Chapter 33: Farewell

Anne stood outside the study room, knocking softly on the door, "Sister Ara, are you in there? I want to talk to you for a moment." Anne’s brow drew together in a frown when there was no response from inside, but she heard something fell, she knocked again, then heard Ara’s voice said, " Give me a minute, let me pack these papers first." "Papers? "I won’t take much of your time, I just want to ask you something...If you’re busy, then I’ll come back later."

"No. Come in, Anne." She heard Ara utter from the study room. Anne pushed the door open slowly, when she got in, Anne was about to complain, but the sight that met her eyes sealed her lips immediately. Anne’s jaw dropped in surprise. What on earth was going on in here? How did her sister do this?

Anne finally snapped out of her shock and uttered in concern, "Sister, if father should see the study room this messy, he would scold you again. How did you mess up his documents from the inner compartment like this?"

After Ara heard Anne’s voice from the outside. She had quickly stood up to look for a place to hide Merek, if Anne should see Merek, she would recognise him since she had bumped into him in the hallway on her way to the library. And Ara didn’t want Anne to know anything about her plans yet. She quickly strode to the small inner compartment in the study room that looked like an enclosed library, where her father used to keep some of his important documents. She swung its doors open pulling some the documents on the floor on purpose, then pushed Merek in the compartment, "Stay quiet." She whispered before closing the door.

She heard Anne said from the outside, "I won’t take much of your time, I just want to ask you something...If you’re busy, then I’ll come back later."

Ara hurried to say, "No. Come in, Anne."

Ara could see how shocked Anne looked on seeing the room messy, and she heard Anne’s concerned words, Ara said, "I was looking for something so that’s why the study room looks this messy, but I’ll arrange the documents back once am done." She then heard Anne say, "Okay, I’ll help you arrange them back." Anne remarked as she crouched down to pack the documents.

"No! let it be, I’ll tell the servants to help me with it later." Ara exclaimed then softened her tone, but Anne insisted, "It’s alright, I don’t want father to scold you, let’s do it together." Anne gathered the papers in her hands and made her way to the compartment. Ara quickly spoke to distract her, "Anne just let it be. What did you want to talk about? I thought you came here to talk about something?" Anne dropped the papers on the desk close to her, and exclaimed, "Oh, I just wanted to ask, Which suitcase you want to take? I want to arrange everything beforehand, since I see you’re busy..." Anne trailed off as she suddenly heard a slight noise from the compartment.

While inside the compartment, Merek was losing it already. He sneered as he heard what Anne came to talk about with her sister. He had thought it was something important, Merek couldn’t believe the lady called Anne had come all the way to the study room to only ask such useless question, when she could have just asked from outside the study room. He rolled his eyes in annoyance. He disliked people who spoke without a valid purpose, just like Anne. She was annoying! Even though Anne wasn’t talking to him, Merek was already getting inpatient inside the compartment, the tiny space was making him feel suffocated but the girl didn’t seem like she would leave immediately just like she had said she would.

Ara saw Anne looking towards the compartment, and quickly uttered, "Let’s go, so we can pack together." Ara quickly dragged her sister, whose attention was still on the closed door of the compartment, she dragged her out of the room in a hurry. Ara nervously glanced back at the study room before she closed the door. ’I hope he finds his way out.’

Henry and the Boxton servants came to see Ara and Anne off, as they made to leave for the south. Henry had a worried expression on his face,

"Brother. Don’t worry about us, it’s only for a week and some days, and we will make sure to come back in good health just like we left." Ara spoke reassuringly to Henry, who still seemed a little worried though he tried hard not to show it, even after adding some additional soldiers to escort them.

Ara turned to address the head butler who was standing next to Henry, "You’re in charge of the mansion for now, I hope you’ll look after the household while am away."

The butler bowed, "Feel at ease. my lady, I will take very good care of the mansion. It would be in good shape." He remarked.

"Thank you, if anything should happen, make sure you send me a letter to let me know." Said Ara.

Anne who was already sitting in the carriage, got off to tug Ara’s hand. She had been sitting in the carriage for a while, and Ara’s farewell doesn’t seems to want to end, "That’s enough sister. We’ll be here forever if you continue to worry about the house...and see how brother keeps adding batches of soldiers to escort us, because he’s worried. We should really leave now before he sends an entire army with us." Anne uttered as she turned to her brother who cleared his throat and glared at her, "I’m not worried, i can’t wait for you two to get going already, so I can have my peace in the mansion." He said with a straight face, as he cleared his slightly worried expression, to his usual emotionless face.

"Don’t pretend brother...I know you’re feeling concerned about us. but don’t worry, we’ll bring you some present when we’re coming back." Anne giggled as she led Ara into the carriage. Before Ara stepped into the carriage, she gave Henry a curt bow. As they stepped in, Anne waved at Henry who was still standing outside, with a little worry now showing on his face, even though he tried to mask it off, it was still obvious. Henry gave them a curt nod.
