Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 202: His past (part 2)
Chapter 202: His past (part 2)
And as Hamon had said, Merek was kept hostage in the crown Prince’s residence. Merek spent his time studying the Prince, who was always followed by a blonde haired young man, Oliver. The fact that Hamon was brutal and intelligent was an understatement. He was a man of towering charisma.
As time went by, Merek knew his days on earth was numbered, the crown Prince could kill him at anytime, but he didn’t feel sorry for himself nor regret killing the people he’d killed. He just waited until Hamon would decide to kill him.
However, Hamon still didn’t kill him after weeks, and instead came to pay him a visit at the darkroom one night. The Prince causally sat on a stone inside the darkroom opposite Merek, he then asked nonchalantly,
_enjoying your time in the darkroom?
_When do you plan to kill me?
_Hah, you still want to die? Don’t worry, I will soon. Just tell me something first. How is it that you have a slave brand on your shoulder? If you were a slave, how did you become an assassin?
Merek didn’t see any use to hide anything since he was going to die anyway. He began to tell Hamon everything he’d gone through as a slave, and he also told him about Ivan, the psychopathic master he’d served and how he hadn’t yet gotten his revenge on him. Somehow, he felt good after pouring out his mind to the crown Prince, who seemed to be listening intensively.
Hamon chuckled as if he found amusement in the part of Ivan’s psychopathic character, he then nonchalantly asked,
_Do you still remember where this psychopath lives?
Merek nodded, how could he ever forget?
_Good.
That same night, Hamon and Merek left the palace, however Merek’s both hands were cuffed. The pair made to the mansion where Ivan lived. Merek never realized how much resentment he held for the place itself until he saw the huge mansion again.
Ivan was older now, and had taken full charge of the household. He had an important position as the head of the family. Merek could somehow guess why Hamon had brought him here.
Hamon uncuffed his hands and gave him a sword. Merek looked on in bemusement, and Hamon spoke in a flat voice,
_Why are you still standing here? Go take your revenge on that bastard, make it a painful death for him.
Merek was taken aback for some moment, before he took the sword from Hamon. He made his way inside the mansion and went straight to Ivan’s room. He found the psychopath sleeping peacefully on his bed, but as if sensing his presence, he woke up. However, Merek didn’t give any chance to register what was happening.
For the first time in Merek’s life, he so much enjoyed spilling blood with his own hands. He made it a painful death, then walked out of the house to meet Hamon.
The world had changed a little for him ever since he’d met Hamon and was kept hostage. Merek had lived as a puppet for all his years, following everyone’s orders and moved only on commands. But now, he was beginning to understand what it was like to be alive. Having someone to talk to, was also new to him.
On their way back from taking his revenge, Merek asked Hamon, _’Did you bring me here because of the story I told you?
_Maybe. And I would like to see your happily ever after, your story was incomplete because you didn’t kill one of your villains, so I brought you here to make it complete.
For the first time ever, a smile spread on Merek’s younger face. He then heard Hamon asked,
_What is your name?
Merek’s smile fell immediately hearing that question. His mother hadn’t loved him enough to even name him, he never had a name, but was called different names like: bastard, son of a whore, mistake.
_I don’t have a name...
_Your mother never named you?
_...
Merek didn’t give an answer and just stared blankly ahead. Hamon then said,
_Hmm, if you don’t have a name, then let’s give you one now. It would be hard for me to call you out if you don’t have a name. Choose what you want to be called.
Merek thought for a moment, then answered without any difficulty, it was a word he’d heard in the assassins guild, which he quite liked,
_You can call me Merek.
_Merek? That will suits you well. Very well, Merek...What about a last name?
_Isn’t that too much for a nobody like me? I don’t think I need a last name.
_Choose one or else I’ll do it for you.
Merek swallowed a curse, and spoke the first word that came into his mind, _Bardot...
_Bardot? Wasn’t that the surname of that psychopath you just killed?
_Yes, I’ll take his surname as mine now that he’s no more. I want to annoy his ghost as well.
Hamon chuckled, _How strange...
Hamon didn’t say anything more about Merek’s decision. They continued to wander through the deserted night street. The two young men were of the same height.
As they walked in silence, Hamon spoke first, _Merek Bardot.
_...Yes?
_I want you to serve me.
Merek, who was walking beside Hamon abruptly halted his steps at the word, ’Serve me’. Hamon also stopped and turned behind, he then rephrased his words,
_Not as a slave. I want you to be one of my soldiers, and I will give you a title as well as pay you like everyone of my men. You’ve got skills and I want to keep you than waste your life.
_Your Highness...
_Are you willing or not?
Merek was stunned beyond words. For him who had nothing, this was an extraordinary opportunity to give a person. There was no reason for him to refuse, but then he found himself unable to give a prompt reply.
Hamon stared at Merek for another moment, when he didn’t reply him, he turned and began to walk away while saying,
_It’s fine, Merek. If you don’t want to join, then you are free to go. I am no longer holding you as a hostage.
There was not a shadow of doubt of the path Merek had to take. If he refused, he’d have no where to return to even if Hamon set him free. He had believed after taking his revenge, his life would be over sooner or later, but Hamon seemed to be willing to set him free and even offer him a job. Another chance in life.
Merek’s internal debate did not last long, and he ran to catch up to Hamon who’d already walked quite far from where they stood before,
_I accept...I owe you my life from now on, I will serve you until the day I cease to exist.
Hamon smiled, _You choose right, Merek. I look forward to working with you.
That was the beginning of their journey down the same road, and Merek had sworn to himself to serve Hamon alone forever until he die. He had no smallest regret for living and breathing for the Prince. He didn’t need much, but was satisfied with just the praises he received from Hamon after every mission.
However, Hamon had insisted on rewarding him with a gold chest and a mansion after his two years of serving him. But Merek hadn’t up till now collected the keys to his mansion from Hamon nor taken the gold chest he was given, because he had nothing to do with them. He had no dreams, he had no intentions of settling down, nor does he have any desire for wealth.
After leaving the Boxton mansion that night, Merek soon returned to the crown Prince’s residence. He stood in front of Hamon’s study room without making any attempt to knock. His mind wandered back to Anne, her pleas and tears still tugged at his heart, but he forced himself to simply forget about her and everything.
Finally he raised his hand and softly knocked on the study room’s door, then Hamon’s voice came from inside,
"Enter."
Merek turned the doorknob and it opened with a creak. He walked inside, Hamon’s eyebrows furrowed seeing it was him. Merek could tell he was astonished to see him back when he was supposed to be at the Boxton’s.
Merek gave a curt bow, "I am back to my work, Your Highness." Where he rightfully belonged.
