Wife of The Demon Prince
Chapter 119: Protective

Chapter 119: Protective

Ara’s wedding preparations had began again, this time without any hitches. She’d been busy for the past few days as the wedding was currently only five days away. But the surprising thing was that, she hadn’t been seeing her sister around lately. Anne, who would normally come to her was no where to be seen around the mansion.

Ara asked a servant about Anne’s whereabouts, and the servant Informed her that Anne was in the east garden. Ara made her way there, but was surprised to meet a familiar person in the garden with Anne who was seated on the swing.

What was he doing here?! What the heck was Merek doing in their mansion? Ara narrowed her eyes, and saw it was really Merek holding something out to Anne.

Ara’s expression darkened and hurried towards them, "Anne, who is this man here?" She asked as if she did not know who Merek was. Anne’s face brightened up, then said, "Oh, I forgot to tell you, he’s one of the new servants I hired in the mansion."

New servant? Ara glanced at Merek suspiciously wondering why he came to work in the mansion. He then greeted with a bow, "Good afternoon, my lady. My name is Merek." He introduced with a straight face as if it was their first time meeting.

Ara couldn’t help but think he was really good at acting, but she wasn’t pleased with someone like Merek staying in their mansion, he was known for killing skillfully. And she wasn’t comfortable with him being around her sister. Ara gave him a nod, "Nice to meet you..."

Anne sensed her sister’s behavior towards Merek and asked, "Have you met him before?"

"No, I haven’t." Ara replied. Anne then turned to Merek, "Meet my sister, it’s her wedding we’re preparing for in few days."

Merek bowed again, "Congratulations on your up coming wedding, my lady." He congratulated with no flicker of familiarity on his face.

Ara couldn’t believe how he could act this good. He was an expert in hiding his emotions, but she still wanted to know why he suddenly decided to work in the mansion. Ara glanced towards Anne and said, "I’ve been looking all over for you, What are you doing here?"

"Oh, I was showing Merek where he’d be working." She replied with a grin, "Why were you looking for me?"

"I wanted to show you something, but then, can you go and call Maya for me?" Ara said to send her sister away so that she could have a talk with Merek, but Anne hesitated and stared at Merek as if worried about leaving him alone with Ara.

Ara urged, "Go ahead Anne, you can still show him around later." Ara wondered why her sister was being this way towards a servant.

"Tch." Anne clicked her tongue, and was forced to nod. She didn’t want to leave Merek alone with her sister, as Ara could interrogate him and find out he was once a thief. She didn’t want anybody to know of his old self, he just came today. Her sister might start to question him in her absence. Anne turned towards Merek, "Don’t go anywhere, I’ll go and get the maid and come back immediately, alright?"

He gave her a stiff nod, then Anne smiled and hurried back inside the mansion to get the maid. "Maya!"

Ara and Merek could clearly hear Anne’s voice calling for Maya inside the mansion. Ara quickly asked Merek before her sister could come back, "What are you doing here? Why didn’t you tell me about it earlier?"

Merek bowed, "Am sorry for not informing you earlier, I just started today, but ever since I started working, I did not get the chance to even step away for a moment. My lady."

Ara eyebrows drew together, "Who’s been giving you loads of work?"

"It’s lady Anne." Merek replied calmly, but Ara couldn’t help but wondered why Anne chose to have a personal servant. Furthermore, How could she make him work that much without a minute of break? Ara didn’t think much about it as she knew her sister’s head worked differently, she went back to the main topic,

"Why did you come to work here?"

"His Highness sent me here to guard you."

Ara’s eyebrows raised, "His Highness? But I thought you were already guarding me before?"

Merek paused for a moment. He couldn’t tell her his real reason for being in the mansion. The crown Prince had told him to give her an excuse whenever she questioned why he was working as a servant.

"His Highness sent me here because of what you did last time. You attended the second Prince’s party without informing him first, so he ordered me to be a servant in the mansion to guard you closely." He gave her the words Hamon had told him to say, and also added, "And to also watch over your family’s safety."

Ara’s forehead creased, "My family’s safety?"

They was no one to protect in her family. They were all strong enough to protect themself. Suddenly, Ara’s thought went to Anne. Ara could protect herself, Henry was a trained soldier, and her father a general, but...Anne? If anything should happen like in her previous life, her sister wouldn’t be able to protect herself. She couldn’t imagine losing her again.

Maybe it wasn’t that bad for someone like Merek to be Anne’s personal servant. Ara thought through everything, and said, "Alright, as long as you will always guard my sister from any danger...I don’t mind you staying here."

"I will, my lady."

He’d promised the crown Prince to protect Ara, but he’d try his best to protect the crazy young lady as well, but if anything ever happened...He’d have no choice but to think of Ara’s safety first.

"I want you to always guard my sister specially, please. Always be around her."

Merek gave her a nod of his head. However, it was strange that the crown Prince cared for only Ara’s safety, but Ara cared more about her sister’s. And along with Ara’s order to always be around Anne came a premonition of the coming days that will be filled with tons of trouble and ceaseless chatter from the overly talkative young lady, he reckoned he wouldn’t be able to get away from her for a second even if he wanted to anyway.

As Ara and Merek were talking in a low voice, and they were standing quite close to each other. Anne, who ran out from the mansion with a smile, halted immediately she saw the two and the smile on her face was quick to fall.

Anne quickly strode towards them, and when they both noticed her, they both went quiet. "What are you...discussing with him, sister?"

Anne’s blue eyes moved between the two suspiciously. But Ara shook her head, "Nothing, I mean there is nothing to talk about with a stranger."

Anne glanced at Merek and he also nodded in agreement to what Ara said. But to Anne, it looked like the two were having an intimate conversation from the distance, but she didn’t say anything as they’d both denied talking to each other.

Anne protectively stood in front of Merek, so close he could perceive her flowery scent from her hair. Even though Anne never felt jealous of her sister, she wouldn’t want Merek to like her sister better than her. He was hers. And she knew any man would fall for her sister’s beauty, but she wouldn’t let Merek like Ara better than her!

Ara was taken aback by how Anne was standing so close in front of Merek. She then glanced up at Merek, but he shrugged as if to tell her he had no idea what Anne was doing standing in front of him. She was about to comment on it, but the maid Anne went to call had come running, while gasping for air as she wiped the sweat off her forehead,

"M-my lady, Miss Anne said you needed me urgently, is everything alright?"

At the maid’s appearance, Ara looked away from the pair and glanced at Maya who was still catching her breath as if she’d ran all the way here, "Yes, I wanted you and Anne to come with me to help me choose one from the six wedding gowns." Ara said to the maid and turned to Anne, "Are you coming?"

Anne nodded excitedly with a grin. With that Ara also smile and erased the thought of questioning her sister about her strange behavior towards Merek. At least now she could be at ease knowing Merek would always be around to guard Anne. She would overlook the fact that Merek was a dangerous person, as long as he’d be her sister’s bodyguard.

As the sun was setting behind the horizon. Merek finally got the chance to be alone without Anne being around him. He hadn’t seen any suspicious person in the Mansion yet so he made his way to the servants quarters.

But as he was walking out of the Boxton mansion he bumped into someone, but before the person could fall backwards from the impact of hitting him, Merek was quick to grab the person’s hand and drew her back on her feet.

The person wore a servant uniform. And thanked him with a charming smile on her face. She had a face that looked too good to be of a servant’s. Merek let her hand go and with a small nod he walked pass her, but she ran after him,

"Hello, are you a new servant too?"

"..."

He ignored her and kept walking, but the young woman still continued to follow him, "Your quarter is close to where I also stay!" She exclaimed.

Merek halted and said to her in a cold tone, "Leave me alone young lady." But the woman did not hear the warning in his tone and continued, "Since we both work here, let’s be friends." She said with an innocent smile and extended her hand as if to ask for a handshake, "My name is Ellyn. What about you?"

Merek glanced down at her hand and ignored it, then said in his low usual voice, "Merek." He then walked away from Ellyn. But the smile on her face widened, "Merek..." She repeated.

Wasn’t he the man she saw that morning? However, she doesn’t care, he’d be her pass time in the mansion until she completed her mission! What a cold but handsome man.
