Chapter 249: Let’s take it to the bed
Ara lifted her head from Hamon’s shoulder to study his face. This was the first time she looked at him since he started speaking about his father. He did not look as aggressive as she’d expected, but she could sense a pang of hidden grief and regret behind his smooth veneer. To him, pretending to be fine may be better than crying, but she was more saddened to see him suffer silently.
She knew he held regret for not speaking to his father before he passed away.
"Hamon, you really don’t have to put up a facade...just like I’ve said before, it’s alright to cry if you’re sad, it will make you feel much better than holding it in." She assured him softly, then added, "And if you have things to say to father, we can still visit his grave when we return."
Ara wished she had better words to console him with, but this was the best she could think of. She watched him for some moment, and then hugged him, their position completely changed from earlier. She hugged his head to her chest as she murmured softly into his hair, "I’m sure father was proud of you. You shouldn’t worry, I’ll be here with you, I won’t leave you, I will stand by your side until the very end."
At her words, Hamon tightened his hold around her, then said, "That’s all I ask for, my wife."
Ara felt a little insecure at her frail attempt of comfort...But her husband seemed satisfied with it, as he closed his eyes and leaned comfortably into the warmth of her embrace. And it made a faint smile grace her lips.
Some minutes later, after Hamon was finally relaxed and back to normal, he left the inn and soon returned with food for the both of them. The inn would be their temporary residence until they had gathered their new troops. The room they stayed in only contained a bed and a wooden divider separating the bedroom and the bathroom containing a bathtub. But they did not complain as long as the queen’s men searching for them around the kingdom would not find them here. And it was much better than staying in the forest with no proper meals.
Ara set the food Hamon brought on the low tea table and they both sat on the floor opposite each other as they ate their dinner, Ara informed him of everything she’d done. And the letters she sent out to the people who will lend them help. Thankfully, she did not have to convince him of seeking Alex’s help again, as he had immediately agreed even before she mentioned the topic.
Hamon had no other choice in such situation, he would have to put their differences aside and do what was right if he wanted to avenge his father’s death and take the throne back from that witch of a queen.
"I have send out a letter to meet with Alex tomorrow as I heard he’s back in Findara now, I don’t have his signet with me here, but at home. We will know by tomorrow if he is willing to meet with us, and perhaps you can get to meet Thomas and convince him into helping us fight this battle." Ara stated then sipped from her cup of water.
"Alexander might be easy to convince, because he does fancy you, but Thomas...is a hard nut to crack. Not even the king has command over him, for he owns over five hundred thousand soldiers in his army as the grand general. And for years, he had been neutral in any case concerning the royals."
Hamon was right. Even though they had Alex on their side, his army weren’t enough to bring down the queen’s new troops. Thus, if they wanted to win this battle, only Thomas, the grand general could help them. They’d have to meet with Thomas through Alex tomorrow no matter what.
Ara gave a nod of her head in understanding, "We don’t know what the queen is up to, but we have to convince Thomas as soon as possible tomorrow." She said firmly. They couldn’t afford to slack around while that woman was taking over Findara after spreading false rumors about Hamon abandoning the kingdom.
Hamon hummed, "Mhm, eat up. We will think of how to get him on our side somehow. No matter what, I need to get rid of that hag this time, she has gone too far...After she’s out of the picture, there will no longer be anything to worry about."
Hearing Hamon’s remarks, Ara’s expression turned grave. They still had Cornell to worry about. She thought. She had wanted to tell Hamon about Cornell’s rebellion in their past life after he left Findara, but the ambush had gotten in her way. Now seemed to be a good time to discuss about the magic stone and his uncle.
Ara began, "Hamon..."
"Hmm?" He glanced up from his plate, "What is it?" He asked softly.
"In our previous life after I left the army...I died, I was killed." She admitted not looking at his face.
Hamon’s spoon slipped from his hand, his eyes widened in shock and disbelief, "...you died? How? Who the hell killed you?" His voice was calm, but underneath was a raising volcano.
"Your uncle, Cornell."
Hamon’s shocked expressions dramatically changed to confusion, "My uncle...how? Why?"
She lifted her head and look into his face, "After you left Findara in our past life, Cornell had rebelled against the kingdom, he destroyed many families, including the Boxton household, he killed every one of my family. But I managed to escape that night, that was how I ended up in Greenwood and joined your army to learn how to fight so I could avenge my family’s death."
"After the day I left Greenwood, my hatred for Cornell got the best of me, and I went to the palace to confront him, but...I lost, he killed me instead."
Hamon’s expression darkened, he didn’t know of this because he hadn’t cared to know the happenings in Findara after he left. He had sworn not to bother himself with the kingdom that had caused him grief. He only knew of Frederick’s death, but not his uncle’s rebellion.
"Cornell rebelled against Findara...And he killed you?" He asked as if to confirm again.
Ara nodded, and said, "Not just that, did you know before I died, I unknowingly made a wish on the stone of Helga. I wished for the hands of time to turn back so I could get to do it all over again...I think the stone granted my wish to turn back time, perhaps that’s why it’s dark red now. Maybe because we both had the halves, that’s why we still have the memories of our past lifetime."
Hamon’s expression turned grim this time, "You died in our past life and made a wish on the magic stone..." He murmured. "How could that be?"
Ara’s eyebrows furrowed, "What do you mean?" She asked slightly bemused at his reaction.
He then explained, "The stone of Helga can’t grant life to the same person twice, if you really died in our past life, and it granted that wish to you, it wasn’t supposed to work for the second time you died in this lifetime. The stone had brought you back to life twice."
Hamon knew of the magic stone being cursed by the witch Helga. It was impossible for it to work twice on the same person, Not just that, she had died twice. But since it had worked when he brought her back, it only meant it was different in his wife’s case. Her arrow wounds were healed now, so perhaps it was a good sign. Yes, Nothing could possibly go wrong since she was still here and alive. But then...His uncle being the reason for her first death.
The heck!
"Hamon, What do you mean by the stone can’t bring back the same person twice?" Ara questioned cutting his thoughts.
Hamon glanced at her, "It’s nothing. It’s different in your case. " He said softly, dismissing the thought of the cursed magic stone.
CORNELL KILLED HIS WIFE! Hamon’s fist clenched tightly, at that moment the thought crossed his mind again, his eyes turned as dark as the storm, "How dare that old fart kill my wife! The nerves, rebellion? I shall never let him succeed. No matter the fact that it happened in another lifetime, he can not be forgiven." He said through clenched teeth.
Ara hurriedly exclaimed, "I don’t want you to kill him, Hamon. I want to be the one to do so. Before he killed me in our previous life, he had said to me_’ How will you kill me when you are on the edge of dying yourself? Even if the heavens decide to grant you another chance in life, you’d never be able to kill me, little girl. For I have dealt with your father, besides, I will kill you now, so how will you be able to kill me?’
"Now that I was granted another chance, I want to finish him up myself." She explained.
Hamon slammed his fist on the table, "How can I let that happen? He dared touch you... He hurt you, heck he took your life! ha. I want to tear him up limb by limb, I don’t care if he’s my uncle!"
Despite Hamon’s outrage, his words sounded sweet to her ear. At least he believed his uncle was capable of doing such a thing considering how close he had once been with the man which was one of the reasons she had refrained from telling him about it immediately, because she had been scared he would choose to believe his uncle over her. And he did not question why she was only telling him this now, seeming to understand all her hardship without having to explain further. Ara couldn’t help but feel relief wash over her after telling him the truth.
"Hamon, promise me you won’t act rashly and attack him."
"I can’t promise such a thing." The rage never left his face, she could recognize the grim stubbornness in his eyes, he wanted to avenge her himself, but she had a personal grudge with Cornell and she wanted to be the one to bring him down herself.
Ara frowned, "You have to, he is my prey. Please let me be the one to kill him when the right time comes."
Hamon hesitated for a moment, then exclaimed, "Fine, I won’t do anything to him, but if he dares do anything to harm you again...I assure you he shall die by my hands."
Ara walked around the table and sat beside him, she took his hand in hers, "I won’t let him kill me again in this lifetime. Besides we can’t kill him now that he has not made any attempt of rebelling or taking the throne. Therefore, we have to deal with the matter at hand for now." She assured him.
Ara’s expression turned somber as she said again, "I have lived with the regret of not being able to kill him for taking away my precious family in our previous life...But then in this lifetime, the nightmare of the day he killed me hunts me almost every night..."
Sensing her regret, Hamon cupped her face in both his hand and then pressed a light kiss on her lips, he pulled back, "You shouldn’t worry, I won’t take that away from you. You will be the one to kill him yourself. Now smile."
Ara smiled weakly. Hamon used his thumbs to caress her cheeks, before he slowly leaned down and closed his lips on hers again, however this time it was a slow savoring kiss, as if to assure her. But then the kiss turned deep, it was far more passionate than the pace a moment ago. She found herself unable to resist as she melted in his devouring kiss. Heat was quick to stir up in her body.
When Hamon pulled away, she followed him with her head as if not wanting him to stop. And when she glanced at his eyes, she could see heat reflecting in his red orbs as well, "...Hamon_"
"Shh, if there is anything else you want to say, let’s leave it for tomorrow. Right now...I want to make love to my wife."
Ara knew what the heat in his eyes meant. They hadn’t made love after her first time in the cabin. However, before she could even speak further, Hamon skillfully peeled off her top, revealing her naked torso to him.
Hamon whispered heatedly to her ear, "let’s take it to the bed."
