Chapter 166: Letter from an unknown person
After the couple left the training hall and reached to their room, Hamon had kept on complaining about his injured hand, saying it hurt so much. He even made Ara unbutton his shirt when he wanted to go and shower. She had wordlessly helped him remove his shirt. And after that, he had continued to complain about the pain even after she’d called the royal physician to check his injured hand.
Not only that, even now that they were having dinner. His spoon slipped from his hand onto the table, "Ouch! My hand hurts too much to hold anything."
"Does it still hurt? The physician said it isn’t a serious injury. Should I call him again?" She worriedly asked. However, she didn’t notice his secret pleased smile. Hamon enjoyed how she’d been doing everything he asked, and she’d been worrying about him lately.
Hamon continued to act innocent, he sighed, "No need. The pain just comes and goes, and I think it’s worse now. But don’t worry, I’ll get better soon."
"Are you sure I shouldn’t call the royal physician here again?"
"Yes..."
"Oh, then I guess it’s not a serious pain. That’s good."
Hamon quickly interjected, "It’s not good, because it’s hurting now and I can’t use my left hand to eat. If only someone could just feed me and save me the trouble of the pain." He sighed, "If only my wife would help me, I got hurt protecting her face, but it seems she doesn’t care enough to feed me." He complained as he stared pointedly at Ara with his chin propped up on his left hand as if waiting for her to come and feed him.
Ara blushed and looked towards the servants standing aside in the dinning hall, "I don’t think_"
"Let it be if you don’t want to, am not forcing you to do it. I’ll just manage on my own."
Ara breathed in relief, but then Hamon who said he would manage by himself, went back to spreading the fingers of his injured hand, "Stupid hand. It still hurts, I really can’t lift the spoon, wife. Ha, nobody likes me enough to help the hungry me to eat." He muttered softly like a child as he gave Ara a side glance. This was a rare opportunity and she was concerned about him, of course it was only right he utilized it to the fullest, Hamon thought, he wouldn’t even mind acting like a spoiled little wife as long as he could get her care and attention.
With a deep sigh, Ara stood up and eventually approached him. She drew a chair close to his side and sat down. Ara took his plate and began to cut the steak to pieces, she then picked it with his fork and held it out to him, Ara had only cut it for him so he’d take it with his other hand, but instead her shameless husband leaned down and took it into his mouth. Her cheeks burned with embarrassment as he took a bite from the fork she was holding.
Hamon flashed her a soft smile, "I have never eaten anything as delicious as this. It tastes even better when you feed it to me."
"Is that even possible?"
"Of course, it is. If you promise to continue to feed me everyday, I don’t think I’ll ever need my right hand again. I might as well just cut it off completely so I can continue to enjoy this luxury."
Ara’s eyebrows furrowed, she wasn’t sure if he was joking or being serious. She glared at him, "Don’t ever say such a thing again. Not even in jest." She knew his head worked in a different way from any normal person, she wouldn’t want him cutting off his hand. Not that she’d like him less with one hand though.
Hamon chuckled at her warning glare, "Fine, am joking, but please continue to feed me more, am still hungry."
Ara continued to feed him, and he happily ate the food with a smile. His pink tongue would peek out to lick his lips every now and then. Ara just observed his face as she fed him. She learned something new today from feeding him; watching a man eat was extremely attractive. Whenever his red lips would open to accept the food, she had to avert her eyes to avoid his erotic gestures of licking the soup from his lips. Hamon was truly bad for her heart and body, she realized once more.
--
The next day, Ara finished preparing for the day, and was about to leave the room, but a knock came from the door. She turned towards the door and called out, "Come in."
Emma entered the room, her expression looked more serious than usual, Ara gave her a questioning look, "Is something wrong?"
"Um...yes, my lady. This letter came in last night." She held out an envelope, "it has no seal or a name of the sender. You should read it, It’s an urgent message."
Ara’s eyebrows drew together in bemusement, "Is the letter for me?"
"I think so, it’s a matter concerning you. Please read it yourself." Emma handed the envelop to the confused Ara. Who could have sent a letter with no household seal or name? she accepted the envelope, opened it and brought out the letter, she began to read the content in it with a frown.
The letter read; [Good day, your highness. I hope this letter reaches you safely. You might be wondering who I am, but please don’t worry about that for now. What am about to tell you is more important than my identity. You should take quick action on what am about to tell you. The daughter of the Tudor household is after your husband, you should attend the upcoming banquet, she plans to...]
The letter included the scheme Claire was planning. After Ara finished reading the letter, she glanced up at Emma, "How should we know if this is true or false. What if it is just a trick?"
"I don’t think you should take it lightly though. It might be true, my lady. There is no harm in preparing beforehand. Prevention is better than cure."
Emma was not wrong, Claire was after Hamon, and whoever the sender was, must be close to Claire to know all this information. Although the letter was a bit suspicious, however the letter was also consistent with what Ara had recently heard from Mary yesterday.
In summary, Claire planned to obtain an aphrodisiac. The letter also spoke of how she went about doing everything. The plan was brazen as to be ridiculous, but if it succeeds, Claire would get the result she wanted, she would trap Hamon in her scheme. The letter seemed so true, Claire was so capable of doing such a thing.
Ara deemed the letter unlikely to be a trick nor a trap. The context fit, and there was no reason for Claire to benefit by informing her of her own plans. Moreover, she needed to act before such a plan would succeed.
"We have to investigate this first." She said to Emma, who was quick to nod in agreement. "Yes, I think so too. We have to make sure that plan never succeeds, my lady."
Ara glanced at Emma’s determined face, she’d kept Emma around because she had a good heart. Ara was always impressed with how smart she was, she seemed to have matured more from the first time she met her. To Ara, Emma was like a friend, "Thank you again, Emma."
"Don’t mention it, my lady. I came to the palace to serve you, so I’ll do anything to lend you my help anytime you need it." She mused.
"I appreciate your help... can you do me a favour? Please don’t let anyone hear about this yet." She would like to handle this so it wouldn’t turn out like the time she tried to expose Merona at the soiree.
"Yes, my lady."
Ara immediately went about planning. She couldn’t help but imagine what would happen if Claire’s plans succeeded and she got to spend a passionate night with her Hamon. A murderous green glint flashed in Ara’s eyes at the thought of it alone. she would never let that happen! Perhaps, someday there will be a second wife depending on their needs, but she would make sure there would never be a need for a second wife in this lifetime. Not yet...!
--
The day of the banquet finally arrived. Ara had already figured out how to stop Claire’s brazen plans from happening. All that was left was to see if it was really true that she was planning to do such a thing. If it was true...
Ara’s lips pulled up as she stood in front of Hamon tying his ascot. She smoothly tied it this time. It had been part of her daily routine ever since that day, and she was far better at doing it now than her first awkward attempt. However, she kept her gaze away from his piercing red eyes as she tied the ascot on his neck. She could feel his eyes boring down on her the whole time, but tried her best not to glance up at him to keep her heart from going crazy again.
She heard his deep, smooth voice above her head, "Hmm, has there been some changes in your heart now?"
Ara’s cheeks were quick to turn red. Did he notice? Were her feelings written all over her face for him to notice? Despite her anxious mind, she replied calmly, "What do you mean?"
