Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 225: Bad news!
Chapter 225: Bad news!
In the queen’s residence, Merona was still in a foul mood even after the tournament. She couldn’t believe how her own daughter betrayed her. Eadlin had dared to go behind her back and helped her enemy. She’d even gone as far as to get herself paralyzed in the process just to help that Henry Boxton. The championship title that was long held by Kane was now taken by the Boxton family because of Eadlin!
Edwin, who sat anxiously watched as his sister angrily paced around her chamber, "Sister, What do you plan to do with Eadlin? You’ve promised to marry her off to Lord Bathurst, but with her condition, No Lord would take her as a wife with one arm. I think we should find a physician who can fix her arm_"
"Fix her arm, you say? Have you forgotten the poison will cause a permanent paralysis? She brought that on herself, she’ll have to live with one arm as punishment of her betrayal!" She rebuked angrily, "Since no Lord would marry her to help Cassius, she’ll be a huge burden to me now. And if I let her out of that room, she might ruin all our plans again. Not until Cassius is crowned king will she be let out of her room!"
After the guards had brought back Eadlin, Merona had locked her up in her room. Word had somehow began to spread this morning about Eadlin losing one arm, and that alone would bring disgrace to Merona if her influential friends should hear about it. Eadlin had brought that on herself, and she’d have to suffer by staying locked up until Merona found a Lord who would be willing to marry her.
Merona stopped pacing around and sat down with a grim look, her daughter wasn’t the only problem she had to face now. There was another. She pressed her hand against her forehead, "Now let’s get back to our earlier discussion before you brought up Eadlin. How on earth did the bastard find the evidence that I sent those men to disguise as his soldiers?"
Edwin answered with a grave expression, "Some of your men he captured testified against you. And am not sure what other evidence he has after that."
Merona’s expression grew increasingly dark, and Edwin continued on hesitantly, "He must have manipulated some solid evidence for him to be so confident in exposing you."
Merona’s fist struck the arm of the chair, and even Edwin flinched, "Sister..."
"Don’t sister me, Edwin. What in the name of hell were you doing all this time he was gathering the evidence? You uselessly went and provoked his troops when you were supposed to be taking care of this! Moreover, it was all your idea in the first place to send men to disguise as his soldiers to sabotage his name in the kingdom, but now see!"
"But I thought it was a good idea_" Edwin immediately cowered under his sister’s fierce glare, he then slightly bowed his head, "...my apologies."
Merona couldn’t believe her bad luck these days, on one hand was her daughter’s betrayal, and on the other was her brother’s incompetence. Her head was clouded with fury, but couldn’t waste time and energy taking it out on her idiotic brother. What she was supposed to focus on was how to solve this problem.
Merona clenched her jaw and forced herself to stay calm, "if word spreads that I tried to sabotage the crown Prince by attacking the commoners, I am done with in society."
Edwin chuckled despite the seriousness of the matter in hand, "It shouldn’t matter, Sister. They are just lowly beings, nobody would care less of what happened to the commoners."
A deep crease formed between Merona’s brows, her brother really had no grasps how dire their current situation was. "What would people say if they found out I tried to sabotage the crown Prince? More importantly, don’t forget those men you sent killed a lot of commoners."
Edwin scoffed, "What does it matter what trivial commoners think? No body cares about their loss."
Merona shook her head in disbelief, "You really are a goof, Edwin. This is why I shouldn’t have trusted you to handle this matters in the first place." She massaged her aching forehead, pained by her brother’s ignorance. She then continued to explain in a low voice as if she was tired of dealing with him,
"As individuals, it is true that the commoners have no power at all. But it would be a different case if the royal court should hear about this. It would cause a huge problem if they get involved."
Edwin was still unconvinced by her words, as he believed those lowly beings could do nothing to them. However, he kept his mouth shut, but Merona could tell by his stupid expression that he wasn’t getting her, nor was he getting how serious this was. Thus she decided to give up trying to make a bozo like him understand, and instead fell back into her silent planning.
Although the situation was dire, but it wasn’t impossible to resolve it. Merona thought through her plans in her head for awhile, then spoke, "I must convince the royal court officials soon. We have to come up with a false statement putting the blame on someone else, I can’t be found guilty of this."
"How do you plan to do that, sister?"
"The 100th year anniversary of the De Biville family ascending the throne is coming soon, and all the royal court officials will be present on that day. If this should spread, it wouldn’t be good at all. If we don’t resolve this soon, it could bring my down fall..."
Every year in Findara, there was a celebration held to celebrate the anniversary of the De Biville family. And all the officials will be present and discuss about politics and who would be the next heir to the throne. Furthermore, the kingdom was already crowded with guests who came for the tournament, and would be staying for the celebration before returning to their kingdoms. If news spread of her being responsible for such crimes...
Merona sighed tiredly, "Fortunately, we still have most of the officials on Cassius’ side, and I know they would support us on this event. After that, everything would be under control."
"Yes, sister. I will have a private meeting with the officials before the event as soon as I can."
"Good, and I hope you use your brain this time around."
As if this problem wasn’t enough for Merona, suddenly, Hera came running into the room and shouting in a loud voice, "Your majesty, bad news!"
As soon as Merona had come up with a solution for one problem, another one appeared. Her face wrinkled in a scowl, "Why are you shouting, what bad news?"
"Your majesty, it’s about the second Prince."
"What about my son?" She asked slightly impatient.
Hera bowed, "The crown Prince arrested him today at his party."
"What?!" Merona could not suppress her anger any longer and leapt to her feet, while Edwin’s eyes widened in disbelief at the news.
"What reasons does the bastard have to arrest a Prince?!" She demanded.
"...It was said the second Prince was under suspicions for using drugs and violating women..."
"What? Violating women?"
Edwin’s face turned ugly. Neither of them spoke again, knowing full well the nature of Cassius’ parties. It was impossible not to, more than once, it had fallen upon Merona to help him get rid of nobles who wanted to press charges against her son for violating their daughters.
Merona’s face flushed with rage. It was rare for her to ever lose her composure, but now, two of her children would be the cause of her down fall!
"I’d warned him countless times, but yet...!"
Ever since Hamon had returned from the border, Merona had repeatedly warned her son to keep his head down for now, but he kept disobeying her and kept participating in activities that could bring their down fall.
"What should we do now, sister?" Edwin looked at Merona’s hard eyes. He knew how serious this situation was this time. His sister had gathered this much power for Cassius sake, and if he could not be crowned, then her current influence would crumble to dust. Even their elder brother, the current king of Dumbarton wouldn’t be able to get them out of this if Cassius was found guilty and the king put his hand in this matter.
Merona barely managed to hold back her surging anger and asked, "Do you know where Cassius is being held at the moment?"
"We don’t know about that yet, but your mole in the crown Prince’s residence said he was dragged by the Prince himself...And when Cassius refused to move, the crown Prince had repeatedly punched and whipped him with a leopard skin belt."
At Hera’s words, Merona’s anger intensify double. It was like she’d explode in rage. How dare that bastard lay his hands on her son?! Going as far as to whipping him!
"Edwin!"
"Yes, sister?"
"Gather all your troops and immediately search the bastard’s residence!"
Hera and Edwin were taken aback by Merona’s order, they both looked at each other then at Merona. That would be trespassing! But the queen didn’t care, she was only worried about her son’s safety to even think about the aftermath.
"Use any means of force to enter his residence and bring back my son!" Her precious son captured by the crown Prince was enough to shake Merona. Hamon was a man who’d spent most of his years at the border, more like a commander. Her son being his prisoner would mean...He would be tortured by Hamon. She couldn’t waste time when that monster could kill her son under the excuse of his crime.
"Get on with it, Edwin!" She snapped when her brother hesitated to move.
Edwin quickly bowed, "Right away, sister."
