Chapter 294: She’s hiding something
By the time the sun set, the king’s procession finally arrived in the town of Findara. On the sides of the streets, were dozens of commoners lined up to welcome their heroes from the battlefield. They all bowed in unison as the royal carriages drove past them,
"Welcome back, your royal majesty!"
"Welcome back, your royal majesty!"
Ara peeked her head through the carriage window curtains to watch the people of Findara. Some were happily cheering, while some were showering flowers on their carriage. On one side of the streets, were a bunch of little kids wearing sack armours with wooden swords in their hands.
Ara couldn’t help but smile as she noticed one of the kids wearing a silver veil over his hair, and the other one beside him was a girl who also wore a red veil over her hair. The children were trying to imitate Ara and Hamon. Since words had spread of Ara being the one to stop Cornell, and Hamon leading the army to victory.
"Long live our king and queen!" The crowd cheered even louder as they saw Ara peeking through the window. She then waved at the people with a wide genuine smile.
The royal carriages finally walked through the palace gates blocking the voices outside the gate. Ara sighed in relief as they’d finally returned home. On their way back, Hamon had insisted they spent the night at some inn for her to relax, but Ara did not want to waste anymore time as she was eager to meet Emma to hear the results of the stone.
After the royal carriage stopped, a few soliders approached the carriage, and knocked gently on the window, "Your Majesty, we have arrived."
"Mhm." Hamon hummed in response, then opened the door to step out first, before reaching for Ara. She slowly took his hand, and walked carefully down the steps.
But as soon as her feet touched the ground, Hamon swooped her up in both his arms, and carried her bridal-style. It happened in the mere blink of an eye. Ara opened her mouth in astonishment as she jerked her head towards Hamon.
"H-Hamon...!"
"Hmm." He hummed, "it’s safer for me to carry you to our room, I don’t want to risk the case where you lose your footing and fall in your condition." He remarked nonchalantly as he walked causally towards the entrance, not paying any heed to the several pair of eyes on him.
"I am not that clumsy, I can walk myself...and I might be too heavy now for you to carry me."
Hamon scoffed, "Does your husband look like a weak man who can’t carry his pregnant wife?"
Of course not, it wasn’t the first time Hamon had held her in his arms before, and she knew how safe she was in his arms.
However, the gazes of the surrounding servants and soldiers were all on them. Their eyes seemed to be envious, but she could not help but feel embarrassed to be the center of such attention. Hamon had also stopped the procession just so she could take her medicine earlier, and word had begun to spread amongst the soldiers that the king was spoon-feeding his wife, and sometimes even mouth feeding her medicine.
It was a rare thing, since no king in history had ever paid this much attention to their wives like the current king was doing to his wife.
"Hamon...what if your subjects begin to look down on your authority for doing this?"
"I dare them to."
Although, his reply was curt, Ara grasped the nuance behind it. She knew her husband’s personality well, and gave a small chuckle, she could read Hamon without him having to say much.
"I can see you are enjoying this, hubby." She giggled.
Hamon’s eyes brightened up, "I like the sound of that."
Ara’s eyebrows drew together, "Sound of what?"
"Hubby, call me that from now onwards, my wife." He beamed.
Ara smiled, "...you are spoiling me too much by carrying me around and also feeding me, hubby."
"My heart wishes to do more than that for you, my love. I want to pamper you for the rest of our lives."
"...but what if I get so used to it?" She asked.
Hamon casually shrugged, "I don’t mind that. Considering what you’ve been through lately, nothing I do would be enough, my wife. I want to do everything for you. So let yourself be spoiled by me."
His wife had been kidnapped while being pregnant, and her body had suffered many hardships. He wanted her pregnancy journey to be healthy, he did not want anything to go wrong. And after Ara’s words in the carriage about women dying while giving birth, it had brought some unknown fear to his heart, he did not want to lose his wife through childbirth, if that should happen, which he wouldn’t let happen...he did not know what he might end up doing to his own children in the future, knowing they were the reasons he lost his beloved wife.
He cared about his children as well, but his wife comes first before anyone else.
As soon as Hamon entered the palace, all the servants looked in wonderment before quickly bowing their heads in greetings, "Hail your majesty!"
Hamon simply walked past them and walked through the corridors that leads to their chamber. When he finally arrived at their chamber, he used his leg to push the door opened, then made towards the bed. He carefully placed Ara on the edge of the bed.
Hamon got down on one knee, then carefully lifted Ara’s dress up to her knees, before taking her feet to remove her shoes.
Ara’s green eyes widened at her husband’s unexpected gesture, "Hamon, you are the king, not my servant. Get up!" She quickly tried to pull her feet away from his hands, but he held it firmly, then glanced up at her, before flashing her a warm smile making his dimples pressed in on his cheeks,
"Please allow me to take care of you myself from now on."
"But_"
"What’s wrong with a husband taking off his wife’s shoes?" He raised a questioning brow.
If they were ordinary couple, then it was alright. But Hamon was the king of Findara now. He couldn’t kneel in front of his wife for any reason. He had done it before, but he was only a prince at that time, if he was seen by anyone else now...
Ara hurriedly reached out and grabbed Hamon’s shoulder, as he began to massage her feet now, he looked up at her, and she looked straight into his eyes, then said, "Hamon, don’t you think if anyone saw you massaging my feet they’d cut down your royal authority?"
Hamon simply grinned,"You are forgetting one fact, my wife. Your husband is so scary that no one would dare talk about me that way, for the fear of losing their limbs."
"But what if they talk behind your back?"
"Have you forgotten I’m not the type to give a damn about what people say about me. They can talk as much as they want, for all I care, you’re my wife and I’m not doing anything wrong." He causally continued to take off her other shoes, before massaging the feet again.
He then leaned down to press his hot lips on her exposed knees, sending shivers down her spine. He looked up at her, "Whether I’m kneeling in front of you, or walking shoulder to shoulder, it won’t change the fact that you are my world, Arabella."
"..." Ara was momentarily speechless. She had worried about king Hamon’s reputation, but it seemed like he did not even care about his own reputation. And did not realize his words alone could evoke such feelings in her. They were too sweet...to the point where it felt like she’d melt.
Hamon resumed to speak, his red eyes glowing hotly as he stared at her, "You gave me the reason to want to live everyday, and it would be unfair if I don’t do this much for you. I want to cherish you. You are obligated to accept as much love as I give you."
"...what would you do if I ceased to exist in the future?" She muttered in a voice barely above a whisper. And Hamon who was busy massaging her feet glanced up with a questioning look, "Hmm? What did you say?" He asked.
Ara quickly smiled and changed her words, "I said, I might not be able to adapt in the future if you stop pampering me."
Hamon beamed, "Is my lovely wife worried that things will change in the future?"
Ara nodded slowly. He then said, "Then please, don’t worry, I will do even better in the future."
At his words, Ara could no longer hold back anymore and she threw her arms around his neck and flung herself in his arms. Hamon caught her in his embrace. Even though he was the king now, her husband hadn’t changed at all since she met him. He would still remain loyal to her, and right now, it hurt her even more that he cared this much for her.
Even though she had tried to suggest he gets another wife Incase things went wrong in the future, but Hamon had said in the carriage,
’If I, Hamon De Biville ever takes another woman as my wife, may the heavens rain hell on me!’
If it was before, she would have been happy to hear those words, but now that she wasn’t sure about her future, it scared her to no end. She wanted to run to Emma right now to confirm the results, but again she was terrified at the same time to hear the results of the stone.
"... Hamon, I want to take a nap for awhile, can you stay with me until I fall asleep?" She requested with a small voice.
Hamon agreed without a second thought, "Sure." After saying that, he swiftly switched their position, he flung himself on the bed while still hugging Ara. She lay her head on his chest, while his arms were wrapped around her body.
Hamon drew up the blanket to cover them both, "Are you comfortable?" He asked, and she nodded her head, "More than comfortable..."
He drew her body closer to his. Ara knew deep inside that these moments might not last if she immediately went to meet Emma to find out the results, hence, she wanted to stay in his arms, before sending for Emma and also telling Hamon about it.
Ara closed her eyes as she was unable to control the overwhelming anxiety running in her mind. She thightened her hold on Hamon and adjusted her head on his chest. She did not realize she was this exhausted until she fell asleep a few minutes after closing her eyes.
Hamon continued to hold his wife even after she had fallen asleep few minutes ago. He had a blissful smile on his face as he also prepared to take a short nap instead, but the moment he closed his eyes, he heard Ara mumbled something.
Hamon looked down at her in his arms, "My silly wife... sleeping like a baby, what are you saying?" He mumbled as she continued muttering words in her sleep.
Hamon’s brows snapped together as he felt wetness on his chest and realized Ara was crying in her sleep. He moved his ear closer to hear what she was muttering,
"... please...no... Emma. Don’t let me die...you have to destroy the stone before it takes me away...I don’t want to leave my... please, no..."
Hamon’s frown deepened. What was she talking about? What stone? Something wasn’t right, and his wife was hiding something from him. He had suspected something to be off with her lately. First she had asked him to take another wife, when he knew her to be aggressively jealous. One could tell from what happened to Claire back then. A few times, he caught this saddened look in her eyes as she gazed at him, other times she would be gazing out into space.
He had thought to take it slow at first, then he’d have her open up to him and tell him the problem, but with how she had been acting, it was highly unlikely she would tell him.
Emma? Hamon thought, she had mumbled Emma’s name in her sleep, could Emma probably know something about it?
He glanced down at Ara’s sleeping form in his arms. A deep look of suspicion clouded his eyes.
