When Did I Become An Artifact Dealer?! -
Chapter 52: The Dealer Is The War Bell
Chapter 52: Chapter 52: The Dealer Is The War Bell
An interesting discovery, but Cail had no interest in their personal relationship. Cail waved his hand dismissively, "Okay, okay, I don’t care. But... you know where you are heading and what you are feeling."
"I’m here because I sensed your desire. I’m just here to sell. As for what you do after that, that’s not on me." Cail opened his palms.
"Abyssal Ribbon: it can grant the user the ability to steal people’s memories about you. The limit is that the memory that can be stolen will only last for 14 seconds. Side effects include forgetfulness." Cail dropped the artifact onto the ground. He wasn’t afraid that it would be stolen; he knew that any artifacts that weren’t sold could be recalled using the space mark on his arms.
Inshi didn’t know that. She looked at the ribbon that fell onto the ground. She could sense that it was an artifact. In the world of the void, even those from noble families didn’t dare treat artifacts like that.
She wasn’t blinded by greed. All she felt was fear. How powerful must someone be to confidently throw away valuables on the ground?
Cail ignored the ribbon. "This one next is called Echo Mirror. It allows you to experience the memory of others. The catch is that the more you view others’ memories, the more immersed you feel in them."
Then he threw the mirror on the floor and showed another artifact. "This one is the Spine of Gyl. The more guilt you feel, the more your physical strength will increase. The catch is that the guilt will amplify, and it could drive the user insane."
Looking at the three artifacts on the floor, Cail said, "Now, of those artifacts, which one do you think will fulfill your wish?"
Inshi gulped. This time, she wished this was just a hallucination of hers. She whispered, "The Dealer?"
Cail had heard of that. It was just a general term for any person who sold artifacts. So Cail just nodded. "Yes, I’m a Dealer."
Even the child Veyr was already looking at him. "You’re the Dealer?"
Cail felt a bit irked by their look. Isn’t it just a generalized term? Since he had already nodded, he said, "Yes?" It was a bit unconfident, though.
Inshi looked at him fearfully. "Wh—why do you want to make me your client?" The Dealer was not just an ordinary dealer, though. It was basically a title given to someone a long time ago. They didn’t know where the stories came from or when the Dealer first appeared, but his appearance typically meant that an impending disaster was about to happen.
There had been five changes of era on the other side. During those five changes, whenever the Dealer appeared, it meant that the end of the era was near.
The clients of the Dealer are called lambs. They are bringers of disaster. While that sounds scary, the temptation that the Dealer offers is something not just anyone can refuse.
Because of that legend, there had been a lot of copycats. But as time passed, it became known that they were just plunderers who were untrustworthy and sold things.
Now, Inshi knew that she was a chosen lamb. "But why me?" Although her experience was unfortunate, she wasn’t unique.
Cail felt confused as to why she looked like she’d just seen doom. "Because I wanted to?" That was his honest reason.
But Inshi overthought. "Is there something wrong with me? Like a hidden side or something?" Of course, she didn’t say that, but if she had, Cail would have applauded her for getting half the things right.
Seeing that she was silent, Cail was annoyed. "Do you want the deal or not?"
Inshi’s lips shook. She was bombarded with a lot of information just from knowing this man’s identity. The era was ending, and she was the lamb.
But it was unknown what she was thinking, but Cail saw that she looked very dull and silent for a few minutes before smiling.
It reminded Cail of that hypocrite, Sirae.
"Is this a trait they got from their father?" Cail thought. It seemed they had different mothers, from what he knew.
"The more feisty, the better."
Cail didn’t care about her consideration. He had been playing the Dealer the entire time, and he kind of loved the power trip. "So, what’s your choice?"
Inshi smiled. It was eerily similar to Sirae’s. "I want the Abyssal Ribbon."
Cail snapped his fingers. "Good choice! But first, let me tell you the price."
It was the new pricing of the artifacts. The scale in Cail’s vision slowly tilted. The scale showed what it wanted in exchange.
"I want your ability to feel excitement..." Cail said. His eyes narrowed when he saw the price.
Isn’t this such a big price to pay for something like this? Of course, Cail’s thoughts were different from Inshi’s.
Inshi’s eyes widened, and she couldn’t help but say, "Is that all?"
"Is that all?" Cail repeated, in a more incredulous tone than Inshi’s.
Seeing that, in Inshi’s eyes, losing the ability to feel excitement was a bargain, Cail was shocked by how ’normal’ people viewed their emotions.
For Cail, someone who lacked empathy, losing some of your emotions was a nightmare.
What Cail liked was the thrill, the happiness, the sadness, and the despair. He wanted the emotions that make a person human.
Looking at Inshi, who was very ready to trade it, Cail felt a bit displeased, but he didn’t show it. Because aside from feeling that normal people are ungrateful, Cail also felt a bit curious.
"I want to push the limit as to when a human is considered human," Cail thought.
Now, seeing the new pricing on the scale, Cail thought, "What a damn scammer."
The client might feel that it was a bargain, but for Cail, this was a losing deal to the other side. His newly updated trading system had coupons that a client could acquire once they bought a lot of artifacts from him.
If the case is that they lost something in exchange, then Cail felt that his new idea wasn’t too hard to fulfill.
"Like moths to a flame."
...
After the deal was finalized, Cail left the house together with Veyr.
Veyr had been very quiet and obedient a while ago. Now, he was like a little caterpillar wriggling inside Cail’s embrace.
"You’re the Dealer?!" the child asked again and again, to the point that Cail concluded something felt off about that title.
"Why is that a big deal?!" Cail felt annoyed. Did he get another title aside from academy instructor?
Yes, he did. Veyr’s answer verified his guess. "The Dealer is a very powerful war bell. Well, that’s what people call him, aside from being the Dealer. Basically, his existence signifies that the era is ending and another war between the Gods will happen."
"That’s a very big correlation." Cail felt heavy hearing the consequence of the Dealer’s existence.
But after hearing what Veyr said, Cail did have some suspicions. Was he probably the next Dealer or the inheritor? He remembered the old parchment scroll and thought, "Could this Dealer title be passed around? Like when the end is nearing, a new Dealer will emerge? I remember that the person who wrote that parchment was a bit insane."
"Could it be some kind of criteria?" Cail shook his head. "I feel like the mystery isn’t solved yet."
His dreams... what were they all about? Although he had a guess, he lacked sufficient evidence.
"Ugh, whatever. Let’s focus on our adventure now."
"Veyr, don’t touch that." Cail glanced at Veyr from the side of his eyes and warned him for the fifth time today.
Veyr tossed the glowing object he was holding. He wasn’t just about to touch it... he was about to eat it. He blamed Cail for it. "It can’t be eaten? Why did I see you eat that lady’s payment?!"
So this is what they meant by acting good when children are around, is it because they can copy your behavior?
Cail ignored that and squatted down. He pulled Veyr and asked, "What do you think of that deal?"
Veyr looked at him. "I feel like you got ripped off." It looked like, despite being a bit unhinged, this kid’s perception was still the same as the masses. Well, that’s about to change.
Cail looked at him kindly. "So, since you think I got ripped off, what should I do?"
Although Veyr was smart, he was still a child and didn’t know how heavy the title of the Dealer was. While Inshi knew that the deal was a steal, she was ready for the consequences. The lambs weren’t infamous because they were the Dealer’s clients, but because they heeded everything the Dealer said.
Veyr was a bit blank in this aspect, but Cail was an expert.
"Of course, take advantage of it. Eat them to the bone. Your payment wasn’t sufficient for the product that you bought? Why don’t you pay it with something else?"
"A favor. I’ll let them do the bidding of something that I don’t want to get my hands dirty with."
It was unknown if Cail was really the Dealer, but he had the right mentality for the job.
