Chapter 109: Chapter 110: Mom, You Think I’m A Monster?
Her voice quaked with fear."I dreamed that I committed suicide and left you alone at our apartment. I dreamed of seeing you starve to death."
Cail held his breath. Fuck, that sounds familiar. He hasn’t even investigated it yet, but now the clues are starting to toss themselves at him. I guess lady luck is finally smiling at his unfortunate fate.
"I’m alive. Dreams are not real," Cail said casually. He doesn’t believe it, but it doesn’t matter. Comforting her is enough."You’re in your 40s, Miss Xeren. Why are you still that stupid?"
"But it keeps bugging me for many years. You can’t just disregard it like that." His mother sounded wronged.
So let’s pretend that he was comforting that crazy Zishi."Okay, let’s say that it was really relevant. But what does me dying have to do with wanting to be together with that man? I think you are just making excuses."That was something Cail couldn’t understand.
"That’s what you don’t understand!" his mother screamed."You are always like that! You are always calm! The moment you got healed from the hospital, you got back to ’normal’ as if nothing happened. You live your life without emotional fluctuation—like a monster!"
This time, Cail looked at her. It wasn’t the look that he usually had. Because when looking at his mother, his gaze usually held tolerance and respect. But this time, he was looking at her as if she were just any other person he met on the road.
"Then what do you want?" He stood up from the couch."Because you think I’m a monster, you don’t consider me as your family? So you just want your husband? You know what? Why am I even here?"If that’s really the case, then he should just leave.
When Cail was about to walk away, she grabbed his wrist and pulled him back."Don’t you dare walk away!"
Again with this fickleness.
Cail was exhausted. He looked at her."Now what?! You know, even if I’m a monster, even if that dream is real, then what’s my sin?!"
"I understand what you meant. You feel like that gentle and sweet child of yours already died. Just like in the dream. Now he was replaced by a monster? What’s our sin? The original Cail’s sin was probably being your son, and me? The so-called ’monster’—my sin is probably that I chose to become your son."
Cail said what he had been holding deep down."You are a horrible mother."
"I know!" his mother snapped. She was no longer holding back all her grievances, and for the first time, she owned her mistakes.
"I know, and I’m terrified. I know that if that dream was real, I killed my son."
She looked at Cail, with tears streaming down her face, and grabbed his collar.
"I’m a terrible mother—so terrible that even if a monster had possessed my son, I would still try to delude myself that it is my son to avoid reality."
"If you are a monster who is possessing my child’s body, then I am not your mother. But I treat you like my son..."
She then hugged Cail tightly."I’m afraid you’ll leave me. I try to distance myself. I feel like I’m grieving for someone who wasn’t dead yet. I don’t want to be alone! I no longer want to be alone. I am so scared to be alone."
"Everything went into shambles the moment he left, so I was hoping that when he came back, everything would be fixed."She finally calmed down after letting all her emotions out."I know I sound insane, but that’s what I’ve been feeling the entire time."
Cail was silent. That was an unexpected revelation. But for some reason, he felt relieved when he heard that. He heard something that he wanted to hear.
If it wasn’t, he didn’t know what would have happened next.
He was sure that he wouldn’t harm her, but he had a feeling that the moment she rejected him, the anchor that was holding him to humanity would break.
For the first time, he realized that his main core was Cail, Miss Xeren’s son.
Hugging his mother back, he gently patted her."Mom, I’m your son."Cail had no idea what would happen in the future. But as for now, he had the memories of Cail since he was young. He felt the betrayal, pain, and envy that Cail had.
He is Cail—her son.
After saying all of that, something inside his mother seemed to calm. The two of them sat back and Cail offered her a tissue.
"Don’t overthink too much. You’re just very shaken after father left us." He smiled. For the first time, it wasn’t a cold or sarcastic one.
"Look, I’m alive. I won’t leave you. Not until you say that you don’t want me anymore."
With puffy, sore eyes, his mother blew her nose on the tissue."Do... I sound insane saying that?"
"A bit," Cail said.
His mother didn’t want to go back to her room, so they just stayed in the living room.
She found a small pillow from the couch and laid down on it.Her feet were on Cail’s lap, and Cail was playing a game.
The sound effects from Cail’s game made her feel drowsy. After a few moments, she closed her eyes and fell into a peaceful sleep.
A few moments later, Cail put down his phone and looked at her.If she wasn’t his mother, he could poke a lot of holes in her logic.
It wasn’t her lover’s fault that everything went into a mess—it was her fault.
It was her decision. She was a full grown adult.
But since she doesn’t want to face the consequences of her actions, then let it be.
Cail is not a good person. Once he values someone, he is really tolerant. He can cover for her and let her not face the consequences.
She was his mother...
If he was a monster, then she was this monster’s mother.
No need to overthink. Just let her live in peace.
Cail could afford it.
