Chapter 296: She left!
Chapter 296: She left!
A long line of horses gallopped their way into the Boxton mansion. Leading them was Henry with a tall gait as he pulled the horse’s reins to a halt, then elegantly descended the horse.
"Welcome back Lord Henry, Congratulations on your triumph in battle." The line of servants awaiting to welcome his return echoed upon his arrival.
Such a welcome was something he was used to, which always happened everytime his father, the general returned victorious from battle, there was always a subtle celebratory air in the whole mansion where the servants jubilated, along with a hearty celebration that usually took place in the whole kingdom.
Nobles would celebrate lavishly on gaining both freedom and victory, for had the kingdom been conquered by other lands, all the nobles would fall into a terrible state and might even end in slavery, while the commoners also did a small celebration of their own in the heart of the city.
It was a great pride for every servant working in the Boxton mansion, for every victory their masters brought, their names would also be elevated to the outside world, therefore, the servants also organized a small celebration in the Boxton mansion which Richard had never had an objection to.
Henry wasn’t surprised at the celebratory air he was welcomed with, however, he merely hummed at their enthusiastically welcoming words. A lot had happened during and after the war, not only had the battle itself been hectic, where they almost lost had Hamon not made a timely arrival, he was also later plunged into a momentary heart plunging despair when that soldier had announced his sister’s death. Words could not describe the amount of relief he felt when she suddenly returned, he wouldn’t have known what he’d do if his sister had actually died.
"How is father’s health lately?" Henry asked Jacob, the mansion’s Butler, who was actually in the fore front of the line of servants that had come out to welcome him.
"The Lord’s health is a lot stable now, his wound is well on its way to fully healing, the physician says he just needs to rest constantly." Jacob reported sporting a mini bow to the waist as Henry walked past him into the mansion.
Though he was completely exhausted, Henry first headed to his father’s chambers to check up on his health, when he fully confirmed Richard’s health was indeed stable, where he could already move around without support, Henry sighed in relief, though he definitely didn’t expect to still meet his father bedridden in the first place considering the man’s rigid nature, he was certain that regardless of the severity of his wounds, the man would still stubbornly get out of bed regardless of any warnings from the physician.
After Henry left his father’s chambers, he strode across the hallways towards his own chamber, far south into the mansion. The Boxton household had become quieter lately, missing the energetic enthusiasm of Anne.
Henry paused his steps as his eyes fell on the shut doors of a certain room. First it was Ara’s absence after her marriage, though everyone outwardly continued their lives, her absence in the mansion had been greatly felt, there was no denying that Ara had acted as the household mistress that the Boxton mansion lacked, she’d taken the heavy responsibilities on her shoulders, and took care of everyone in the mansion, even their father who always pretended to be unperturbed by anything evidently still missed her presence till this day.
Now it was Anne, his bubbly and energetic little sister who always made everything lively. Henry let out a small sigh through his lips. They grew up so fast, and now they have become women who can no longer continue staying in their father’s house. However no matter what happened, they would always remain the proud daughters of the Boxton household, his beloved little sisters.
As Henry took a step to continue walking away from where he was standing, he suddenly paused, his brows drew together as he suddenly swung his head up towards the door of the chambers once again.
"The princess." He whispered under his breath.
How could he forget? The fact that Eadlin was still at the Boxton mansion had completely slipped his mind due to all the stress from the battle, his father’s injury, and his sister’s supposed death that had thrown him off balance.
At this moment, a few maids carrying some dishes on a tray came to walk past him greeting, "Lord Henry." Before they walked past him towards the room.
Maya noticed him standing there and paused to say, "Greetings Lord Henry."
"How has she been?" He asked softly, recalling how pained she had looked the last time he’d seen her. And also asked her to be his wife.
"She’s not been eating as usual, and she’s been locking herself in," Maya reported with a small sigh. It was hard for the maid to coax the princess into eating everyday, sometimes Eadlin would just be found staring into space without saying anything. The only time she spoke, was when she once asked if they had found lady Ara, and after that she returned to being mute. Maya mused.
"Why haven’t you been trying to get her to leave her room, I told you to take her on walks or shopping at the shops in the city." Henry rebuked sternly.
Maya quickly bowed, "Am sorry Lord Henry, but she refuses to come out, I have tried to convince her to go out so many times but the young lady is adamant."
A frown drew Henry’s brows once again, as he looked over at the shut doors where the maids holding the food trays were still standing, knocking on the doors to receive no reply from inside.
He wordlessly strode over, the maid’s all shifted to the side creating space for him by the door.
"Your highness, please open the door." Henry called as he knocked, however, he was met with a still silence from the other side.
"Your highness?" He called again, this time when the silence came, his eyes narrowed subtly, he turned to the maids,
"How long has she been in her room?"
"Since last night, I’d only seen her at noon, but when we came to serve dinner, the young lady refused to open the doors, we’d left since we thought she must be asleep."
Henry gazed at the trays of breakfast the maid’s had brought, then turned back to the door.
"You have to eat something your highness." Still receiving no reply Henry sighed then said, "I’m sorry your highness, but I’ll break open the doors if you still refuse to open up."
He hesitated for a few seconds, still getting no reply. With a single kick the doors burst open, however, to his utter surprise, he was met with a tidy, yet empty room.
"My lady." Maya walked in behind him to call, but Eadlin was nowhere to be found.
Henry’s gaze fell on the bathroom behind the dividers in the room, he made a head gesture for Maya to check the bathrooms, since it was still a lady’s chamber and he had to show a level of respect.
Maya rushed out a few seconds later, "She’s not in here lord Henry." Panic written all over her face.
Henry didn’t need to be told twice to know what that meant.
Eadlin left in his absence.
His handsome face still retained his usual level of calmness, however internally, an uncertain panic was budding.
"Tell Froylan to gather all my guards." Saying this he turned around and left the room with long strides.
’Why didn’t she just listen to me? I have told her to stay and yet she left in my absence.’
