Wife of The Demon Prince
Chapter 260: Cassius’ death

Chapter 260: Cassius’ death

After the battle and the crown Prince’s victory. Some of the high ranked soldiers and officials gathered in the largest hall of the throne room. The hall was filled with voices as the people recalled stories of the battle amongst each other.

"His highness, the crown Prince has arrived!" The herald announced Hamon’s arrival in a booming voice. And everyone stopped talking and turned towards the entrance, they all bowed in respect. Sounds of shifting metal armour resounded in the hall as they bowed, "Hail the crown Prince!"

Hamon proudly stepped inside the throne room, he no longer had his armour on, but a loose white shirt, which rested causally on his torso, with black trousers, his silver hair poured down his shoulders, and swayed as he walked inside. Right next to him on the right, was his wife, who was also dressed in a black matching loose shirt and trousers, meant for men. Then behind them, Oliver and Merek followed closely like shadows.

However, most of the people present in the throne room, couldn’t take their eyes off the crown Princess after witnessing her performance in the battle. They were all aware that general Richard did not approve of a woman carrying a sword, so it had come as a pure surprise when they saw her fight. They never had any hint that she possessed such skills before.

With everyone’s attention on them, Hamon and Ara walked through the room. Hamon’s confident footsteps echoed on the marbled floor as he stepped onto the raised platform on which the majestic throne sat, he finally stopped right before the golden throne. He gazed at the throne for some time then turned around and causally sat himself on it like it was a normal thing to do.

The people present in the room were all taken aback by his action, according to standard practice, the crown Prince can not go anywhere close to the throne not to mention to sit on it before the coronation ceremony. However, none of them spoke any word of protest and simply bowed to the new king.

"Hail your majesty!" The voices of the people echoed in the hall. Indeed, the king of Findara had been decided and would not change even if the sky was falling.

Hamon looked down at the assembled officials and soldiers, "Does any one have something to say?" He asked, knowing some of the officials were still not happy with him taking the throne. However, no one stepped forward to voice their protest. As they wouldn’t want their heads rolling on the floor.

When no one stepped forward to speak, Hamon continued, "Since nobody has anything to say, let’s get on to discussing on how to fix the damages done in the battle."

Soon, they began to discuss on how to clear the damages caused by the battle, and also the numbers of lost lives, and number of casualties. Hamon had returned immediately after killing the queen, however he had sent some men to look for Cassius. Cassius was still a criminal, and Hamon had no intentions of killing him, but to lock him back in the dungeon where he was supposed to be.

After discussing about the damages and how to fix them. Hamon asked, "isn’t there any news about Cassius yet?"

At his question, everyone in the large hall simultaneously fell silent, but one of the soldiers stepped forward, "Your majesty, I have sent men to look for him, but they haven’t returned yet."

Hamon hadn’t told anyone of the queen’s death, but his wife. And judging from the fact that nobody asked about her, he could tell some of the people present in the hall must have have known she was already dead. However, even if Hamon hadn’t killed her, Merona would be executed anyway for killing the king. Thus, he had killed the queen instead.

A heavy silence followed when Hamon didn’t say anything after the soldier’s report. The people kept their mouths firmly closed for the fear of retribution from the new king. They wouldn’t want to offend Hamon now that he had sat himself on the throne.

Hamon’s eyebrows furrowed deeply at everyone’s silence, before he could speak, all the people in the hall went on their knees as they misunderstood his furrowed brows to be anger, "Your majesty, please have marcy on us. We will help search for the second Prince if you wish to find him as soon as possible!"

Hamon exchanged looks with Ara who stood next to him. What was wrong with the officials? But Ara shrugged.

The officials were familiar with Hamon’s violent tendencies and they broke out in nervous sweat when Hamon still didn’t speak. They’d witnessed before how his young self could easily set things on fire when he got angry, and right now they assumed he was angry because the soldiers couldn’t find Cassius.

"We are sorry, Your majesty! Please spare us!" They pleaded with their heads kissing the floor. Only Oliver and Merek remained standing amidst the crowds in the hall.

Hamon stared at the officials with a hopeless look, he sighed heavily. However, before he could open his mouth to speak, the door to the hall suddenly burst opened, and a soldier ran inside with a worried look,

"Your majesty! We have found the body of the second Prince outside on the castle bridge!"

"Cassius’ body was found?" Hamon’s red eyes flashed with surprise. He hadn’t ordered his brother’s death, only his capture. How was he dead?

Hamon wasn’t the only one that was taken aback by the news, everyone in the hall glanced at each as they rised to their feet in surprise. The second Prince was dead? Who killed him?

Hamon quickly regained his composure and spoke again, "What was the cause of his death? What is the state of the body?" He asked the soldier who reported the news. But the soldier looked hesitant for some time before he finally opened his mouth to speak, "Um...The body was disfigured beyond recognition, that we almost didn’t identify it as the second Prince. The eyes were missing, even the tongue...And All the limbs were cut in two halves..."

Following the soldier’s report, the hall was filled with the stunned murmuring of voices. The second Prince was not just simply killed; he was deliberately and cruelly murdered by someone. It was clear he must have suffered terrible torture before his death with the state of his body.

Hamon’s expression darkened, ’Who the hell would do such a thing to Cassius...’ his thoughts trailed off as an image flashed to his mind. It was the image of the person he had put on the top of his to kill list.

Cornell! ’That bloody bastard!’

Hamon looked down towards Oliver below the throne, "Oliver, where is Lord Cornell at the moment?" The last Hamon heard, Cornell was staying somewhere in the palace.

Oliver replied immediately, "Oh yes, I was going to report it to later, but since you asked...Lord Cornell has left the palace hours ago." Oliver had no knowledge of Cornell’s plans of rebellion, therefore when he saw the man leaving with his entourage he did not care to report it immediately nor try to stop them. And he wondered why Hamon was suddenly asking about him, when they were still trying to figure out who killed the second Prince at the moment.

Hamon saw Oliver’s puzzled expression, but then didn’t explain further. His eyebrows furrowed deeply again, "...He is one step ahead of me." Hamon’s gaze shifted to his wife, standing next to him. He could see the anxiety in Ara’s expression, of course she’d be worried after what the man had made her go through in their previous life. He took her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze, and when she glanced at him, he offered her a nod of assurance.

They were the only ones who knew Cornell would start a rebellion in the future. Hamon knew if anyone had found Cassius, they would have brought Cassius to him first, so they could receive favor from the new king. And even if someone wanted to kill Cassius, they wouldn’t have done it swiftly without being caught by his soldiers. The motive for killing, the cruelty of the torture, there was only one man who could do such a thing. It was Cornell.

Many people knew of the conflict between Hamon and Cassius because of the throne, but none knew that it was three-way, including the late king’s brother, Cornell. It was not difficult to know that their uncle was responsible for Cassius’ death.

And Hamon knew Cornell would come after him next. Thus, he had to be prepared for the worst as no one knew where the man had gone off to all of a sudden.
