Chapter 251: Meeting the grand general
Chapter 251: Meeting the grand general
The next day, Hamon and Ara welcomed the morning together, actually, Hamon had woken up first, but he couldn’t seem to keep his hand to himself and teased her until she woke up too. Ara knew they couldn’t afford to keep laying in bed as they had a lot to do today. However, she had the urge to laze around for awhile.
Still laying in bed, Ara gazed at Hamon affectionately. She had believed that her only purpose for returning to the past was to save her family, but now she had also reunited with Hamon. If she truly had died in her last life without making that wish, she never would have known what love was, or how it was like to be loved, and would only leave the world behind with bitterness of the hatred printed in her heart.
"I love you, Hamon." She uttered out of the blue. Meanwhile, Hamon who heard her couldn’t contain a pleased huff, "I love you even more." He tilted his head and peppered small kisses across her face, his touch was light at first, but the kiss grew hungrier by the second.
Ara, who was still sore from last night’s activity, was forced to block his mouth with her palm.
Hamon frowned in disapproval, he was about to pull down her wrist, but Ara swiftly climbed down the bed and dashed towards the wooden divider.
"My wife, where are you running off to?" He called after her.
"Hamon, We have a lot to do today. Remember we have a meeting with Alex, we can’t keep lazing around in bed." She reminded from behind the wooden divider.
Hamon pursed his lips, "To hell with Alex." He murmured softly, but Ara didn’t quite hear him clearly. "Did you say something?" She asked.
Hamon forced a chuckle, "No, I said I can’t wait to meet Alex."
Soon, the pair were done freshening up for the day. Ara had worn the same simple dress, and was helping her husband with the buttons of his shirt while they discussed about their next steps, a knock rang from the door. Ara already knew it was Caleb, since he’d said he would bring back Alex’s response to her letter today.
"Come in."
The door opened, and so Caleb entered the room. He bowed respectfully to the couple, then spoke, "I apologize for interrupting so early in the morning. If I, by any chance interrupted something, I_"
"Cut the crap, Caleb. Shoot out the report." Hamon cut him off, as he knew the man could be annoyingly dramatic sometimes.
Caleb flashed them a smile and hurriedly said, "I sent the letter to Lord Alexander, and his reply came in this morning."
"What did he say?" Hamon asked.
"He said to meet him at this address, here." He handed a paper to Hamon.
Hamon took the sheet of paper, and saw their meeting place. With a sigh he said, "Well, I guess we will be meeting at his place." He then turned to Caleb, "Can you help us get a carriage?"
"Yes, your highness. I will hire a carriage, but then it will cost a lot of silver coins, Well..." He trailed off, then smiled awkwardly. However, Hamon understood what the young man meant with that.
Hamon patted Caleb’s back, "Don’t worry, I’ll pay you back once we return to the palace. Get the carriage ready immediately."
Caleb’s eyes brightened up hearing that, "Yes, your highness. I will get it ready immediately."
Caleb managed to hire the carriage for the couple, which would take them to their destination without being seen by the queen’s men who were still searching for them in town.
As the carriage moved, the couple didn’t speak as they were both lost in thought. Ara stared outside through the window, watching the passing scenery. Outwardly she looked calm, but inwardly, she was worried and thinking about what other way they’d take if Thomas refused to help them.
Meanwhile, Hamon was also thinking of how to persuade Thomas. If the man still insisted on not picking sides in this battle, Thomas would leave him no other choice...Hamon would have to do it his own way.
The carriage finally arrived at the meeting place, it was the small mansion of the Felstead’s vacation home in the south. And Alex stood outside with his hands causally tucked inside his trouser pockets. Seeing their carriage entered through the gate, he made towards them.
Since Alex had seen which side of the carriage Ara was sitting at through the window, he made towards her door direction. However, upon noticing that Alex was coming to open the door for his wife, Hamon swiftly switched places with Ara. And opened the door, almost slamming it against Alex’s face, but he was fast to dodge the hit.
Hamon stepped out from the carriage and helped his wife out as well, pretending as if he hadn’t just almost hit someone’s face with the carriage door.
Only when Alex cleared his throat did Hamon turned towards him, as if he was only realizing what had happened. He offered Alex a false apologetic look, "Oh I did not see you approaching, did I hit your face?" I hope I did! He added in his mind.
Ara couldn’t help but shake her head in disbelief at her husband’s pettiness. Was he still jealous?
Alex offered a faint smile, "No, You didn’t. It’s been awhile, your highness." Alex’s demeanor was calmer than Ara expected from someone who had almost got slammed with the door. He turned his gaze towards Ara and offered her a friendly smile, "I hope the ride here wasn’t stressful, your highness?" He asked Ara, but it was Hamon who replied, "Oh, Not at all. The ride was smooth and nice."
Alex knew the crown Prince was only trying to get under his skin, thus he didn’t ask anything anymore, and said, "Please, follow me, this way." He motioned for them to follow him, and Ara quickly followed behind Alex, not after shooting a glare at Hamon, who simply shrugged as if to say, ’what did I do?’.
Hamon hurriedly caught up to Ara, and they walked side by side behind Alex.
"You mentioned in your letter that you want to meet my father. The grand general may not assist you in your battle, but...it’s possible that he will meet with you at least." Alex remarked.
Ara had been worried that Thomas might not want to meet with them. Fortunately for them, he accepted. She glanced at Hamon with a small smile after hearing they’d meet Thomas.
Alex did not say much as he guided them to the grand general’s working quarters. Now that Merona wasn’t their only enemy, but Cornell as well, they needed Thomas more than anything. They had to make sure all the troops were ready before tomorrow, today was their deadline to gather all of them. Henry, was already gathering the Boxton’s army, just speaking with Thomas and acquiring his alliance was the only thing left.
Alex halted in front of a door and announced his presence, "General Thomas, your son is back." He said with a crooked smile.
"You son of a cow! What brings you back to Findara? Didn’t I order you to stay until the general’s trainings are over?!" Thomas’s angry snarl rang from inside. Alex was supposed to be in Zari, but he returned as he saw no use of the generals training, when he’d had years of experience at the battlefield.
However, his father had insisted he returned to Zari yesterday, but after hearing of the situation in Findara, he cancelled his traveling and immediately returned, that was when he received Ara’s letter.
At Thomas’s outburst, Hamon and Ara exchanged looks, but then remained silent.
Alex cleared his throat, "Son of a cow you said father? Does that make you the cow?" He remarked sarcastically with a straight face.
Hamon pressed down a laugh, then murmured to Alex, "Well, you are also a cow in that case_." Ara quickly elbowed her husband to not comment on the father and son’s remarks.
"You’ve got the nerves you rascal! Return immediately, before I ask my soldiers to drag you back to the camp like a damn animal!"
Alex sighed, it seemed he was already used to his father’s outburst. With his hands causally behind him, he said calmly, "Father, calm your anger, I’m with guests_"
"Tell whoever your guests are to scram from my territory before I arrest them!"
"Lord Thomas, we would have gladly left from your territory if we’re not in urgent need of your help, so please open the door." Hamon said seriously to let the general know who his guests were.
"Your Highness?" Before Hamon could speak again, Thomas opened the door, revealing his flustered face, but when he saw them, he schooled his expression and immediately bowed.
"Hail your highness’!"
"Arise, it’s been awhile, Lord Thomas."
"Yes, it is, your highness. I apologize for my rudeness earlier."
"Not at all." Hamon casually waved his hand.
Thomas’s gaze shifted to Ara, "Greetings to you, Lord Thomas." Ara slightly bowed her head.
"Greetings to you too, your highness. What brings you here today?"
Hamon spoke next, "I hope we are not imposing on you? your son, Alex had granted our request to meet with you today. Didn’t he inform you of our arrival?" He asked feigning ignorance.
Hearing Hamon’s words, Thomas shot a glare at his son. His eyes were stern, meaning Alex would have to explain himself later. However, Alex still had his mischievous smile on his face, he said, "I’ll go and freshen up while you speak to your guests."
Thomas’s frown deepened, but he could not decline the crown Prince when he was standing on his doorsteps. Such had been Alex’s plan all along, if he had asked permission from his father in advance, Thomas would have rejected straightforward, knowing the reasons the crown Prince wanted to meet with him.
Thomas glared at his son one last time, then politely said to the couple, "Please come in."
