When Did I Become An Artifact Dealer?!
Chapter 91 - 92: Stairs

Chapter 91: Chapter 92: Stairs

Mr. Quill looked careless, but Cail knew that he was already suspected.

"Luckily I said aunt." That was a close call. But fortunately, he does have an ’aunt’ in this city.

It was the first thing that came into his mind as he tried to scan his memory for anyone he knew who lived in this city.

"That knocked the hunger out of me." Cail thought as he walked towards the food section. "It’s already 3 a.m.—why is that guy still wandering around?" Is it just a coincidence? The walking backwards seemed to be targeted only at Zishi, surely that wouldn’t warrant an investigation since it seemed to be a family problem.

He picked out some chips and a drink. After paying, he headed back to his room as he felt that his desire to explore vanished.

Cail clicked the elevator button, then all of a sudden, the number that was on top glitched; it seemed to be stuck at the 13th floor.

"Oh fuck." Cail knew that this was probably done by those guys... But can they not inconvenience someone that isn’t involved with their scheme?

He called the hotel staff to check the elevator. After confirming that it was really broken and is stuck at the 13th floor, they profusely apologized and asked Cail to take the stairs as they fix the issue.

"I can’t fly can I?" Cail said to the staff. He was feeling a bit pissed. But he had no other choice. But damn, that was the 15th floor.

Cail asked for directions to the stairs, the staff pointed towards a very remote spot in the hotel. When he arrived at the place the staff pointed to, Cail looked at the dimly lit space and thought that it resembled a monster’s mouth.

"This feels like someone’s childhood trauma."

Now, Cail was walking in a dimly lit staircase. "Why do staircases always look so gloomy and scary as if something was about to pop out of nowhere."

It looked very plain and some lights looked like they were already fighting for their lives. Some were bright; some looked as if they’d die at any moment. "Did they just forget about this after installing the elevator?" Cail muttered, he could even smell the dust in the air.

"Hey, I’m pretty bored. What do you think is going on with that Zishi guy." Cail spoke to the resident in his bracelet.

"I have no idea and I’m not interested." The bracelet said.

Cail continued climbing. He was just staring straight ahead when he noticed that he seemed to have already walked a bit of distance but the stains on the wall looked familiar.

Mind you, he said he was walking, but in actuality, he was more like jogging as he walked up stairs. He looked up and saw a floor sign number. He was already on the 9th floor.

"This better not be what I think it is." Cail said, his voice laced with danger.

He continued walking. This time, he was already paying attention to the stains on the wall and the number above.

Instead of going up, the numbers were going down. 7-6-5-4-3- then back to 8.

Finally realizing what’s going on, Cail laughed in anger. "Oh. This is really cute. Someone thinks this is funny?" Did they think that this forced cardiovascular exercise funny?

Suddenly, the bracelet in his arms glowed, "Stop what you are thinking." Cail’s thoughts about it were so strong that the bracelet sensed it immediately.

"Why so stressed? I was just thinking about it. I’M NOT ABOUT TO DO IT." He said, already gritting his teeth.

"Why are you so destructive." The bracelet asked, clearly very exasperated. "Your world is clearly a peaceful one, but all your solutions seemed tooutside common sense."

"What’s so destructive about blowing up this staircase?" Cail begged to differ. "That’s a very minimal damage, mind you. You know what I consider real damage?"

The bracelet was speechless, "We’re in the same boat now. I don’t want to attract the authorities. You know that I’m very weak right now. If that Law maker comes here and deal with us, we’d be dead."

Cail sat down on the stairs and opened a bag of chips. "You’re very cowardly. Sometimes I couldn’t help but think that you did something shady to be turned into something that is neither human nor monster." Heck, there’s no way he would continue walking up these stairs. He would feel like an idiot.

"Why did the topic suddenly turn into my issue?" The bracelet was stunned by the sudden turn of events.

Cail ignored him. He felt pissed whenever someone says ’don’t do this, don’t do that.’ Although he knew by logic that he should not be feeling this way, what’s the use? He already felt annoyed.

He looked up. The ceiling was made of a big mirror. He had no idea who the architect of this building was, but a mirror as a ceiling in a close staircase is not a good idea from Cail’s perspective.

Cail raised his hand. The mirror him did the same. It wasn’t the cliche mirror scare, but Cail did notice something. The mirror... It was supposed to reflect the opposite right? Why did it follow his hand movements the same as his in reality? He raised his left hand and it did the same...

"This shit better not pull some absurd horror tactic on me." Instead of being pissed, Cail felt that it was a bit funny. He continued playing with the mirror.

It didn’t seem to do anything aside from not doing what it should do.

Then, just as he thought that was it. Someone sudden came down running on stairs. It couldn’t be seen in reality, but it was visible in the mirror.

It was a young man with disheveled hair. He was still wearing light blue pajamas from his sleep. His eyes were wide open in panic as he rushed downstairs.

"Zishi... What is he doing here?" Cail looked at him. He was panting and something seemed to be chasing him... But Zishi did look a bit spooky. He was running downstairs backwards.
