace held memories of Hamon, everywhere she walked to, it reminded her of the time they’d been together. Everytime she saw how her siblings were living happily with their partners, it would remind her of how fate had deprived her from living with her beloved husband, and she’d feel envious of them.
The last seven years hadn’t been easy for Ara, she’d always kept herself busy with the kingdom affairs and also taking care of Hara and Raha, who were now grown up. Although the twins were only seven years old, but they looked and acted much older than their age.
Nevertheless, Ara couldn’t help but worry about them as well, the twins were coming of age when they’d need the human sacrifice. If only Hamon would return before they started craving for blood, it would have been easier for her. She was finding it hard to even tame Hara, who couldn’t control her anger and would always act on impulse.
Few days ago, Hara had even started learning how to teleport, something even Hamon didn’t know to control until he was an adult. Meanwhile, Raha on the other hand was a very gentle person, he was obedient and calm. His demeanor was so much like his mother, he rarely spoke with people, but his mother and stubborn twin sister.
Just like always, Ara was in her children’s room trying to help them wear their coats. Every once a week, the family all came together in the palace to have a feast, while the twins would have a training session with the rest of their cousins and some of the Lord’s children in the training hall. They all trained under Merek, who was now a father of a two year old boy, Maurin.
For the past seven years, Ara had been surrounded by people who cared and loved her. But despite that, the emptiness in her heart didn’t seem to be filled.
"Let me do that for you, Raha." Ara said to her son who stood in front of the mirror adjusting the belt around his waist, but couldn’t seem to get it right even after five minutes. However, despite the fact that he was finding it hard to do, he wouldn’t allow his mother to fix it for him. To him, he was old enough to dress himself up.
Eventually, after trying so hard, he got it right. The boy sighed in relief as he stared back at his reflection in the huge mirror, his eyes were as green as the finest grass in spring. His silver hair was neatly smoothed backwards, highlighting his young yet already handsome long face. He dusted his coat and turned to his mother with a small smile,
"See, I told you I’m old enough to dress myself up mother. I can do just fine on my own. From now on, you shouldn’t stress yourself... father had told us not to give you a hard time before he left, and so I won’t."
"Yes, mother. Raha is right, we will take care of you until father returns to us." Hara chimed in from the side as she was also trying to tie her red hair into a ponytail.
Ara smiled at her twins, as she was no longer surprised with their words. The twins claimed that they recalled Hamon telling them to take care of their mother before he left that night. Although, Ara had been surprised at first, but then she knew the two weren’t ordinary children, their memories were shaper than that of a human adult. They even said they knew what Hamon looked like.
Tears pooled up in Ara’s eyes as she watched her twins. Sometimes, she’d lose the tiny hope of her husband returning, however these two had been her motivation to keep hoping, as they also believed that he would return someday. But would he? It been seven years already...
"Mother, are you crying again?" Raha walked to his mother who was sitting on his bed with tears pooled In her eyes. He hated seeing her cry. He raised his hand and gently wiped the tears that slipped from her eyes away, "Are you missing father again? Please don’t cry, I will make another portrait of him, so you can look at it everytime you miss him."
Raha had an amazing talent of drawing anything he set his eyes on. He’d made countless family portraits in the palace, including Hamon in the family frame. Sometimes, Ara would almost forget that Hamon was no more if she saw how Raha included him in the family frame portrait.
Ara took her son’s hand and placed it against her cheek, then said,"You’ve made enough of his portraits for me already. I’m content with them. Thank you."
"Don’t thank me mother, it is my duty as a son to make you happy. As long as you’re happy, I don’t mind doing anything for you." He said.
Ara couldn’t help but smile proudly at her son. Raha would grow up to be a gentleman just like Hamon. If Hamon was here, he would have been proud of their son as well.
Hara also chimed in after she had successfully tied her hair in a ponytail, "Mother, don’t worry. I will grow up to be a warrior, I will protect you from any harm. And kill anybody who’d dare to bully you or Raha. And also father."
Of course, that was more like her aggressive daughter. Ara thought to herself, Hara was good with sword at such young age already. And would always fight with anybody, not caring if the person was older than her or not. Although, Ara appreciated it that her daughter knew how to fight, but sometimes the girl could get out of hand if her anger kicked in. especially when she was with her cousin, Daphne, Henry’s and Eadlin’s daughter.
Those two never got along for some reasons. And they’d be meeting today to train together.
Ara glanced at her daughter, "Hara, remember what I always tell you about fighting. And again, don’t go picking a fight in your training sessions. Be nice to Daphne, she’s your cousin, okay?"
"..." Hara didn’t reply and only stared at her mother blankly with her red eyes. She wasn’t the type to make promises. And again, Daphne always gets under her skin, she couldn’t promise not to fight with her today.
When Hara didn’t answer, Ara narrowed her eyes, "Hara, If you disobey me again this time...you will be grounded in your room and won’t be allowed to play outside the snow with the others. Understood?"
"I won’t fight with anybody, but if they bully me again...I won’t spare them." She murmured.
Ara turned to Raha this time, since he was the only one who could control his twin sister’s anger, "Raha, keep your eyes on her, don’t let her fight this time."
Raha smiled, "Yes, mother. I assure you I won’t let her do that. You shouldn’t worry, I’ll take care of her."
Hara scoffed at her brother, before turning to leave the room. Meanwhile, Raha hugged his mother before he ran after her towards their training hall, where their cousins were already waiting.
