Chapter 257: The queen’s end (part 1)

Merona anxiously paced around in her chamber, she could no longer keep up with all the bad news flooding in on her just in one night. At first it was reported that her brother, Edwin had been killed in the battle, then about the crown Prince’s soldiers being released. She hadn’t expected Hamon to overpower her overnight. He had attacked unexpectedly. If only he had given her a little more time before he attacked. She would have made Cassius king already.

Just two days more before her son’s coronation day, but Hamon had ruined it for her again! That bastard had been a pain in her throat right from the start.

’...He should have died in his mother’s womb, but the bastard had survived somehow!’

If there was one thing that still surprised her till today, it was how Margaret had lived to give birth even after the toxic poison Merona had fed her while she was pregnant with Hamon.

Merona recalled when she had first found out Margaret was pregnant with the king’s son. It was something she’d never expected. Margaret had been her handmaid ever since Merona got married to Frederick, however she had never once liked the woman then. Her beauty was so rare, despite being a maid, she still had such beauty that could put even some elite women to shame.

Nevertheless, Merona had never known the king had been having a secret affair with the maid even before he got married to her. If she hadn’t eavesdroped on their conversation one night, she would have never known the maid was even carrying the king’s child.

Merona had confronted Frederick after eavesdropping on them, but then he didn’t deny it and admitted being the father of the child the maid was carrying. She had felt betrayed and angry to the extent she had almost beaten Margaret to death, until Frederick came to stop her.

’Your majesty, how could I accept such unfairness. A mere maid will carry your first child before me! I won’t accept this, never!’ She had snapped at the king when he pulled her from beating Margaret, who was already badly injured and was weeping on the floor.

’Enough Merona. It was a mistake, and since it has happened, you will have to accept it. I don’t care what you will do to the maid, but don’t touch her while she’s carrying my child. I’ll only take responsibility for the unborn child.’

Hearing what Frederick had said then, Merona began to plot her scheme of how to kill two bird’s with one stone. She would kill both the maid and her unborn child. That bastard would never be born to this world while she was alive! She had sworn to herself.

Merona agreed with Frederick not to lay a hand on Margaret while she was pregnant, and promised to take care of her until she gives birth. However, Merona had her own plans, she apologized to the maid, and Margaret was too naive enough to believe Merona and even trusted her to the extent of letting Merona handle all her pregnancy medications.

Through that, Merona made a toxic poison that would slowly kill from the inside, it would melt ones intestines slowly until the person died. She added the poison into Margaret’s daily medicines. She made sure the maid drunk the medicines in her presence every single day.

Margaret began to fall sick, her sickness became worst each passing day. The poison began to take effect when she was six months pregnant. However, Merona had been surprised the child survived to six months with such potent poison. Nevertheless, she continued to feed her a double dose of it.

When Margaret’s sickness worsened to a point where she coughed out blood any time she tried to speak. Merona told the king that the maid had been infected with some kind of a deadly disease, and if they didn’t send her away, it might start to affect the others and spread wide. Frederick had believed her after seeing Margaret’s condition.

Merona then suggested to Frederick that they lock up the maid until she died from her own disease, because the child she was carrying might have died in her womb anyway, so there was no use keeping her around. And Frederick agreed to it then, he ordered his guards to lock Margaret up in a basement until she died and got rotten there, and that nobody should ever open the basement ever again.

But who would have thought the maid was a witch. Unfortunately for Merona, months later when they thought Margaret must have been dead and maybe her body had even decayed in the basement. But then they found her with a child, Margaret gave birth to a healthy child inside the basement. A child with an unusual sliver hair, and red eyes. The child that wasn’t supposed to even be alive, had survived till this day, and was the cause of all her problems.

Until now, Merona still wondered how Margaret had survived through those months, and even gave birth to Hamon. The witch had given birth to a monster! Or perhaps made him a monster herself. If only he was a human, she would have succeeded in killing him all these years.

At first, Frederick did not even care to go and see his son with the maid, and let him live in the servants quarters with his mother for seven years. But one day, he suddenly declared Hamon as the crown Prince.

Nevertheless, Merona was still fortunate enough to be able to kill Margaret seven years later after she gave birth. When Margaret had decided to leave the palace, Merona had sent Edwin after the maid to finish her up. And thankfully, he was successful, he brought back her heart and left her body to rot in the forest.

However, the bastard she left behind, was impossible to kill. He had escaped death countless times before. She loathed Hamon’s existence since the beginning, she loathed his mother as well. A mere maid who conceived a son before she did.

And now, because of Hamon she had been reduced to nothing! She had sworn to give him a miserable death just like his mother, but it was impossible with the powers the bastard possessed. And whenever he showed off his intelligence, Cassius was inevitably proved stupid compared to him. If only her son had half of his intelligence, if only her son could see beyond women, she wouldn’t have been in such a situation.

Merona continued to anxiously pace around her chamber. She had sent Cassius to go and get Eadlin so they could flee from the kingdom for now, since even her brother, Edwin was no more. They could no longer stay here as she’d heard that Hamon had broken through the palace, she had to leave before he comes for her.

Cassius, who had left to get his sister for almost thirty minutes, finally came back heaving for breath, "M-mother, she’s not in the room! The locks of the door had been broken. And_"

"What do you mean she’s not in the room? Where could she possibly go to with that arm of hers?!" She snapped irritatingly at her son.
