Chapter 303: The king in the kitchen
Some weeks passed. And while Henry was busy sending out marriage proposals to some noble households to marry off Eadlin. Meanwhile, In the palace kitchen, all the kitchen servants lined up outside with their heads looking downwards, none of them dared to walk inside the kitchen when the king himself was busy dominating it, to make meals for his pregnant wife.
Inside the kitchen, Ara sat crossed leg on the cabinet with a plate filled with beef steak in hand as she devoured it while watching her husband cook her meal. She had been craving for some fish dishes, and had asked Hamon to send a servant to get it for her, but he insisted on making it himself. Even though she had tried to protest and also tried to remind him that he was the king now, he didn’t heed to her words, instead he carried her to the kitchen, and placed her on the cabinet then gave her the plate of steak to eat while she waited to taste his amazing cooking.
Lately, Ara had been eating food meant for four, the more time passed, the more her bump was beginning to become even more visible. And whenever she was craving for something and didn’t get it, she would breakdown like a child. However, Hamon never failed to give her whatever she wanted. Regardless of the place and time, he would get it for her. Just like now, he was cooking her meal for her himself.
Ara watched her husband with a warm smile on her lips. He was wearing a white causal shirt, that rested loosely on his torso, with it’s sleeves rolled up to his elbow, showing his bulging forearm veins. How could one look this handsome without even trying? She mused. His silver hair was tied behind his head but some few stands were still sticking to his forehead, and she felt the urge to move it away from his face. He causally stirred the soup on the fire, before scooping the soup with the spoon, he took it towards his mouth and blew it to cool it off.
Hamon turned back to Ara, he held out the spoon to her mouth, "Try it and tell me how it tastes."
Ara opened her mouth with an "aah" and she took the soup he fed her.
"How is it?" He asked nervously as he noticed the slight twitch in her expression. He wasn’t an expert, but he knew how to make some certain dishes from staying at the borders. And fish soup was his favorite of all. But he wasn’t sure if his cooking was to his wife’s taste.
Ara closed her eyes as she peeked her tongue out to lick her lips, "Hmm, I like it!"
"Really?" Hamon’s expression brightened up. And when she nodded, he said, "Good, let it cook some more, then I’ll serve you. And also, let me check the grilled fish you requested for." He was about to turn away, when Ara exclaimed, "Wait."
Hamon gave her a questioning look, but she beamed then raised her hand to move the strands of hair from his face, she smoothed it backwards, before saying, "All good."
Hamon smiled then walked back to his cooking. Ara continued to watch him prepare the fish he’d grilled earlier. Her days had been filled with happiness after finding out that she would no longer perish with the stone anymore.
Weeks ago, after they returned from the borders, she had wanted to tell Hamon about the cursed stone, however it turned out Emma had already told him about it, and they had somehow managed to destroy the stone without any problems. Ever since then, she had been able to live her life in peace. Now, she would live happily with her beloved husband and children till the end of time. She would get to raise her twins herself in the future.
Ara beamed as she pressed a hand to her bump, it would only be a matter of a few months before she welcomed them.
"Hubby." Ara called, and Hamon slowly turned his head towards her, "Hmm?" He hummed, and she beckoned for him to come forward again, he gave her a puzzled look, but still went to meet her on the cabinet, where she sat.
The moment he reached her, Ara pulled his collar and drew him close. Hamon’s eyes widened slightly as he was unexpectedly pulled between her thighs, and he quickly raised his hands up to avoid touching her with the hands he used to touch the fish earlier.
Ara wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him even more closer, "My wife, careful with how you’re pulling me, I don’t want to hurt our babies." He said with a small laugh as he could feel his wife’s bump grazing him. He wouldn’t want to hurt their unborn children, and he had also been avoiding hugging her too tight lately.
Ara pouted, "I just feel like hugging you, you’ve been standing in front of the heat the whole time just to cook for me, but it seems the babies don’t want me to hug you tight." She said as she moved back from the hug, since her husband seemed to be afraid of hurting her stomach.
Ara used her sleeve to wipe off the small sweat on his forehead, before patting his cheeks, "Much better."
Hamon frowned, "My wife, was that why you pulled me away from the fish I was preparing?" He raised a questioning brow.
Ara gave an innocent nod of her head, "Yes, you were sweating. So I wanted to wipe it off for you, isn’t that kind of me?"
Hamon sighed, "I want a kiss for my hard work." He shamelessly closed his eyes and pouted his lips expecting Ara’s lips to meet his, but she leaned forward and pecked his cheek instead.
Hamon’s brows drew together as he felt the light peck on his cheek, his eyes flew opened, "The heck, I want a proper kiss here." He pointed a finger to his lips.
"Alright." She beamed then leaned in to peck his lips, but her husband wasn’t still satisfied with that.
"I said a proper kiss, my love."
Ara couldn’t help but press down a smile, "isn’t that a proper kiss?" She teased. But Hamon placed his hands on both her sides on the cabinet she was sitting on, he then leaned down, "Let me show you how to kiss properly." Without giving her time to prepare, his mouth closed against hers, he skillfully moved his mouth on hers, and she parted her lips to give him full access to her mouth.
Hamon tilted his head to the side and traced the outline of her lips with his tongue. Ara wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer, however his hands still remained resting on both her sides to avoid touching her with dirty hands. Even though they’d kissed many times, everytime he tasted her lips, it made his mind cloudy and all he wanted was her. But he had been restraining himself lately due to her pregnancy.
The kiss melted into a gentle brush of their lips and they had to catch shaky breaths as they reluctantly pulled away. His red eyes bored into her green ones, he then smiled warmly, and when he spoke, his breath fanned her lips, "My wife... let’s have the baby shower and baby naming banquet before you give birth." He said softly.
Lines formed on Ara’s forehead, "isn’t it too early for a baby shower and baby naming banquet? I thought our traditions are that such ceremonies should be held after the child’s birth. Won’t we be breaking the tradition of our kingdom by doing that?"
It was true that their tradition had it that the ceremony was to be held after the child’s birth, and no one had gone against it for ages, but Hamon had suddenly declared to hold theirs before the child’s birth. She wondered why the hurry when they had all the time left in the world after her children’s birth.
Hamon didn’t immediately reply, he stretched his hand and took the towel hanging on the wall behind her, he wiped his hands clean as he said, "I’m the king, and I can change the tradition. So don’t worry about that." He flashed her a smile.
"But what’s the hurry? We can wait after I give birth, we have a lot of time after that." She stated.
Hamon momentarily paused his movement, but then resumed to wipe his already cleaned hands, "You never know what the future holds, my wife. Sometimes it best for one to do things than wait for the future one isn’t certain of. It’s best we hold it sooner than later..."
Ara gave him a puzzled look, "Why are you speaking in riddles again? I really don’t understand what you mean by not certain of the future... didn’t Emma say the stone has been destroyed and we have nothing to worry about?" She questioned, this wasn’t the first time Hamon had been speaking about the future in riddles, and it was starting to worry her even more now that he decided to hold the ceremony before the birth of their children. Was he keeping something from her?
Hamon simply grinned, "Don’t worry about that again, my wife. You will live long and raise our children, that is certain..." He caressed her neck with his thumb, "I just want us to hold the ceremony before their birth. If you don’t like the idea, then we don’t have to do it."
Ara shook her head, "No, it’s alright. I don’t mind as long as it’s fine with the officials, we can break the tradition and hold it sooner."
Hamon pulled her into his embrace again, "All right, we will hold the ceremony in two months from now. At least I will get to name my children on that day..." He mumbled against her hair, and Ara wrapped her arms around his waist. "Of course, even if we held it later, you can still get to name them." She smiled.
However, a bitter smile played across Hamon’s lips. His red eyes were filled with emotions, which he couldn’t share with anyone yet, he tightened his hold around his wife.
’I am sorry for not telling you the truth, I hope you will learn to forgive me in the future...’ he closed his eyes as he continued to hold her in his embrace.
